This review is for the Garden Room, which is attached to the house in which Anya & Frank live, not "Anya's House," which is in a different location but run by the same couple. We had serious bug problems in this room. I gave two stars instead of one because the folks seem nice & they seemed sincere when they said they haven't had such problems before. In reading reviews of other places to stay in the area, maybe Hana is just so bug infested that they are hard to avoid. We had a lot of ants, gnats, & fruit flys, all relatively harmless, but we had some serious biting insects, I suspect fleas. The first night I noticed 6 bites around my ankles & lower legs shortly after getting into the room. I assumed I got bitten while moving our stuff from the car to the room. The second night I got at least 8 bites after we had been back in the room for about 1.5-2 hours, so I knew they occurred in the room. We also noticed a bad smell when we came back the second evening--my wife said it smelled like pet urine. Frank said they never allow pets in the room, but I suspect it could have been their own pets coming in the room while they clean. The smell dissipated after we got the fan going for awhile. Frank did offer a refund if we wanted to go somewhere else for the third night, but we didn't have time at that point to pack & find a new room. He said he would do a thorough vacuum, and I did not get bit the third night.
The room was good size, décor was interesting, location is good, bathroom has a large counter space, beach towels are provided. Room seemed clean but we did find hairs in the bathtub and on one of the towels. Bagels and a great assortment of exotic fruits were provided. The view of the gardens is nice, but you are also looking at the owners' cars and your own.
There is no air conditioning and no ceiling fan so I spent a lot of time adjusting the floor fan to try to blow air on me wherever I was, without a lot of success. I found it very uncomfortable to go without AC. Frank said it isn't needed with the evening breezes, but since all the windows are on the same side of the room there is no cross-ventilation so it was uncomfortably hot except for around 5-8 a.m. Maybe if you are used to humidity it won't bother you so much.
You have to run the water a very long time before you get hot water, and the water never gets really hot--it is ok for showering but not as hot as I'd like for shaving or washing dishes. There is no microwave and the old coffee-maker provided for heating water for tea only really works if you start with hot water and then wait a long time for it to heat up a little more. When we came back after dark on a rainy evening there were no outdoor lights and we had to make our way down the driveway and through a slippery little drainage channel near the garage in the darkness.
Based on reviews of other places, this one still may be better than most but the biting insects and lack of AC were big problems for us. read more
