I needed to dispose of 4 tyres. I called these guys. They were great. Very polite and helpful. They told me the price was £5 per tyre. I found the place straight away and dropped the tyres off. It was all very quick and easy. read more

I don't know how I haven't found this place until now. Hidden away in Bellshill in a massive old…read morewarehouse is the gem of diyers and upcyclers. This little social enterprise is primarily manned by volunteers they supply a great selection of new wood based products from fence posts and decking to Osb and plywood. In addition they are a sort of urban reclamation yard with doors, windows, ceiling tiles even bathroom suits. This is the sort of place you need to visit with and empty car if you are any sort of maker. To top it off there are some amazing wooden and reclaimed furniture and structures. I couldn't name what the do and don't have you just need to go along and dig around. However if you are looking for wood diy supplies this is your place to go. Great prices and an even better ethos.

Need to get rid of some junk? Look no further!…read more This place is way less cool than I think it is but for actual, socially acceptable cool points: You can bring your old electronics, furniture, cardboard, whatever (only if it's no good though! Otherwise maybe free cycle it!). The place itself is basically just a bunch of skips, each with a sign over it saying what can go in. You find the skip that matches your item, throw it in and bam. Job done. Your items have now been responsibly disposed of and the council will take care of the rest! For not quite as socially acceptable cool points: I got to smash a defunct microwave by throwing it into a skip and watching it smash. It made my day. Overall this is a great resource that your council tax pounds pay for. Although there's three such centers in Edinburgh I like this one as it's very accessible on the 35 bus. The 35 basically weaves around the city so in my mind this centre is probably the easiest to get to for most people. So be responsible and dispose of your electronics, mattresses and garden waste in the right place!

His colleagues are just the same and were happy to help by carting armfuls of my recycling to the appropriate bins. I commented the last time that it would be helpful if the Edinburgh City Cleansing Department acknowledged when their staff demonstrated excellent customer service......they didn't do it then, so I hope they are listening and they make the effort to do it this time! Thanks guys. Carol
East Kilbride Recycling Centre
After living in Germany for a year I was seriously put to shame by the fact I did no recycling…read morewhatsoever apart from putting newspapers in the little bag you leave out on bin days. It was even more embarrassing when I didn't know what item should go where, we had four different bins and the one that got me every time was pizza boxes, is that cardboard, or paper? I put it in with the cardboard but I noticed a few days later one of my environmental flatmates had tactfully put it in the paper bin. I guess you learn a new thing every day! I think In the UK the main problem is the fact that it's so difficult to recycle without a car. Nobody is going to go on public transport with bags and bags of crap. There's a tiny recycle section by my local library which is basically just a couple of bottle bank bins, it's just not enough for a whole community. East Kilbride Recycle Centre is great, but you can only get here with a car. As the weather was so beautiful today I was helping my mum with the gardening and we had an old lawnmower to take to the dump. We still had the box for the lawnmower but it was all covered in old slugs. Yuck. This place is huge and it's like Wall-e with all the recycling cubes and different sections to put things. Everything is so organised and there are even staff there to make sure you put your goods in the right section. We found a place to dump our old lawnmower, there were plenty of other discarded lawnmowers there too so he won't get lonely and they'll be able to discuss how outraged they are at being used and abused in favour of a new shiny lawnmower. Sorry guys, needs must. This is a great recycling centre, I just wish they weren't so few and far between, it shouldn't be a huge effort to recycle then more people would actually do it.

I must shamefully admit that I do not join in as often as I should but I would like to more. I think it is just the habit that you need to get into. Why do it you ask, well this place is a marvel among a disposable world. There is a place for everything, and you really do feel good doing it, not only that its quite fun posting all this junk through various boxes. My grandpa does moan so I usually go with him, I think it is more my grans idea. Might I add, there is usually a few things at the gate that the supervisor of the place will pull out for people to take if they fancy them. Some of these have been bikes, TVs, prams. They look pretty good, maybe one day I will just adopt something.

NOTE: if you are recycling difficult to process stuff, or commercial waste, contact the people on the site and they will advise if there is a cost involved Use it, as it is better than being a dumb dumper.
