Coming here means your pet needs some specialized care, so it's not a happy occasion, but this is such a pet-focused, relaxing, comfortable clinic to come to. As you can see from the pictures, there's a dog bed there to welcome your dog and everyone from the vet tech to Dr. Block sits on the floor and tolerates getting licked! Many heart-safe treats are provided too. Our vet tech was so friendly and our dog loved her - she was savvy and avoided the dog tongue on her lips though! Our little guy is going through heart failure, and our primary vet recommended we come here to get an echocardiogram and really had effusive praise for how Dr. Block kept her (our vet) in the loop and provided great care. She was definitely right, as this is a first class operation all around. You stay with your pet the whole time, including during the echo. You can see the images on the screen, Dr. Block explains what she's seeing and the implications. And the whole process is very efficient and just takes 5-10 minutes. Then you go back to the comfortable room and the doctor explains what the outlook is, how we'll initially proceed with medications, what to look out for, etc. Couldn't have been any better and the pricing is fair too - on par with the other echos we've received from traveling cardiologists, but in that case, it's a drop off appointment and our dog is there for most of the day waiting his turn. I've been to many veterinarians and also specialists over the decades and by far I will say that this was the most calming and Animal centric location I have ever been to. Not only do they prepare you by sending you a pamphlet to Reed about what to expect and also how they prepare their facility to welcome your Pet. It's very intentional and thought out. When I arrived, it was exactly as I had read... A light scent of lavender, calming colors, a beautiful fish tank and two welcoming, smiles by the ladies behind the desk. I immediately felt at ease. My dog has been having a lot of anxiety due to the fact that he's been at a lot of veterinarians in the last couple of years and had had surgeries. They immediately brought us into a dog room that was set up with a little rug, a medium sized dog bed and a water bowl that was lifted off the ground with water in it. Clean and with the pheromones plugged in to help calm him. I've never seen him get so comfortable so quickly. I put him down on the rug and he jumped on the bed and I sat on the ground next to him and within minutes, one of the ladies from the front desk came in and said the doctor would be in shortly. That is exactly what happened. Rather than having a Tall desk, I was on the ground, and when they came in, they sat on the ground with us. It was so sweet and kind. My dog felt so comfortable. He went to both of them for Love and Peets. It made my heart happy to know that he felt comfortable. They took him back and did what they needed to do. They offered for me to come with them, which I think helped him very much so that he could see me in front of him as they did the job that they needed to do. They offered him a pup cup so that while they were doing their thing, he was distracted by the pup cup and could look at me. They were gentle and kind, and we got the job done as a team. That felt very good. We then went back into the room, he immediately went back onto the bed and felt comfortable again. Again, he's been very stressed out lately at the vet, and this was such a relief. Then when the specialist came in, she didn't just explain the situation with his heart, she brought in a little whiteboard and drew it out for me. I'm a visual person so I really enjoyed that. She not only gave me the diagnosis which was very positive but also offered up something else she thought could be affecting him and we talk through a possible solution. That was very helpful because she wasn't just focused on the One issue, she thought beyond that and offered me an option. I highly recommend Apex. This place is top-notch and although most places break the bank around the Bay Area, they are not cheap, but they did not break my entire bank. They also didn't charge for things unnecessarily like some places. Very straightforward and easy. Check out was a breeze and he left Happy. What a wonderful experience and I can't recommend them more. The two ladies at the front desk, you guys were so welcoming and kind. Thank you for that. Then Dr. Chloe. What a joy and positive person you are. As a veterinarian, I'm extremely selective about who I trust with my own dog, but Dr. Block is a rare exception. After I diagnosed my dog, Pi, with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) at my general practice clinic, I brought him to Dr. Block for a specialist evaluation. She was incredibly thorough and also diagnosed him with high blood pressure, allowing us to start treatment right away. Dr. Block is exceptionally knowledgeable, compassionate, and someone I trust completely. The entire Apex team was also wonderful with Pi--they genuinely treated him like a king. He normally hates going to the vet, but somehow he acted like he was having a spa day! Professionally, I only refer my cardiac patients to Dr. Block because I trust her expertise and the level of care she provides. Personally, I'm incredibly grateful that Pi gets to be her patient. As a grad student I don't have much financial backing but Dr. Block gave me plenty of budget friendly options and we were able to find the perfect treatment for my best friend. He was 18 years old and this issue that was diagnosed was keeping him from being himself. Being on treatment, my best friend was able to live to 19 years acting like a puppy full of energy. Can't recommend Dr. Block and her team more, after my baby Killua got diagnosed with HCM, her team has been life savers (quite literally) in prescribing him meds and adjusting his dosage based on behavioral patterns. The ER said he only had months to live and he's been doing so much better with two. I hate BlueRabbit though as the service Dr.Block's team uses. I certainly did not want to have to go to Apex because that meant that my dog has a problem with his heart but since he does, I am glad Banfield recommended Apex. My 13year old dog has a heart murmur and the vet at Banfield recommended this place. I called and left a message to make an appointment and Candy was very accommodating in finding a time and day that works for me and as soon as possible since I was naturally very concerned. The clinic is on the road, easy to find with plenty of parking. The inside is immaculate with rooms that are open and airy and very calming. They all have a dog bed, chairs and treats in the room. I did not have long to wait, the vet tech came in and checked his vitals asked some questions and took the cutest pictures for his profile. Dr. Block came in next, listened to his heart and then recommended the echo cardiogram. The checkup itself was stressful for everyone, especially my little guy because he had to be held down for the test but Dr. Block tried to make it quick. We then went back to the waiting room where the doctor met us soon after. She drew out a heart and explained what can happen when dogs get old, the various stages of the disease and what we can do to help at each stage with medications etc. Having said that, my dog was in the very initial stage. Dr. Block recommended that we repeat the test every 18 months, what symptoms to watch for in the meantime and what the rate of progression will look like for him. Our review is long overdue. Back in February, we discovered that our 16-year-old Miniature Pinscher, Otis T. Fogerty, was suffering from heart failure. He was diagnosed and given an estimated timeframe of two months to two years. We were referred to Dr. Block, a veterinarian specializing in cardiology. Dr. Block and her staff are amazing! She was very accommodating and saw us immediately. Her testing is both thoughtful and thorough. Given Otis's age, Dr. Block was upfront about treatment expectations, costs, and longevity. The patient room was beautiful and comfortable, equipped with a large dog bed, clean water, and even whipped cream, which Otis thoroughly enjoyed! During the appointment, he received imaging and blood work while we stayed by his side. Afterward, Dr. Block explained the diagnosis and treatment plan clearly on a whiteboard. Within an hour, we left with medications in hand and a follow-up appointment scheduled. It's now May, and Otis is thriving for a 16-year-old! A luxurious 5 star stress-free experience at a time where I was expecting to be at my most stressed... Entering the building with my two pups in tow, I felt like I was at the wrong business: a premium Nespresso and tea bar to my left, an aquarium built into the sleek 25 foot front desk to my right, lavender essential oils filling the air. Was I in the front lobby of a Four Seasons Hotel or a veterinary clinic? I looked up and there it was, a sign indicating that I was indeed in the right place, Apex Veterinary Specialists. I was checked-in by Candi, who assisted me with arranging my dog's cardiology appointment the previous day. I was already familiar with her very kind and understanding presence, which carried over to day of my appointment. She escorted us to a room and advised that a technician would be with us shortly to document Wesley's medical history. My two dog's, now off leash, were roaming the room and seemed to be just as surprised as to how different it was, in a good way, than other veterinary facilities. There were two red mid-century modern-esque chairs in the corners of the room, while a fresh cozy bed for our four-legged children sat in between them. The window lit up everything in that exam room; it was almost biblical-like, as if a higher power was telling us that this is the place we needed to go to have our dog's life saved. The technician came in and warmly greeted myself and my dog. My dog reciprocated that warmth with hugs and kisses. Shortly after, Dr. Block, a board-certified Cardiologist - came in to examine my dog. We were there to have diagnostics performed that needed to be sent to the JASMINE institute in Japan, where my dog will undergo a mitral valve repair. The aforementioned is an extreme undertaking. Dr. Block mentioned that she had already assisted a patient a few months back, and was very familiar with the process, so I was relieved to hear that this isn't foreign to her. We moved over to a tranquil blue lit radiology room where the echocardiogram is performed. Historically, this is the step at other veterinary clinics where owners of patients are not allowed to be present, and are sometimes asked to have the patients sedated. Dr. Block has changed the status quo with allowing the the "parents" to be with their "kids". She's that confident in her team to keep the patients calm, but secure enough during the duration of the echo. I was there to comfort my dog and he sure appreciated it, as did I. As an incentive to the patients to stay as still as possible, Dr. Block's team provides patients with "pup cups" while they're on the table. A pup cup is a tiny cup filled with whip cream that does a very good job of keeping the patients focused on only enjoying their sweet treat. Dr. Block escorted us back to our original room, the dogs were again let free to roam about, and I had more time to discuss the plan going forward. Dr. Block was very patient with me and my dog. She made me feel comfortable, as she demonstrated care throughout the entirety of the appointment. We parted ways, I walked to the front desk to seamlessly check-out, and off we went. Apex Veterinary Specialists was not only a step towards a lifechanging surgery for my dog, but it was an important one that was met with love and admiration by people who have a goal of providing patients and their owners with industry changing care. read more
