Applebee's... who knew this was the place to be at night? Plenty of people here after 8pm--I guess that's cause its one of the few things open in the southern part of Newark. See, the problem with this Applebee's is: they're open until 12 AM and run out of to-go containers by around 9 PM. But that's not where the catastrophe of this place ends, folks! Service is rather lackluster and staff apparently does not know about the ingredients of the menu they serve. My friend who is allergic to any dairy product whatsoever must have emphasized to the waiter at least 10 times to make sure the specific dish he ordered had NO dairy product in it. At all. Like zip, zero, zilch, NADA. You would think after all that emphasis on the "NO DAIRY AT ALL WHATSOEVER IN MY FOOD" that the waiter would understand and give him a dish that, in fact, did not contain any dairy whatsoever. Right? That's okay, we thought they would have gotten the point too. Alas, the dish arrived, and had a surplus of a yellow liquid substance that appeared to be...wait for it.. CHEESE! So, we asked the waiter if that liquid substance had any trace of cheese or dairy in it.. the waiter replied "no, of course not". But we were not ensured of that. Then we asked him to be completely sure by taking it back to his manager or the chef or whoever cooks the damn dish to confirm that there was no dairy in it. He took it back, had the Iron Chef examine it, and lo and behold, it indeed contained traces of Alfredo sauce. The waiter said there was NO dairy in it, just Alfredo sauce. Alfredo Sauce. ALFREDO SAUCE? I'm sorry, but the last time I checked, Alfredo sauce is a sauce more often than not which is thickened with cheese. CHEESE = DAIRY.. So, the waiter basically had no idea there was cheese in the ALFREDO sauce and almost served it to my friend who could have had a deadly reaction from it. Not just that, but the Iron Chef he consulted about it pretty much had no clue either. BRAVO! And as if that wasn't fiasco enough for this Applebee's in Newark, I needed a to-go container because I wasn't able to finish my food. And then the devastating news came: they were OUT..like, completely, utterly, and hopelessly OUT of to-go containers. I'm sorry, I have not heard, in my whole life, that a famous food chain such as Applebee's has run out of to-go containers. I was obviously not going to resort to stuffing myself down with the remainders of my dish, nor was I willing to let it go because of the moola I would have to pay them regardless. I requested the waiter to at least find something for me to put my food in because I was sure that they would have SOME kind of container. He told me he "asked the manager, asked the chefs, and everyone but there was NOTHING"...He asked everyone, and seemed like he was about to ask the cops and Obama too, but couldn't come up with a to-go container. Ok, no problemo. I then told them it's either that or I take the bowl the dish came in. Simple as that. And the waiters seemed utterly helpless at the concept because they very well knew ridiculousness of the situation as well as I did. They eventually managed to pull up plastic lids for me to put my food in, perhaps in fear of losing their lovely pasta bowl to me. SO, this has been a VERY long story, but I just needed to vent my dissatisfaction with this Newark Applebees. I go to school here and therefore had no choice but to come to this Applebees. What an experience... ordered the THREE CHEESE pasta and it came back as bland as can ever be. More like half cheese pasta. Ordered the cheeseburger and it tasted bland as well. What are the cooks doing back there? So we asked our "waiter" to get us more cheese and some honey mustard and here we are sitting, waiting for nearly 30 minutes while he's nowhere to be seen. Absolutely Not!!! With all going on Standards of health and Safety must be on high! Server brought supposed to be a sirloin steak that look like a skirt steak as i stopped her to asked about the definitive difference in the pictured item she flung her hair almost breaking her neck which then called my attention that she had left the kitchen with no hair net on ! Smh i asked for a manager because after being disappointed by the clear downsize in the beef i also had the Concern with the No hairnet ... After a mini debate and a lame excuse of because I requested well done steak is why i received such a disappointing size in beef I visited the concern of the policy for hairnets. The young man stated clearly they do not wear them. And it is NOT A REQUIREMENT! ???? Who else knows this is wrong? If you find hair in your food just sue. I been waiting waiting for 33 minutes on my table for a server. I saw a server take 3 people's order before mine even though I got there before them. This has got to be one of the worse Applebee service I been to. They take 30mins to serve me, my food was suppose to be healthy but it was drenched in oil, and they got my order wrong. I had a burger which I have no complaints about BUT the service was terrible! Disgraceful! We sat at the bar and had to move our seats because a server and the bartender were arguing. She's friendly, always smiling, and willing to go extra mile. She always make sure she sits me with the best. I do have regular waitress(es). Cynthia and Rena (hopefully I spelled it right) such amazing waitresses. Always on point. I didn't even have to ask for refills - I was surprised when she came with another glass. My most recent visit to this Resturant has been a very pleasant experience. My beau and I recently went on a little date night. We were greeted at the door by a wonderful hostess named Joanne who accurately advertised the specials catering specifically to whomever she is greeting at the moment . We arrived during happy hour and our waiter's name was Thomas. We started off with a pitcher of white peach sangria[amazing btw ]being as though it is Wednesday they had a special [ woman's Wednesday ] so the pitcher was only $10. My boyfriend ordered the half off appetizers [chicken tender basket and boneless original wings] & I decided to order the four cheese mac & cheese with the Bourbon chicken strips and bacon. Of course the chicken was great, however the Mac n Cheese was a watery flavorless mess . The bacon even had no flavor. The bourbon chicken was great! The fact that cops are walking around this restaurant as we eat , makes it very uncomfortable I can understand squad cars outside. That's not even the bad part of this review. The waitresses are sitting around talking instead of bringing out food and asking how's the customers service. The bartender must be very heavy handed because my boyfriends lemonade tasted like lemons with no water . The drink I ordered was just pure liquid no liquor or juice there was a flavor as if it had been sitting out for days. Our utensils were dirty. Where do I even begin? The service is horrible each and every time I have been to this establishment. I have complained to management, tweeted corporate and nothing. A server stole my cell phone, there was hair in my food, a waitress had a terrible attitude, it took over 45 minutes for my food to come out -- THESE WERE ALL ON SEPARATE OCCASIONS. Just stay away!!!!! This particular Applebees is equivalent to dining on any one of Newarks street corners. When I walked in and after taking about 15 minutes to be acknowledged, right in front of me a server asks the host, "Why would you even sit them if our computers are down, now they will just have to wait!" Decided to try the 'Carside To Go' pick up at this location in an effort to eat a healthy salad as opposed to all the fried/greasy fare in the area. When I called the restaurant to confirm a specification with my salad, the operator/person who answered the call was not only condescending but downright rude. # 1) the first time i decided to check this applebees out i went with 2 of my girlfriends from school, so since we decided to have a girls day out and get some lunch we stopped here. we went to school not too far from newark so we decided to go to this particular one, so we came in early afternoon, hardly anyone was there, the waiter took our order& the waiter forgot what i ordered to drink, which was a simple lemonade and followed me into the bathroom and said " girl i forgot what you wanted, what was ya drink again" in those exact words. i was shocked and said "lemonade" and washed my hands and went back to my seat, i had no problem with the food, the food was good but her service was horrible! she spoke in ebonics and it kind of disturbed me because this is a restaurant not a day out with your friends. #2) the second time i decided to visit this restaurant it was my birthday and a friend of mines decided to treat me to lunch, it was just us two. the greeters shut the door in our face & not only that but once we got inside there was a host there who didn't even acknowledge us!!! and so we went up to her and gave her our name so that we can be seated and she walked away and we sat down waiting for a host or somebody to seat us so that we can at least have a table & there was plenty of empty clean tables ready, but after waiting for 35minutues!! we got up & walked out and just went to another resturant, if there was a lot of people in there maybe i could understand waiting that long, but there was not a lot of people in there and there were a lot of clean tables ready for us to just simply be seated. besides the fact that the waiters are lazy & rude and act like they have no kind of formal training in being a waitress or hostess, i have nothing else to say besides, you might want to consider an appleebees at another location if you live in new jersey! there is one on rt. 22 and another in union which is not too far. sooooooooo if you appreciate good service you might want to go to one of those applebees instead! read more

This location is okay in terms of the food I felt the portions were a bit small but maybe thats a change for all the chains? I mainly have issues with the people. I feel like they are off. My boyfriend and I wanted to go on a little date night so we went to this Applebee's. I was craving my mama Rita drink and he wanted his quesadilla burger. It was a Sunday night so it wasn't that busy , several open tables and and just person waiting in front of us. When we got there the host looked didn't even acknowledge us (he was wearing blue ripped jeans also, unprofessional but no biggie), then another couple came and waited and he acknowledged them but not us. Both of us couples sat down and after ten minutes he looked at us and said "who got here first?" (Even tho my boyfriend and I were there for at least 10 minutes before they got there. Which goes to show how he wasn't paying attention to the customers standing 5 feet away from him ). We finally got seated and weren't acknowledged again for another 10 minutes, we almost left. The waiter was nice but very soft spoken, we couldn't hear him and kept asking him to repeat himself. I ordered my drink and it tasted watered down and not made correctly. Every time he left the table and cane back it took too long. The menus were never taken from our table, and we didn't order our food until after we finished the appetizer. Meanwhile, the people in the table next to us were also complaining amongst themselves In which I heard the girl say "I'm about to go into the kitchen and cook this myself" so we were not the only ones. Also when we went to pay, we were charged for a game in the little computer thing they have on tables but we didn't even touch it (he said he took it off the bill). My boyfriend and I arent ones to complain about this stuff but that's how bad this service was. We both keep saying "never again". Short review: "Carside To-Go" service is terrible here. If you want quick and courteous service, order from somewhere else. Long review: Isn't the point of "Carside To-Go" a convenience so that the customer does not need to leave their car?! This Applebee's clearly doesn't think so. The following experience is only the most recent of a few visits made by my husband and I to this same restaurant for "Carside To-Go": I placed a to-go order by phone two days ago. The whole reason we chose to order from Applebee's was because they offer "Car-side To-Go." My simple order (two burgers with fries and onion rings) was scheduled to be ready at 5:30 p.m. I arrived at the "Carside To-Go" parking spot at 5:30 p.m. I waited there for 15 minutes without anyone even coming outside of the restaurant to check on who I was or what I ordered. I called inside using my cell phone. The phone rang for 3 minutes straight and no one ever picked up. I made a second phone call inside with the same results. Finally, I went inside and stood in the cashier's area to get served. Another customer was also waiting inside for his order. After a few more minutes, he was served and then I was served. My completed order had been sitting on the cashier's counter since at least a few minutes before I came inside, so the food was lukewarm at best. Fries were cold by the time I made the 6 minute drive home. I/we will not be returning anytime soon. read more

Greeted immediately, got a seat within 15 minutes on an extrememly busy night. Appetizer came fairly quickly. Main course was exactly as I ordered, and it tasted very well. Waiter was pretty respectful and was not overbearing. Overall, I had a pretty good experience. Only negative is that IT IS ALWAYS CROWDED for some reason, not sure why, but everytime i have gone here, on different day, it is always crowded. I would give it 3.5 stars if i could. One eve after work I stopped by this Applebees and ordered spare ribs and vegetables to go. The service was ok however, I didn't check my food until I got home. To my surprise the food looked old and dry as if it had been sitting all day. It was also tasteless and the portions were very small. To top it off I was charged $16+ dollars.
