As I had plenty of time to spare for Lunch with my brother (at the nearby 5-8 Club), I wandered over. Know Name Records struck me as a combination of a CD/Vinyl records store, a head shop, t-shirt seller, memorabilia collection, head shop, disk golf dealer, and rummage sale. The later was based on a couple sets of old speakers, a turntable, and other vintage items that were for sale. Plus from this person of 65's perspective, it didn't look like the 2 older guys tending the counter had escaped the 60s. :) I had a great time looking around. I wasn't much interested in the weed-related or vinyl merchandise, and I would never get those speakers on the plane. But, the CDs were interesting and I found a great Vikings/Prince "Purple Reign" (if only for that NFL team) jersey that I just had to take home (see picture). I'm sure to come back the next time I'm anywhere this side of the Crosstown Freeway. Plus I'd fully expect that there would be a whole new inventory to explore. Good prices too.

The books were in great shape and cheaper than other used bookstores I'd visited recently. It's like buying brand new books, but for literally half the price. I'm more than happy to give my money to this store rather than Amazon.

The cashier said she found a copy at the St Paul store but "it's at the buy back counter and it hasn't been shelved yet so I can't request it". I darted out of the store, making haste to SP before it hit the shelf and was bought!! I walked in, where the buy back counter is right inside the door. I excitedly told the fellow of my prior conversation. I was met with "She shouldn't have sent you over, there is a lot of places that it could be!" I didn't tell him "she wasn't stopping me". Feeling a bit defeated I had a seat while he looked for the dvd.... as I began to worry if I would have to change my noon oil change appointment? There he stood in front of me, holding out the dvd for me to take, as he said "here it is". I let him know "you are my hero!". Proceeded to the checkout where I told that cashier "he is my hero". She politely said "I hope you enjoy the movie!" So 10 minutes, $2.16 and two lovely employees later I was out the door. Thank you Half Price Books St Paul!! Day? Made!

They insisted it would be fine for me to take... well.. found these messages in my filtered "unknown senders" today... lovely business guys. Thanks for the horrific insults because of your mistake... and thanks for the lovely curse. Please don't stalk and harass me at 1am because your mad your employee made a mistake. You had no reason to make the accusations and insults you did other than your own fears and insecurities as you're up late at night thinking and obsessing over me. This is not acceptable behavior on so many levels. I can't believe I have to say this to an adult. Every action has a consequence. Had I checked my filtered messages sooner perhaps we could have avoided this childish outburst and I wouldn't have known this side of you. Perhaps you have an amazing business but unfortunately I'll now have to warn people about you. It's not a good business or life practice to make assumptions about people, especially such negative ones, because your assessment could be incredibly incorrect. You don't know who a stranger is and who they might know, better to assume the best and always treat everyone with respect. You're definitely doing a great job of being authentic to the world about who you truly are, perhaps you should spend some of your sleepless nights focusing inwards instead.

My husband saw a book about making soymilk and a graphic introduction to Derrida directly opposite. How many bookstores can give you that kind of experience? It's the kind of store where you will find your college reading list (words of one fellow customer). Or that old cookbook that your Mom used to have. That random book your college friend told you about but you never bothered to pick up. A classic graphic novel that your art class peers recommended. You won't find everything you ever wanted to read, but there's a good chance you will find something that you didn't know you wanted to read. The store is a real community effort. One of the owner's friends happened to be there, and said that the owner had another store-full of books in his house. He had been collecting books over 15-20 years, carefully curating them for just this time. The shelves were made with brackets from a local department store that was closing. The owner's brother made the beautiful book cases on the floor. We found this place by chance looking for something to do Christmas day. In the spirit of the bookstore name, they had Jewish trivia, bagels, and mimosas. Some other people trickled in for the trivia, others did kind of float in and browse the books. We gathered around a small table toward the front and had a blast. The store was closing up soon after our trivia game ended, so I'll be back at some other time when it's warmer. A great addition to the neighborhood!
