    Cafe of Greek Traverna

Mezze until you can't eat anymore! Greek restaurants I found a couple around Bayswater, but this is the best - all my friends agree! I often get visits from abroad and then I get challenged to find a new place to eat: - A place which is an experience - Has good food - Is not over pricey - Fits in a big group of 8-10 - Has atmosphere We were a table of 10 and as the place is quite small, I had to make a reservation. However, always when I pass by, there are bigger dinner parties going on. I remember that night my brothers were starving; they walked around London all day and had to watch their girlfriends shoe shopping. I knew, they needed to eat and a lot! Now when I mention mezze, you might think these are a couple of plates served at the same time on to the table to be shared by everybody. Well my brothers were positive surprised! We ordered 5 meat mezze and 4 seafood mezze and one vegetarian. I remember starting of with the salad, humus, tzatziki, the wine leaves with rice, etc. Please do not eat too much bread, it would be a shame, because what follows is rich flavour of different platters of lamb, beef, chicken, meat balls, scampi's, calamari's, olives, breads, vegetables, couscous. It is a never-ending fest and not knowing being in middle of London this could be paradise. We ended up all paying £30, with wine and water. I would suggest ordering a mezze less then people; it is impossible otherwise to finish it all. Considering the amount we ate and the taste of food, this is what I call quality of life and when I have guest here, I take them there and we do nothing else then eating until midnight. There are other dishes there as well of course, such as the best lamb shank I had and what I find unpretentious is to have a big bucket of salad on the table instead of on a little pate. It makes you feel almost at home! This place is run by Greeks themselves, the mama comes out and makes sure everything is under control and their guests are happy. We finshed the night with an Greek Ouzo!

The man behind this great place!

Simply my favourite Greek restaurant in London with excellent service, food and perfectly kitschy decor.

Honestly, feeling a strong sense to give a one star review. Never thought I would be asked to leave…read morethe table "because the next party has arrived"... and at a Greek establishment? With wine still in our glasses, and coffee still hot?! Sorry, have to give a HUGE thumbs down on service. And offer my disbelief and dissatisfaction at whoever is managing this restaurant and borrowing from Greek culture, whilst missing out on the key component of Greek dining. Either you're a sell out. Or you're an outsider and you're exploiting Greek culture and cuisine. One the website we get: "MAZI, which means 'together' in Greek", but it should be followed with, "... but don't take too long, we will ask you to leave." Having said all of that, and trying not to affect the rest of the review, food was not great. Mushroom Chicken was the best dish (was the priciest line item - second to their service charge - but the only dish that I was impressed with). Tiger Prawn risotto was very bad (both the prawn, and the risotto). Grilled Octopus was average (size, prep and quality of octopus left a lot to be desired). The Calamari Citrus was also less than average. Lot's of the seafood sadly missed the mark - Tuna Crudo was the most satisfactory of all the seafood items. I will say that the cocktails were prepared well. Including a welcome drink. And the juices were fresh - albeit expensive. In fact, everything was overpriced - but it is London, I get it. Still wish the food tasted better. The atmosphere was loud and energetic. The cherry on top was the service charge (highest line item on the bill). Cheers to ownership and management for appropriating Greek culture and putting a heavy London spin on the dining experience. My family would have had some choice words for you, thankfully they were not present to be insulted. Anyone wanting Greek food, I would recommend to look elsewhere. The culture and cuisine has A LOT to offer, unfortunately Mazi disappointed for us.

Came here on a recommendation of a friend who lives in London and we were not at all disappointed…read more We started with some great cocktails and I really enjoyed the Aegean Negroni I opted for; the addition of black pepper simple syrup really added to the complexity of the drink. Every single dish we had was superb, from the jars of tzatziki and tiropita to the crispy calamari and seabass tartare to start. The fresh bread, which was lightly charred, really paired well with the tzatziki and tiropita which were lightly whipped and so flavorful. The seabass came with a cucumber and jalapeno broth which had just the right amount of spice to elevate the fish. For main we split the lamb and grilled octopus which were both perfectly prepared. The lamb, which appeared to be sous vide, was cooked to an exquisite medium rare and the octopus had a great char both was still tender. The service and setting were both great and we highly recommend this establishment.

When you walk in it's overwhelming because everything looks so good. I was only ordering for myself, and it was a cluster deciding what to get. I went with an almond croissant and then also a blueberry muffin for later. It's the kind of thing where you want to order one of everything. Trust me. The almond croissant was very good. I really enjoyed it. I won't say it was the best I've ever had, but it was definitely up there. I usually do a standard butter croissant and I didn't because I was so overwhelmed with how good everything looked and wanting to try something more. In hindsight, I probably should have tried the butter croissant because I bet it would have been amazing. A friend tried some small cookies and I was able to sample those. They were also great. The blueberry muffin was also very tasty although it probably would have been better if I didn't wait 12 hours to eat it! Overall, you should come here and order a bunch of stuff. There's really no other way around it. I do feel that a place like this should have exceptional coffee as well. I got a flat white and it was only just okay The set up for coming in and ordering and then needing to move outside so you don't feel like you're crowding the register while you wait for your coffee drink is a little bit of a mess. They should have a better flow here or if they're going to have coffee have it off to the side or something. But it's really all about the pastry here and that's the star. The coffee is kind of and after thought anyway. Definitely check Ottolenghi out if you're in the area!

The owner is really, really into his restaurant and excitedly told us all about all the different specials and options. My sister and I got the set menu, the Artemis (meat) menu which was fairly steep at £27.50 per person. Food was good and came in courses. 1. Sauce sampler of hummus, taramosalata, tzatziki and baba ganoush with bread. 2. Meat sampler of a single keftede, spanakopita and loukaniko per person. 3. Horatiki salad. 4. Entree served family style of grilled pork and chicken. 5. Dessert of yogurt with honey, a single baklava, karydopita and kataifi per person. Courses came out fairly slow and they unfortunately forgot about us for our last course. The owner gives great service, but he can't be expected to be on top of every table as it got very busy. The female server with reddish hair (spoke Greek) seemed out of it and not a good help to him. We ended up spending more than 2 hours at the restaurant, and it came down to the owner not having good support from the one waitress around, but the food was very good. Would have preferred it to be a little less expensive, but I'd go back.

Unfortunately the hype didn't live up to the results. The octopus (You'll love it! It's amazing!) was too crispy / oily for me and felt overcooked. The eggplant dip was too acidic for me to have more than a few bites. The cod roe dip was bright pink to my surprise and it was yummy but thick, kind of like an aioli and I couldn't eat much.
