Six years ago, I picked Dr. Mc Dermott's name out of a book of providers from my health insurance company, when I moved to Chicago. I am so lucky to have found her! Her office is cozy and calming, without the buzz of a reception desk. Cady, Dr. Lindner's therapy dog frequents the office, she is the sweetest. The one-on-one attention is wonderful and unmatched. From the time I sit down in her office I feel like she is engaged in everything I say and really hears me. She is thoughtful and kind. So the world should know to be warned if you are treated by Dr. Rabeeya Khalid at access community health in Evanston or Roger's Park - be warned not to question or complain or she will personally contact your pharmacy and cancel your MEDS! She may not listen to you, but she will sure tell you that she is an infectious disease specialist repeatedly out of self pride - while she ignores the true serious nature of your heath issue and the reason for your appoint. I felt sexually profiled and harassed during my first appointment with Dr. Rabeeya Khalid who kept questioning me about sexual activity and history when that was not the reason for my visit. I explained that there was sexual abuse in my past and as a result, I had not been active in more than 20 years. She persisted and took blood for STD tests that were a complete waste of time and money. But what she did not do - as a 60 year old male who has never had a colonoscopy she failed to get that done. I was careless giving a home test kit which included instructions. The kit stated to MAIL in the test with a requisition for, but the form was not included. When I went back to the clinic to ask for help, I literally ignored and to this day - that IMPORTANT test was never taken. But Dr. Rabeeya Khalid who profiled a 60+ year old man (who is not sexually active) as being gay, but she made sure to insist on testing for STD which proved her wrong! ABSOLUTE ORGANIZED NETWORK SCAM! Based on my experience with them, I DO NOT agree that access community health care is good for any community! They are a health network seeking to mislead and trap, innocent people blindly and unknowingly into higher fees, when they know these people are most likely desperate for care because they have limited finances. I have had an ongoing health issue making it increasingly more difficult for me to work and I lost my insurance a long time ago, but I have continued to try to work as much as possible and had budgeted and saved before I made a doctors appointment. I reached out to access community health network in my community as a source for affordable healthcare, as a self-pay without insurance, that I could afford... and they deliberately led me into a financial trap. I met with Dr. Khalid at the Howard Street location in Evanston, IL. I was told the visits would be either $30 discounted of full pay $80. First, no one wanted to provide ANY information on how to apply or fully qualify for the discount, so I was prepared to pay their stated full rate if necessary. During the first visit, Dr. Khalid began ordering numerous tests and I was concerned about the cost and asked her about the test fees, prior to service - she specifically said to me that they were covered by the initial appointment fee, and "not to worry". I was very impressed at the time and accepted the tests. ORIGINAL POST BELOW: During the follow up visit, Dr. Khalid gave me 4 medical referrals to begin with, and told me of at least 2 others that she would want me to see after the first 4 medical referrals, for a total of 6 referrals. I hit a brick wall in my thinking because I knew a $30 fee was not going to cover those referral costs, so after the 2nd visit I pressed to speak to someone who could help me understand what I would be for as far a costs. But no one would answer simple questions about fees. I assumed that I would have to pay the full stated $80 fee for the second visit - and I stated that I would not schedule a 3rd after that. I just received a bill for several hundred dollars for all of the tests that Dr. Khalid misrepresented as being included in the initial 1st appointment visit fee. She clearly lied to me. When I called to complain about the the invoice I received in the mail, I was told over the phone that the $80 was ONLY a "deposit" only and not the total of the visit costs - but remember that I had asked MANY, MANY times for cost information before, during and after my total of 3 visits. Anyone had an opportunity during both visits to tell me the $80 fee was a deposit. I know that word well, and would never have over looked it - which Is why I call this a trap. At no time during the 2 visits, did any one use the word "deposit". I was NOT INFORMED that there was a deposit - until I called to complain about the increased bill. It confuses me that NO ONE, could use the word "deposit" especially Dr. Khalid or numerous receptionists, when I asked them specifically about the additional costs. I needed health care, and I honestly believe the access community health network at 1723 Howard Street, Evanston Illinois - USED ME for their to their financial advantage only - and for this, I do not feel that anyone can trust them!

We had both come in for asthma issues, but Dr. Betman immediately recognized that my coworker wasn't experiencing asthma complications at all -- she was actually having a heart attack. My coworker didn't believe it, but Dr. Betman guided her to the ER, where they confirmed it was a heart attack. My coworker told me this story, and we both agree: Dr. Betman is the kind of life-changing doctor you want in your corner for life. A few other things I appreciate: she takes many insurance plans, is a women's health expert, teaches at Northwestern University, and refers out to excellent specialists (who also work with a wide range of insurance). Unlike most doctors, she takes the time to answer every question and treats every concern seriously. Over the years she genuinely gets to know you and cares about you -- almost like the small-town doctor you'd see in a movie. The busy office staff is perfunctory... they're not going to win awards for being "nice," as other reviewers have mentioned. But if you need treatment for serious medical issues, they are extremely competent -- which, in the end, is what matters most.
