KidsCentre - Harvest Festival on our rooftop playground

Both children have…read morebeen through the infant and Penguin rooms and our oldest has been through all the rooms and is enrolled in private Kindergarten for the fall so that we can continue working uninterrupted. We LOVE KC. They were always my first choice and my favorite tour. What stood out to me was that the center felt like a place where play and creativity were at the forefront. That impression has played out as accurate. In every room each of my daughters has developed special relationships with one of their teachers. We have adored all of their teachers. We love the field trips and are hoping that our youngest will be able to take advantage of that post-COVID.

We have had a wonderful experience with both children thanks to the caring and skilled teachers and staff. Other things we love about KC: 1) All classes spend a fair amount of time outside every day (unless there's extreme weather) - and our kids love to play on the playground overlooking Elliot Bay and go for walks (on the rope) with their class to watch the ferries, the fire trucks, and all of the waterfront action 2) The toddlers and pre-k go on a field trip every week! Locations include the aquarium, Pike Place Market, the fire station, the library, Volunteer Park, and the water taxi to West Seattle. This is always our older child's favorite day and it's amazing how much it has fostered a sense of independence and curiosity about our community. 3) KidsCentre provides pretty much everything - diapers, wipes, and all meals. Both of our kids have food allergies and KC is accommodating and provides alternative options when needed (which we found was not the case at most other child care centers we toured) 4) The teachers foster a sense of routine so that the children know roughly how the day will flow every day, which has created confidence and a sense of calm with our kids. But most importantly, our kids feel safe, loved, and intellectually stimulated at KidsCentre and we would highly recommend!

The unreported injuries they claimed that no one saw anything yet they claim they have enough teachers to watch every child. after I confronted them last week they put her in an extremely small diaper the next day. My daughter is 37 pounds and a size 6. they put her in a size 2t to 3t pull-ups left a bruise on her left hip and it didn't fully cover her bottom. When I confronted them to figure out why they put my daughter in extremely tight diaper that obviously doesn't fit. They did not communicate with me on what happened. I then terminated her enrollment. The only response I got was "sorry to see her go, we'll miss her." This was a huge disrespect for my child and myself as a mother. Update 10/28/2025: I went back over there to get my daughter's things. They have the nerve to put in the diapers that didn't belong to me that belong to another child. The size 2t diapers they're extremely small on my child. management-Alfonso, had an attitude with me and said "well, I don't know. this is what you gave us." My daughter's Father and I have been buying a size 6. Proceed with caution parents, this daycare doesn't hold any accountability whatsoever!!

Our son is in his second year at Hilltop and everything about the school lives up to its…read morereputation. Hilltop is known for doing training and education related to its Reggio, emergent curriculum (child-led learning), social justice-oriented approach. That in-house professional development means the teachers are well trained, professionally committed to early education, and teacher retention is high. They pay significant attention to each child's emotional, social, and cognitive development. There are only 2 classrooms for 2 year olds, so it can be hard to get a spot at that age, but there are a lot of options (part time, part day, after school, summer camps) for 3+. Bonus: its location on the Nickerson canal means wildlife, boats, bikes, and other opportunities for exploring nature.

Seattle Hebrew Academy Elementary

Capitol Hill

I'm not reviewing the Hebrew Academy as a school, but only the grounds as a place I've loved to…read morewalk through much of my life. The history of the Academy is worth looking into, established by Seattle's oldest continuously existing synogogue. Once it was bustling. Now it's far quieter but still a well-kept historical building of great beauty. On city walks on Capitol Hill, for the decades that I lived on the Hill, I'd often end up on 18th following the street to its very end, where it gutters into a weedy abandoned parking lot for the Academy. Across from the lot is an artificial "mountain" with a niche built into its face, and a smaller niche above that. The main "cave" used to have an ancient-looking stone table, but antisemites smashed it to pieces in the 1980s. Until then I'd take privileged friends there for a dark, beautifully grim and gothic picnic. When the table was in pieces, I still loved to sit in there and meditate. On top of this "hill" was an old game court gone to meadow. The rusticity and feeling of an ancient ruin was so wonderful to me, right in the center of an urban housing neighborhood, a place really to get away. Since leaving Seattle I've had dreams of returning to the niche, of living there like a hermit in some Victorian lord's garden folly. When I look back on my life, amidst whatever might be regarded as important or an achievement or an event I experienced, there'll be to my dying day remembrances of long walks ending in rustic solitude and meditative dreams of glorious extinction. I haven't been back there in the last decade since leaving Seattle. I fear going again, as that street was being quickly "filled in" with more houses and the Academy may well have sold the parking lot and game court and it's all now dug out and replaced with rich peoples' houses. I hope not. But that's the usual fate of things of our dreams.

The show is broadcasted on KIRO radio and streamed on YouTube. You can also listen on a podcast. It is filmed in the industrial kitchen at the Hot Stove Society Cooking School in downtown Seattle. The best part for us is that we learned you can buy tickets to attend a taping of the show and it includes a freshly made breakfast. We immediately signed up and attended the one this past Tuesday. It was so much fun as we were treated to freshly made sticky buns, Shakshuka and Greek yogurt with granola. All of the food was delicious. The show being recorded was also fascinating to watch with lots of behind the scene activity capturing our attention. The guests on the show were informative and entertaining and some door prizes were given away to some audience members. After the taping, we got to take photos and talk with Tom, his staff and the guests. We really enjoyed ourselves and were well taken care of (and well fed!) by the staff. I recommend attending one of these shows for a great behind the scenes look and informative discussions about food and cooking from some local experts.

Tom Douglas and his daughter were great hosts and their guests were engaging as well. We enjoyed the food that was served as well. What bothered me to the point of dropping 2 stars was being offered a mimosa when we were seated, without being told it was not included in the price of our experience. I was not prepared for the steep charge for the drink when we were getting ready to leave at the end. Had I known in advance, I certainly would have politely declined the offer. It just really left a bad taste in my mouth which took away from what was otherwise a great experience.
