Had we had more time we could have enjoyed sitting at the table and chairs outside enjoying the view of the lake across the street. Definitely would stay here again. Only thing we were surprised about is that they charge extra if you do a late checkout. Plus, you have a few things you need to do before you leave. We had to take all of the trash out. Checkout time is 10 am, but it was midweek and there was literally no one else in the whole resort except one couple in one of the campsites, so we weren't stressing about being a little late getting out of our Rainbow Trout Cabin. We had put our dishes in the dishwasher and taken the trash to the dumpster, and I was zipping up my last suitcase, preparing to take it out the open front door and put it in our car, when the owner came walking up with her dog (which looked like a pitbull/boxer cross - it's large and muscular), OFF LEASH (the resort's rules supposedly require all dogs to be on leash). It was a little before 11 am. She intentionally let the dog run into our cabin, with us inside. She followed it in, yelling angrily -- not at the dog, but at US, shouting that "checkout time was 10 am!" etc. etc. The dog was barking at us, and charged at me, cornering me in the bedroom. I put my suitcase between myself and the dog. Eventually she called it away and let us get out of the cabin and to our car. The cabin was very nice, the river is great, it's a gorgeous spot with good fishing and swimming and a nice playground. But beware of the owner! Also maybe don't bring your dog, since she let hers run around loose. And the tap water smelled like sulfur, not sure what's going on with that.

There are also Adirondack chairs along the river to hang out. The bathhouse was clean. There was a playground where kids were playing, badminton, horseshoes, and other games provided. Plenty of nice trees provide shading with plenty of grass instead of dirt or muddy areas. They have a covered social area on the creek with nice big fireplace. This seems to be a gathering spot at night. Several rocking chairs to pull in front of the fireplace and relax. The area itself is very convenient to a lot of NC Mountain landmarks. The Blue Ridge Parkway is approx. 1.5 miles away, Linville Falls is a 10-12 minute drive, Linville Caverns is a 20 minute drive, Grandfather Mountain approx. 20 minutes, and Tweetsie Railroad is about 35 minutes. Bottom line is this is a very nice family campground, friendly staff, and great location. We have now visited twice and will be back.

The laundry facilities are good. Didn't use the shower facilities at all so couldn't review those. We have a 39' 5th wheel and had no trouble backing into space 11. The site we have isn't as level as we would have liked but we are making it work. The office, on first glance, isn't very welcoming but the owner is very nice and accommodating. Don't be intimidated by Adeline, the bull mastiff, who is often at the door. She is a big lover dog. The wi-fi is excellent and allows us to stream what we need. (There is no cable and antenna TV gives us 3 channels) We use a JetPak for personal needs. Our Sprint cell service is decent in park, as well. There is a large solar array across the street which tells me this is a pretty sunny spot, which we find to be true. Which is good since we are wintering here this year. We arrived Nov 1 and this was a pretty area in the Fall. We like it here very much and will come back again when we visit our daughter.

This campground is not Big Rig Friendly. After the terrible experience of trying to get into the muddy campsite, we got stuck in the mud trying leave this poor excuse for a campground. We had to call a tow truck to pull us out. Once on the asphalt road, a big rig has to do a three point turn to make a left on 421 from Vanderpool Rd. There needs to be a stop to these terrible campground conditions. The owner has no idea how to properly run a reputable campground and lies to your face about it being big rig friendly. We've been bless to have camped in all 49 continental States and we've never encountered such a dump.

Do you like waking up, heading down to the hotel breakfast area, and then being bombarded with the…read moreday's news and commentary on the big flat sceen positioned at the end of the room so it is inescapable? Do you prefer to walk on the hotel's treadmill rather than risk the outdoors? Are you the type that expects to grab all the little boxes of (children's size) Frosted Flakes on your way out for road snacks? If these are your expectations then this isn't your kind of hotel place to stay. Here's why: #1. Spruce Pine is not Blowing Rock, Boone, or Asheville. It's not a "destination" spot for 84.7% of the traveling public. #2. If you're going, then you're probably going for the reasons we did, to find a nice place to stay during the night while we hiked around during the daylight hours. At the end of the day, we wanted some pretty Okay places to eat and when morning came we wanted some relaxing places to slurp coffee. #3. If you stay at this hotel as we did, then you are prepared to stroll over the foot bridge that takes you into their little downtown. For those of you who are taxing-paying North Carolinians, you will enjoy knowing that the area's community college has a big hand revitalizing the former school and hockey rink and turning them into the hotel and community sports/activity center. The overall (good, win-win) effect should be to help bring in outside tourist dollars while providing community members and their families with a nice indoor complex. We found our room clean and pleasant. The price was fair and met our budget. The staff people were helpful. The patio decks and landscaping are incomplete but enough work has been done to suggest how pretty it will be when it all comes together. Finally, although we're not into trout fishing, it seems pretty obvious that enthusiasts coming from outside the area will appreciate the super easy access to the Toe and the proximity to the hotel.

What a beautiful room with a private patio, lovely decor, a fireplace in the room AND a fireplace in the bathroom that featured both a walk-in shower and a Japanese style soaking tub. The breakfast is delicious with an excellent coffee selection, and the restaurant is phenomenal (I wrote a separate review for the restaurant). We will be back. **Edit because I forgot to include the best part: the staff. They went above and beyond in making our stay comfortable and memorable. We had a small issue during our stay but they did everything possible to fix the issue. They took ownership of a problem that wasn't even their fault, and they made it right.**
