Next generation of Smellie's in the less competent form of Andrew have taken over now but they are following in his footsteps. To place this company in the Yelp Antiques category is not accurate. Currently the antique selection is far poorer than it used to be and the specialised sales occur less often. The vast majority of the sale is low to average quality general house clearance and electricals. We seldom bother to go now as the goods are nothing like as good as they used to be. When last we attended they said how they hadn't seen us in a while but we had come on a good day. Dear heavens if that was a good day I dread to think what a bad one is like, the piles left dumped at the end of a car boot sale come to mind. The web-site is poorly designed and the online catalogue is very problematic to navigate. Well laid out catalogues available as PDFs to print out are what we expect here in the 21st century. Oh BTW watch what they call "leather" furniture.For most of it the closest it has come to a cow is if it came from a house near a field. Faults, damages and imperfections are not described in the listings of any items in the auction, it is very much buyer beware. Some refreshments are available on the site but I would be generous if I called it basic. There used to be more onsite but I by default avoided the serving area as it was just so vile and greasy. Compared to others at their level of the market I find their buyers premium to be rather steep. It is cheaper than some Glasgow ones but those Glasgow auctions deal in higher quality products so higher premiums are not unexpected. Upon finding bad reviews this company's staff added their own, I reported them and this does not incline me to alter my own. It does however demonstrate the honesty you can expect. Read Andrew's comments, plain English seems to be as foreign to them as accuracy.(This is also obvious when you try to comprehend the catalogue) My family has had dealings with this company going back to the current auctioneers Grandad we know what once it was and we know what it has deteriorated into. Judge for yourself but is any company actually going to openly admit to allowing what is done here? Asking me to remove my review and contact them directly was something I found very shady. I share my experiences to inform others, not to simply remove them if it is made worth my while.

I attended there antique sale today & was told of this site by another bidder & I thought it would only be fair to add my comments regarding this Auction. I have always managed to buy something on a weekly basis at the Monday market of general goods, some good, some bad, the bad are always my mistake as I control my bidding not the Auctioneer. Generally the stuff going through on the Monday is what they say it is "general Household plenishings", albeit, there are antique & collectibles gems there if you look or better still if you know what your looking for. Mr. Smellie Snr. I have a bit of time & respect for, knowing him as the past Auctioneer for many years & always found him to be a perfect gentleman, even now when he drops in or does a bit of work at the antique sale he will find the time to say hello & enquire after you. The current set up suits me fine, lot numbering is more organised & at least you know whats coming up, the viewing is 2 hours Friday & 2 hours Monday, like most auction rooms it is a mixed bag from week to week, one week its like the best chip shop in Hamilton with damages n all, other weeks the stuff is great, but that's auctions for you, if you don't view the gear you wont see the damages, more-so, if buying stuff that is antique has been used & around for years, the Auctioneers can't cover every chip, crack or ding in the place - my advice is get specs if you need em or accept the fact if you miss damage that's your fault....build a bridge & move on with your life. I read the comment that had previously been left & I have to say I was a bit taken a back, L.S. Smellie may not be Bonhams or Christies & no doesn't have a restaurant on site; but I can say with my hand on my heart & in all honesty this is my favourite buying room in Scotland & I buy in many...the staff are OK, just hard working folk trying to do a job, the regulars are mostly the same - with some colourful characters mixed in - which gives the place its own character. Their prices are very reasonable, so maybe this is why - nowhere else in the West End have I found a cheaper deal than their 4 items drycleaned for a tenner - which includes leather and suade items, and either one dress or jacket per batch. Silk is included too - which is great when you can pay huge amounts at other drycleaners to keep your delicate items in shape (oo-er). The staff were pretty intense- to the point that I wondered if the chap who spoke to me was high on more than just life, but he was friendly and accomodating none-the-less, and very forceful in sharing the box of sweets on the counter. I had my 8 items worth of clothes back in three days, and they were perfectly clean and unstained. Although do smell a liiiittle bit like a new car... hence the 4 stars rather than 5.

Where can I start, seriously avoid this guy at all costs, a family member bought a fire place from…read morethis guy my auntie to be exact she is in supported accommodation as she has ms and has had a few slight strokes and is mostly house bound now, any way after having looked around for a new fire place she finally decided to buy one from mr john Kane a dimplex LCD fireplace sold to her for £900 cash and was waiting on delivery just before Xmas last year, luckily enough the electrician that was meant to fit the fire couldn't at the time of delivery after saying for my auntie not to worry that I would fit the new fire for her to make sure it was done in time for Xmas, once seeing the new fire it was obvious it was a second hand ex display model that was sold to her as it was filthy and not even in the correct box so on realising this she asked myself to return the fire for a refund as it wasn't what she had bought, I contacted mr Kane asking for a re fund stating that it was because the firm was not brand new and looked as if it had been fitted before, I was told that I wouldn't get a refund and a new replacement fire would be ordered after stressing that we were not happy and didn't want a new one and just wanted a refund because we didn't trust him after tryin to pull the wool over our eyes with the last one he hung up the phone then minutes later texted myself to say a new one was ordered and could be collected after Xmas holidays when the shop opened back up, so we had no choice but to wait till the shop opened after new year to try sort this out, once the shop finally opened we returned the fire to mr Kane telling him we did not want a new one we just wanted a re fund, he then said the fire had been re moved from the packaging and looked as if it had been fitted our answer was of course it had been but not at the house but had been in his shop to which he denied, looking around the shop I noticed a blank space of the wall with the note on the wall describing the fire place we were returning so it was clearly ex display and had been takin down, this then got mr Kane's back up and got him shall we say a tad annoyed to the fact he then swore under his breath at my partner, so then said he would need to check the fire place to make sure it was working and if it wasn't then that was tough we must have broken it after I stood and watched him plug it in and my partner now try and phone my aunt to tell her what was happening he told me the fire wasn't coming on and wasn't working after what shall we say a few choice verbal words from myself and then just threatening to have to call the police because of the way he was carrying on all of a sudden the fire magically switched on after he checked it and then agreed to give us a refund we were told it wouldn't be the cash balance that was paid to him T the time because he didn't have cash there and wouldn't shut the shop to go get it, but with refusing to leave till this was sorted he then told us it would need to be a bank transfer refund so we contacted my aunt to ask if this was ok, she wasn't very happy to give over bank details after the way she had been treated but felt there was no option but to go ahead and do this, so we agreed with mr Kane this would have to do but my aunt wanted to speak to him on the phone and after my aunt gave him the what for over the phone he transferred the re fund but only after asking if he gave her a discount on the one we were returning would she not just except the fire, I'm not sure but I can only say I wouldn't want the fire after where she told him he could stick it. Anyway after getting her money back which took a few days to show in her account we finally got her the same style fire for half the price so she treated herself to a new iPad too with the money she saved and after popping up and fitting the new fire for her she is happy now and just glad it all finally got sorted. I have to say as a small business owner myself I could never treat any customer this way especial a older disabled person like my aunt or any one to the matter, I can only say I'm truly disgusted the way she was treated and I would urge everyone to stay as far away from this company as you can

I was delighted to find that it was possible to re-furb the marble surround which was in-keeping with the style of our property and in addition to that we could get a stove with a brick recess (real heat) . the guys turned up prompt , got stuck in and produced a fantastic job .
