Since I was 11 years old, I've always wanted to do a backflip. Now that I'm 40, it seemed like a lost dream. I bought one of these 30 day challenges online I thought would help me achieve a backflip, but it ended up teaching me the wrong stuff. Then someone recommended Apex to help me because they have drop-in classes and one-on-one coaching. Within four months, I finally got results! Here are my takeaways for success: * Come in with a goal. Pick a trick (or several). It motivates you to keep coming and helps you gauge your progress. * Do a monthly membership for at least three months. It gives you access to all their classes, which leads me to the next point.... * Take different classes. They do a LOT more than parkour, and I've yet to take a parkour class. They do aerial, handstand classes, tumbling, trampoline, tricking, and more. Taking other courses rounds out your training and helps your brain put all the pieces together. Most importantly, you get access to different coaches. I started with tricking, then tried a tumbling class with Anthony and everything came together. He's an incredible teacher who's great at demonstrating. But they all have unique teaching styles. Rob gives simple, clear instructions that work up to more complex tricks--with big results; Natatia has a great warmup and is vigilant to avoid injuries; and Bethel can spot mistakes others miss. It's important to find what works for you and every instructor is unique. * Consider private lessons. Ryan is a phenomenal coach, one of the absolute best I've ever met. I made more progress in one hour with him than months on my own. He's the perfect combination of supportive and challenging. HIGHLY recommend talking to him. * ASK QUESTIONS. Some reviews suggest people are unapproachable here. They aren't. They assume you are working on something unless you state otherwise. You'll understand why as soon as you land a trick and stimagine if everyone was interfering with your practice. Sometime you just need to do the work uninterrupted. * Finally, be gentle with yourself and your expectations. This is a lifestyle and progress moves at the pace your fingernails grow. Don't rush what's uncomfortable. It helps if you have other stuff to work on so your mind-body connection can rest. That's where learning happens.... Good luck to you and enjoy. If you like a shared space gym that's packed full of fun things, then this is the place to be! I felt both completely out of my element and right at home as a traveling aerialist. The space is compact and looks like a parkour gym with a little bit of this and a little bit of that tucked away in every corner (even a fairly full-looking weights area in the front of the building outside of the parkour area). The other students looked like they were very comfortable in the space, and the other students in my (Chinese pole) class were very nice, and we played around together after our class, which was awesome! The instructor did a great job moving the class along and bringing everything up/down in difficulty depending on the individual student. I loved trying out this new apparatus in such an encouraging and judgment-free place. I'll be back next time I'm in town. read more

Their registration process stinks; it's like the Hunger Games. "May the odds be ever in your favor." You have to re-register each semester, and they don't send out reminder emails or texts reminding you to register. They don't give preference to existing customers, they just open registration to EVERYONE at the same time; since the classes fill up within 1-2 days of registration opening, your child might wind up without a gymnastics class the following semester. When I commented to a front desk person about having missed registration (which opened Monday morning and I was trying to register my child on Tuesday during their class at the APEX and all the classes except Saturdays were already full), she unapologetically said: "The sign has been up at the front door for a few weeks." They expect parents to notice the small sign up by the front door and if they don't, they are just out of luck. They need to be better at making their existing customers feel valued and communicate better about registration. The classes and teachers were super fun at least and my little gymnast is devastated to not be returning after one semester! read more

2.5 years. A lot has changed and this review needs an update. Currently, they no longer offer crossfit classes, but all the equipment is still there. They do offer Moveabilities (MoaB) WODs during the week. You'll still get your full body workout, but it's definitely more functional/parkour related. They now have a full fledged foam pit with high par. You can practice your flips, twists on one side; flyaways and drops on the high bar; and your Ninja Warrior traversing skills against the high wall. The aerial arts classes are gaining in popularity. They also offer much more open gym hours. Any given day, you'll see young to old kids (I'm a kid) practicing their skills during open gym. Last week I took my very first parkour class at Apex Movement. I was nervous about many things... difficulty, altitude (I'm from the east coast), and if I would be the only girl there. The difficulty was about what I expected. You start with an intense warm-up that really gets your blood flowing and your lungs working. Altitude didn't end up being too much of an issue thankfully. After that we went over some basic movements and techniques including rolling, squats, pull-ups and push-ups. Finally, we ended with a crossfit-style workout for the last 10-minutes. If you weren't sweating already you were after that. I was really pleased with my first parkour experience and Apex. Our instructor was friendly and helpful and I learned a lot. There ended up being three other girls in the class with me, one of them being the instructor. Seems like a great community and space. Would definitely recommend. read more

I went to APEX for the first time yesterday as a "drop in" on one of the Adult Intro to Parkour classes. For $20, this allowed me to experience what the place was all about. The class itself was pretty good, with everyone following an instructor through drills and exercises intended to help us safely transition into more advanced movements, which I assume are taught later in the course. Being able to shed your self-consciousness and unabashedly fumble through the unfamiliar tumbles and quadrupedal movements is a requisite skill. The facility itself is like a playground for adults, and I was intrigued enough that I got an eight-week membership that will allow me to come in for "open gym" any night of the week. I took advantage of this right after class was finished and spent about two hours running around the gym's obstacles and features, jumping, swinging, and climbing. A couple of trampolines and a foam pit add to the fun. If you're the type of person that still likes to unnecessarily run, vault, jump, bounce and generally play around, this is the place for you. Even if you're not planning to be some hardcore parkour artist, and even if you're a complete beginner, you can find creative ways to have fun with all of the obstacles and equipment in this place. read more

I came with a group of coworkers last Thursday. We were planning to take the 7pm Adult Intro to Parkour Class for $25, as listed on Apex's website. When we arrived we learned that the Adult intro Class is actually an eight part class and the night we showed up was class 8/8. We were not allowed to join as we would have been too far behind the other hardcore parkourers. We were disappointed the mobile website was not more clear, but alas a man named Charles saved the day. He said we could wait until 8pm open gym and that he would run us through a few intro moves. We anxiously awaited the clock to strike 8. My friend Amy had been waiting years to train where American Ninja Warriors train. By 8:01 we were learning different jumps, tic tacs, and more. It was SOOO much fun. The gym itself is a giant playground. There was so much playing to do and even more gawking. There is a giant gymnastic mat floor, a foam pit and adjoining trampoline, aerial silks, ropes, and a hoop (you cannot play on these until you take an intro class to aerial), and boxes, and bars, and so much more. We literally had the BEST time. Others in open gym were soo welcoming and came to introduce themselves. We were surprisingly exhausted after 2 hours at open gym and sore in all new places the next day. We are coming back, possibly for the intro to parkour class, definitely for the aerial class and for sure for open gym. I have not looked into pricing for anything other than the drop in rate of $25 or open gym for $15, but after I left my mind was on all things parkour. I am thinking about dropping the yoga membership for Apex! read more

Apex Movement has wonderful youth classes, after enrolling my son his focus drastically improved, he has always been more eager to play outside, and he constantly performs better in sports at his school. All of the instructors: Ryan, Will, and Dudley constantly keep the classes varied and challenging. I am also looking at the Parkour Lite classes for myself. read more

My previous post mentioned not having hand sanitizer and being concerned about illnesses being passed around. This place is very popular and my son was in a class with 20 kids so you can imagine the germs that get spread. Apex sent me an image of a jug of hand sanitizer, so I am happy and will bring my son more. My five year old son really enjoys this place. He is not the most athletic or coordinated kid so we have not put him in sports yet. But these classes allow him to jump around work on getting stronger. At the end of the session his cheeks are red so he is definitely getting a work out. read more

I have been going to APEX Movement for about a year, and I am hooked. The instructors have been great about helping me work through the progressions and I've seen huge improvements in my abilities and confidence. I'm always impressed with how the instructors can meet the various ability levels of everyone within a class so that each person has an achievable challenge. We took a Parkour class there lastnight with instructor Rob and he was fantastic, as was the class. What a great time and a really interesting learning experience. It was a great workout combined with an intense finale in which we had to time ourselves completing a course. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a unique athletic experience and the mental challenge of controlling one's fears. Also, working with the booking manager was so easy, and they're extremely fast at responding. This place is A+! read more
