Drinking wine while walking through the vineyards

We have done a lot of wine tours before, but we have never had such an intimate experience with wine makers and growers, this tour with Paul was truly incredible! We visited two beautiful wineries and got to see the grapes growing in the vineyard, being juiced, fermented, and barreled, we learned so much and made some new friends! Highly recommend to anyone visiting Ojai.

Paul is YOUR MAN! He wowed us with his wine knowledge, kindness and Hospitality. From the second he picked us up in Buellton, to the bitter end of our tour. Most accommodating, especially with his provided meals on REAL dish settings. He was patient, engaging and very comfortable to Be with. Like an old friend. I highly encourage anyone and everyone to experience this private wine tour with Paul. Everything is handled. No driving to worry about, no meals to plan, no busy, crowded noisy tasting rooms to battle. RUN, DON'T walk! Book NOW! Thank you Paul for helping us make more great family memories. ~ CHEERS

I was blown away by the incredible experience Paul provided for our group of eight. We were taken to three different wineries and had a great time tasting, touring the beautiful vineyards with owners and wine makers while also learning the history behind it all. Oh, and our private lunch. What a treat!! Paul was so kind, informative and very organized. No detail went unnoticed, from beginning to end. He clearly loves what he does and is GREAT at it. Thank you for taking care of us, Paul!

    Beautiful Winery!

We recently visited Ojai on a girls' weekend to celebrate a friend's upcoming wedding. We had the honor of spending an entire day with Paul of Appellation Wine Tours. Paul took us to 3 amazing wineries; each one better than the other. His knowledge of the area and the wines was amazing. He hand-picked the wine connoisseurs; which made our experience absolutely perfect. He prepared us a beautiful charcuterie platter as well as a delicious lunch. He took us to our dinner and patiently waited outside until we were done to drive us back to Ojai. Paul and the entire experience was a perfect 10. Thanks Paul!!!

We had the best wine tour through the Santa Ynez Valley with Paul. He went above and beyond to customize the tour to our preferences and even sent us helpful tips on where to eat and stay in Santa Barbara. Each winery he selected had incredible hospitality. We learned so much and got to try many excellent wines. He was so knowledgeable and able to answer of all our questions. The lunch he served was delicious as well and customized to fit with our dietary restrictions. We were celebrating our honeymoon on this trip and it was our favorite part of our vacation. I cannot recommend Paul and the Appalachian Wine Tours enough!!

We had a big group of 14 out to celebrate a milestone birthday. Paul took the groups' wine preferences into account when planning our tour and curated a great day including lunch at one of our stops. We tasted some great wine and found another reason to love this area.

You also should refrain from touching people's plates and cups as you discuss and show them the food items. I understand it's a food tour, but especially when you don't have clean hands, it's highly unsanitary! It's also a good idea to not greet dogs and let them lick all over you ... your hands.... your arms AND your face while you're interacting with people who are eating food, bringing them food from the restaurant & leading a tour. It's a good idea to give people space after you give them the information about the tour and the food and the art and let them socialize with the people that they came with. We should not have experience the person who is giving the tour or learning how to give a tourist next to you constantly asking you questions about what you're eating, what you're trying, where you're from or other questions that are really irrelevant .. it is pretty annoying & doesn't allow you to enjoy the experience fully. It's not a good idea to take shortcuts, because it's easier for you as the tour guide. One of our group members ate meat. The other 2 are vegetarians, but to keep it simple or make it easier. She was repeatedly offered vegetarian options and not given the opportunity to try the meat options along the tour. This was frustrating as you were very clear when setting up the tour, what the food restrictions were, we reminded them again when we got to the beginning of the tour and also reminded along the tour. How often will we need to say it in order to get the full experience. Although the tour guide and her trainee were very nice & social, it is not likely not an experience we'll do again.

Hannah was very friendly and accommodating to our requests. There was plenty of food to eat and a couple of adult beverages included. The highlight was Kim Jensen, owner of the Ingeborg's Danish Chocolates, giving us a wonderful tour of his factory and sharing lots of chocolate treats!

In a handful of hours she shared her years of cooking experience in such a cordial, pleasant manner that even a kitchen novice could be comfortable. The more experienced in the kitchen gained tips and skills. (I can now confidently make a Beurre Blanc sauce, one of the French Master Sauces, to which we added a few strands of saffron and a generous dash of cayenne.). Beyond the food---a soft and tender halibut with the aforementioned Beurre Blanc, a fricassee of vegetables, a fresh garden salad with homemade ricotta sprinkled on it, and a blood orange upside-down cake----we dined on the presence and persona of Chef Laurence herself. Not only is she a chef extraordinaire but she is a wonderful person who shares her life as easily as she shares her home. When you sign up for her session, you get a four-course meal that consists of great food, culinary knowledge, exceptional hospitality, and an experience with a pleasant beautiful person who reminds you of the pleasures life has to offer.

We started with a trip to the farmer's market, where Laurence pointed out different items and talked through the differences in different types of food (green garlic was new to me!). We later met at her home, and the cooking began. She did a good job of rotating the tasks throughout the group, and explaining the techniques as she went. We got to taste as we went, and after all the chopping was done, wine was served. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the other participants were friendly and engaged, making it a fun, social experience as well. And, of course, the best part was sitting down at the end to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Let's face it - there are a LOT of wine options in the area ranging from some of the best the world…read morehas to offer (LITERALLY) to just plain bad. Tyler X Lieu Dit is neither of those things. Before we get to the wine itself, let's go over something good, and something not so good... The good: The ambiance. It's nice and relaxing in here. The bad: They charge $35 for a tasting, and give the teeniest-tiniest tasting I've ever experienced. Stingy AF. The pourer seemed really nice too... I was so surprised with the pour sizes. And (not to toot my own horn) I'm not a wine novice. We've done a LOT of tasting - and I've never come across such stingy pours. They even knew that my wife and I got one of each of their tastings so we could share and try all the wines... and just no love on the pour side. So $70 for a pair of really weak tasting. Now the wine itself... Meh... The 2019 Lieu Dit Chenin Blanc was just bad... there were three stand-outs and the rest weren't bad, but also nothing to write home about. The three stands outs were the Tyler Chardonnay which came far from knocking our socks off, but was good stuff. And the two killer bottles were the Tyler Pinot Noir, Nentrock Vineyard (not the Estate - which was actually pretty good. Again... good quality, but nothing to write home about) and the Tyler Cabernet Sauvignon. Those two bottle were fantastic! The bummer is, they're just not worth the price point. Those two bottles are $85 and $70 respectively. They were great... but not $85 great. Just a bummer the price point didn't match the wine. If they were a $45 bottle, we would have left with both of them I think. We were also kind of bummed because we have been in a big Cab Fran phases lately, and they have two types, and neither were very good. One better than the other... but just not in the same ballpark as the Cab Franc's we've had lately (like at Andrew Murray, Carhartt, Holus Bolus etc.). In closing, if you don't have much time in Santa Barbara, I wouldn't slot this into your itinerary... but if you live in town and want to try something different, definitely check it out. Maybe get a glass of the Netcok Vineyard Pinot or the Cab and enjoy the atmosphere. Again... this isn't BAD wine by any stretch. It's good (mostly)... It's just in a an ultra competitive region and the price point is super high for what it is.
