While searching for an apartment we looked through thousands of ads and spoke with probably close to 50 realtors.  Jerry Leazer from Apartment Experts was one of the very few who stood out. From the beginning Jerry's communication was excellent.  He replied to our inquiry the same day.  He understood my boyfriend's past credit issues which has presented a problem in our apartment hunting journey.   He assured us he would do what he could by speaking and showing the management company a copy of our credit reports prior to paying the application fee.  That's as real as you get with a broker! We loved one of the apartments we looked at and proceeded with the application.  He stood by his word and talked with management about the credit before even paying.  It appeared they would approve us so we put in our application and paid the fee. A few days later, we were approved!  A few weeks later a lease was signed and we moved in within the week.  Thanks to Jerry we have a wonderful new home.  He helped us when no one else could.  He saw us through to having the keys in our hands and has even checked in once or twice since. So my a-hole roommates (a married couple) decided to screw me over this past September (2015) by signing a lease renewal behind my back, lying to the landlord I wasn't interested in renewing my portion of the lease. Since the management company was/is completely incompetent, and it was a market-rate apartment, I discovered I have zero legal protection (thanks, Bloomberg!), I decided to strike out on my own. My god there are some truly crappy apartments out there. Most of the places I looked at were dumps, sh*tholes, and dumps of sh*tholes. And on top of that, there's the dreaded brokers fee. The latest trend/scam is instead of charging a one-month fee is charging 15-20% of the total rent, which translates to 1.5 to 2x the monthly rent. As much as I love to throw $$ away (I mean I live in NYC), even I have standards. As luck would have it, I found a listing on streeteasy.com by Apartment Experts for a studio apartment near Sugar Hill in Harlem that was having an open house that evening. The rent was incredibly reasonable and there was no broker's fee. Although I was skeptical, I used the contact form on the listing asking what information would be needed besides the application. Almost immediately, Jerry Leazer emailed me with the info that I would need to provide. Amazed that he got back to me so quickly, but still skeptical, I gathered my paperwork, scanned it and emailed it to myself at work. That night I looked at the apartment, it was cute, on the top floor, and overlooks Jackie Robinson Park. I decided to apply for the place. I spoke to Jerry and he had me fill out an application there on the spot and I immediately forwarded him my docs via email. He told me that he would review my paperwork that night, and if I looked like a good match for the place he would send me a link the next day to pay for the credit check via paypal. I was shocked by that, as most brokers take the credit check $$ from everyone interested in renting. Sure enough, early the next morning Jerry sent me an email that my paperwork looked great and sent me the link to pay for the credit check. I did it immediately, and that afternoon he sent me an email that everything looked good and he was forwarding my paperwork to the rental office. The next morning I received a congratulations email and was offered the apartment! All of this took place in the span of 2 1/12 days. Jerry continued to be in contact with me to coordinate the lease signing and the move-in date. He contacted me nights and weekends, going above and beyond anything I expected, and always professional, friendly and courteous. I really can't recommend him highly enough! read more
