I really wish I didn't have to write this review. I've spent months trying to work things out directly with Dr. Rega and his team, but after not hearing back, I feel it's only fair to share my experience for others who may be in a similar situation. When I first met Dr. Rega, I felt hopeful. I had already been through a long and painful dental process, and I thought I was finally nearing the finish line. He seemed confident and enthusiastic about helping me with the extractions and implants I needed. Unfortunately, things didn't turn out the way I had hoped. An implant he placed in 2023 looked fine at first, but later scans from two other dentists showed it had been positioned crookedly and too close to another tooth. When I brought this up, he dismissed their findings and reassured me that everything was fine. I wanted to believe him -- but the problems continued. During later visits, additional extractions and implants were placed, and again, the alignment was off. One implant was so close to another tooth that it made future dental work complicated. I've asked for a partial refund, but was told that since the work "functioned," even if it wasn't "textbook ideal," no refund would be given. After two months without any follow-up or accountability, I felt defeated and frustrated. I'm sharing this not out of anger, but in hopes of helping others avoid the same situation. If you're considering major dental work, please advocate for yourself. Ask for clear scans, second opinions, and full explanations before moving forward. I wish I had done so sooner. read more

My mom was referred to Dr Rega because she developed an abscess in her mouth. Since my mom doesn't have any dental insurance, we had to pay out of pocket. The option to pay per visit or at the end of the surgery can give you some flexibility, but still no insurance and paying out of pocket was a pretty expensive ordeal. Anyways, Dr Rega was very polite and friendly towards me and my mom, she reacted very positively towards him (she has dementia). But, he answered a few questions and talked about what was going to happen. The staff was very polite and friendly too, but since my mom uses a wheelchair, I'll admit the way his office is designed and set up, it can give you some slight difficulty getting into the office. read more

In July i was referred to Anthony Rega by my regular dentist (whom I love) I had a lower tooth that needed to be pulled. When I got there, he explained what needed to be done. Pull the tooth, add some powder in the area for the bone graph, and then the second phase was put a pin in the area to secure the permanent tooth. I was then brought to a room where one of the gals went over the pricing with me. I was told the cost would be $4254.30. I needed to pay $1126.88 immediately and then I would owe $834 when the second phase occurred... Fine!!!! I started receiving notices from my insurance that they were getting billed for $5638 and that they were denying parts of the claim. I called his office, and I was told not to worry that they will dispute this for me. The denial notices kept coming. I reached out to the office a few times to go over the bill, and just played phone tag with the manager. Then in November I received a bill stating I owe them an additional $1440.40. I was pissed!!! I called the office immediately and I was told that Gwen knew about my file and she would give me a call back. When she called me back, she was not able to locate the original cost breakdown that was given to me in July...VERY ODD so the conversation went nowhere. I told her that she should've known what the insurance would cover when they did the pre-authorization with my insurance. GET THIS... she told me that they don't do pre-authorization unless I asked them to ?!?!?! so needless to say one tooth cost me $3405.28 out-of-pocket. I would've never signed up for this. read more

They exhibited rudeness and a lack of concern for patient needs. When these issues were raised with Dr. Rega, he referenced the challenges of working with insurance, which has nothing to do with the concerns, and did not address the concerns directly, suggesting a potential oversight in leadership. Maybe "the fish rot from the head". Managing appointments, dealing with insurance matters, and accessing health records proved to be problematic. Although Dr. Rega's services may appear cost-effective, there are concerns regarding the quality of care provided. I am so disappointed with my experience at Dr. Rega's office. I scheduled with them to get my wisdom tooth removed (I only have one), and I chose them because of the fantastic reviews I've read here on yelp. I'm really anxious to have this procedure done and it sounded like they'd be competent and kind. I went in to have my consultation yesterday morning and never even got to speak with Dr. Rega. I gave them my referral form, which said that the tooth that needed to be extracted was #17, the wisdom tooth on my bottom left side. The lady at the front desk thought that it said it was for tooth #7 (which makes no sense, given that I was referred for wisdom tooth surgery) and I confirmed for her that it was tooth #17. Maybe it wasn't written clearly! I don't mind clarifying! That wasn't a big deal. But unfortunately it only got worse from there. As they took a look at my X-rays that were sent over from my dentist, I heard them saying that I didn't have a tooth #17. I could hear them talking about me as if I didn't know what I was talking about. They insisted I only had a #32 wisdom tooth, and that we could continue and operate on my right side, but that the pain I'm experiencing on the left must be something else that a dentist should look at. (I had a dentist look at that side less that a week prior, and they had already confirmed the only issue there was my wisdom tooth. Hence, you know.. the referral that says so?) Immediately I knew something was wrong. I've had two x-rays in the past year, with two different dentists that both confirmed that I only have a #17 wisdom tooth. I asked them if I could have another X-ray taken that day to confirm, and just rule out the possibility that somehow the image they received was mirrored or of someone else (whether that was a mistake on their side or on my dentist's side, I'm not sure) and they flat out refused, and told me to go back to my dentist to get another referral, before they'd operate on my left side. Again, they offered to continue the process for my right side on #32! Which I have confirmed since yesterday with my dentist yet again, doesn't exist! I'm just so frustrated that they refused to do anything to confirm what I was telling them or to resolve the situation, and I think it's a huge red flag that despite me telling them something was wrong, they were willing to continue with an operation on a tooth that doesn't exist. They would cut me open to find out I was right. I've since scheduled with another oral surgeon who has also confirmed with my x-rays that it is tooth #17 on the left side, and that I have no tooth #32. I hope that in the future Dr. Rega's office will listen to their patients and take the time to confirm that the information they are seeing is accurate. I'm glad they showed me their red flags before I went in for the procedure itself, but its so frustrating to have been treated this way. read more

Who knew getting wisdom teeth out could be FUN?! Well, maybe not "fun" in the true sense of the word, but I am beyond impressed with Dr. Rega and his entire staff. I originally got my first two wisdom teeth out at another location and had a HORRIBLE experience, so naturally, I was riddled with anxiety about getting my other two teeth out. But Dr. Rega and his team were kind and caring and sensitive to what I was feeling. I was really nervous about getting my other two teeth out without anesthesia after my first experience (my insurance wouldn't cover it), but Dr. Rega made it as quick and painless as it could be. He told me what was going on every step of the way and continually asked me questions about how I was doing and what I was feeling. There were many tears on my end (and some borderline hyperventilating) from the stress and fear created by the first time I had my wisdom teeth out and every time I started to panic, he would crack a few jokes and make casual conversation until I felt better. He never made me feel rushed or ashamed for crying. I don't know what those first oral surgeons did to my mouth, but I could barely open my mouth for 2-3 DAYS following surgery. But with Dr. Rega, I was talking and eating 4-5 HOURS after surgery and only needed the bare minimum dose of pain medication. I really can't speak highly enough of Dr. Rega and every member of his staff I interacted with. I was extremely nervous before hand since this was my biggest dental work yet. I had all 4 wisdom teeth taking out quickly and carefully. I felt no pain just discomfort which was really shocking since I'm getting my teeth extracted. DR. Rega's staff was extremely helpful and friendly, they couldn't have done a better job. I've had an implant and a wisdom tooth extraction from Dr Rega, both flawless. Implant was under sedation the wisdom tooth extraction using Valium and local anesthetic. Valium wasn't necessary for the extraction and it took only 10 minutes. read more

The front desk and the assistant who went over payment were very professional, and knowledgeable, no problems. Dr. Rega went over the procedure, the removal of two teeth, and made me feel at ease. The only concern I had, he didn't administer a numbing gel before injecting the anesthesia, which made that experience a little painful. Also after removing the teeth he didn't suture the opening, which I've always had with other extractions. So a little concerned that I have an opening where the tooth was. Very In Effective Front desk staff. I came here as a referral for a dental Implant from my General Dentist. So I took a "consulting appointment" to understand the treatment plan from Dr.Rega. I send them all my insurance details and x-rays SEVEN days before by appointment. They had done nothing with it till my appointment date. On my appointment date for consulting : - They opened my file and asked me for additional details to run my insurance. - I was under the assumption that the consultation was free( as they never told me nothing about it prior to the appointment ) and only when after I doubled checked with them: They again ran my insurance , to check if I have anything left and quoted me $1xx.00, as out of pocket for this consultation visit. This was a total surprise for me. Hence I walked away. My Questions to the lady at the front desk: Why you never intimated me about these additional charges that will be incurred before my visit ? I had sent you all the x-rays and referrals from my General Dentist(GD) 7 days before my visit . And you are contacting my GD only on the day of my appointment. Is this how you work ? Why you never told me that I need additional x-rays to be taken before my visit ? Why are you wasting my time ? I have to take off from work for this appointment. read more

I was refered to Dr. Rega by our family dentist as my son needed 4 wisdom teeth pulled. My son had his surgery 2 days ago and I have not been happy with communication from Dr Rega nor his office. My son became violently ill from the pain medication Dr Rega prescribed and I followed the post op instructions and used the after hours "text in" only phone number to ask a question about bleeding and medication response. Never heard from anyone even though this is a special number for post op patients. After 2 hours I called the office number after hours and a message was supposed to have been sent. Again, never heard from anyone. Was up all night with my son who was in pain and treated him with Advil which just took the edge off but was definitely not enough. Yesterday morning I called the office during business hours to see if the pain medication could be replaced with something else that my son could tolerate. I was told Dr Rega was in surgery and that they would get back to me. Again, never heard back from anyone. There were a couple of other things that bothered me about our interaction with Dr Rega and his office: 1.Dr Rega will talk your ear off about himself rather than concentrate on the dental issue at hand. 2.There is no formality of pre surgery instructions. For example, I had no idea that 4 prescription of were called into pharmacy for my son. I never received a call or email instructions. 3. They called me at 4:30pm the Friday before surgery stating I needed to pay more money which was frustrating because I had spoken to the office manager and worked out a payment plan 2 days prior 4. My son said his procedure was painful. He does not feel he was numbed up enough and did get laughing gas but Dr Rega constantly talked to him and he was not able to fully relax and fall asleep. 5. Dr Rega never came to talk to us after the procedure. He saw me and looked straight at me but never said anything. Will not be back and I will definitely share my experience with my primary dentist who refered. read more

This review is long overdue but Dr. Rega and his staff are amazing! I only had one wisdom tooth that came out but I decided to get all four of them extracted, that way I don't have to worry about them later if they were to cause any problems. Plus, I was still on my parent's insurance at that time so I thought so why not? ‍ My first appointment with Dr. Rega was a quick consultation and he explained everything very well, including different anesthesia options and how they would work. I was too scared to be inhaling laughing gas or being put to sleep, so I just opted for simple local anesthesia. As for the actual surgery, it literally only took 10 minutes for him to take out all 4 of my wisdom teeth. The worst part really was the anesthesia shots in your gums, but they felt like weird pinches. If you've ever gotten fillings, it's the same thing. My wisdom teeth removal surgery was performed very well by Dr. Rega and his assistant nurse. They are not why I'm giving this review. Like some other reviews I was sent a bill after the surgery was completed. Going to the office to discuss this, the person in charge of billing accepted the mistake was the office's fault but insisted I pay the bill. She was not friendly and was not even willing to work out a solution when I was in her office. She called back later and we came to an agreement but this whole situation was unnecessary. The biller admitted that there is lack of communication between the staff. The miscommunication between the staff and patient causes the patient to suffer from the mistakes the office makes. read more

First, he told my daughter to wait a year to come back to see him about getting her teeth pulled after her dentist said they were ready to come out. Then, she went back this spring when he said she should definitely get them pulled this summer. We made an appointment for as soon as he was available. Referred by primary dentist to extract one of wisdom teeth on Sept 2019, my 1st visit this office and the communication with staffs good and organized well and surgery service was good. They ask to perform cancer screening that required biopsy before surgery and I asked "does Delta Dental will cover it?" she said it may or may not and I was hesitated to do for a moment but I said YES. and Dr Rega's charge for taking tissue and send it to the Lab. is $329.00. and they are asking to collect this amount in-front and I paid. but later Delta dental said it is not covered and also the Lab they chose is UCSF which is not covered my health insurance, Kaiser, either and billed another $250.00. It ends up total $579.00 for gum screening out of pocket though I have full coverage of Health and the dental plan. If you are asked to do this, be prepare this expense that the Delta dental is not covering for Biopsy, Kaiser HMO is not covering UCSF lab expense. Note: When I called the office to ask the reason they chose UCSF, she said this is only Lab performing this test and no other choice. read more

In a nutshell, we did not have a very good experience with Dr. Rega and his office. We were turned away the morning of our son's scheduled wisdom teeth removal surgery for reasons we still can't explain. The surgery had been scheduled for a couple of weeks and in that time Dr Rega had plenty of time to consult with the referring doctor with any concerns he may have had. Turning away a young teenager who was anxiety-ridden of the procedure literally minutes before the start of the procedure was devastating and upsetting on many levels. We even called the office the same afternoon to get a better explanation and after over a month, still have not received a follow-up phone call. Perhaps it was a blessing the procedure did not happen. Thankfully we received a referral to another office and we are very happy with the results. read more

I was charged for an x-ray and was not informed that my insurance would not cover it! So I dispute the charge and they send me to collections, and is on my credit report! This review is 2 years overdue! I came Dr. Rega to get my wisdom teeth extracted June of 2014. He was recommended to me by my old dentist Dr. Shiao. I had been needing to remove my wisdom teeth for SO LONG but I kept putting it off because I'm scared of needles, sharp tools etc. ha ha and I'm still scared of the dentist to this day. Anywho, long story short. My senior year of college I studied abroad in France and OH MY LORD did my wisdom teeth get infected or what?! The gum area was so swollen and I couldn't even chew food. TMI but that area of my mouth tasted so bad, no mouth wash or toothpaste could mask the infected taste. I had to endure several months of pain because I couldn't get them extracted in France. When I came back to the U.S. I kept telling my mom I seriously needed them out and she wouldn't listen to me ha ha (typical Filipino mom who thinks I'm exaggerating pain or O.A.). I had to wait another year...damn Mama LOL finally when I was going to move out of my parents house in the Bay Area to San Diego I convinced my mom to let me get my wisdom teeth extracted as if it were a luxury ha ha. My first meeting with Dr. Rega I already knew he was a cool guy, he's funny too! He's very professional and explained the whole procedure. Even though I hate going to the dentist or getting injections I was excited to finally get my wisdom teeth out that had been bothering me for years! Dr. Rega set up my prescription for meds before my surgery so that I could pick them up before so that I wouldn't have to worry about them the day of the surgery! How convenient! The day of surgery Dr. Rega told me I could bring my headphones and listen to music while he took out my wisdom teeth. I just had one request that they cover all the tools before I enter the surgery room and that they let me keep my eyes closed during surgery. The whole procedure was SO FAST! It seriously took less than 15 minutes for all 4 wisdom teeth to come out. I listened to only 3 songs on my iphone and I was out! The anesthesia injections weren't even bad! DAMN do they work! I just felt pressure but no pain. I weirdly thought getting my wisdom teeth out was such a fun process that I would actually do it again if I could.. LOL WHY OH WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG?! I never write a review but this time I have to. I had the most wonderful experience at Dr. Rega's clinic. The staff is amazing and Dr. Rega is the person to go to especially when you need with wisdom tooth removed. Dr. Rega met with me and addressed all my fear and concerns. My feelings about this experience are bittersweet. My dear sweet daughter had her four wisdom teeth extracted months ago. The initial consultation went well. Dr. Rega was up front about the procedure and was very friendly. We thought is fantastic that he wasn't arrogant ..refreshing. My daughter and I felt she'd be in great hands for surgery. As a mom, I was put as ease about surgery. I've had some major surgery fears due to past medical professional's incompetence, letdowns and billing issues. My kids mean the world to me and I want nothing but the best for them. The out of pocket expenses were high, yet we thought this office would provide top notch service across the board. Across the board regarding surgery, follow-up and billing issues. Prior to surgery, I was contacted by an employee. who stated she needed my husband's social security number in order to obtain information from our insurance company regarding financial coverage. She said the policy number and other information I had provided was not sufficient to obtain what she needed. I was very upfront about not being comfortable with giving out the SS number, yet she insisted that was the only way she could handle the situation. I did reluctantly tell her the SS#. * More information on this issue below. Surgery went fine. Following surgery, my daughter was highly praised several times over by Dr. Rega for being such a wonderful patient. Dr. Rega told my daughter and I that he would call that evening to see how she was doing regarding surgery. We both thought that was very cool. We left the office feeling as if our faith in the medical profession as a whole was on a path to being restored. We anticipated his call that evening and my daughter asked several times that evening if Dr. Rega had called. I was sad to tell her each time she asked that there had been no call. That truly was a let down for us. The following morning, she asked again if he'd called. When I told her he had not called to check on her, her beautiful eyes welled with tears. Then mine welled with tears...when she is sad, I am sad. Another letdown was in regards to the portion of our payment due for services rendered. We received an invoice for additional fees due. That did not seem correct to me. I immediately reviewed the documented estimate, which stated several separate charges for the anesthesia. We were charged for 60 minutes of anesthesia, yet I remembered surgery was about 45 minutes long. It was charged in 15 minute blocks of time. I called the office and was told this was an oversight and a credit for the additional 15 minute block of anesthesia would be issued and mailed to our home. It took nearly a month to receive the refund. I was not told this the first time I called, yet learned about the wait during a second call to the office. For any patient who visits this office, I highly recommend carefully reviewing the estimate and statement documents and keep track of actual services rendered. * The Social Security issue was still bothering me. I called our dental insurance provider and told the representative about the SS# issue. She told me there are many other options for a dental office to access a patient's account if the policy number does not allow access to the account. She told me a dental office should never require or ask for a SS#; please keep that in mind. The follow up appointment...that was ok and took about a minute. We had hoped Dr. Rega himself would examine my daughter's mouth. Instead, the exam was done by the very nice nurse. I had planned on telling Dr. Rega about our disappointments in person. This began as a five star experience and I am truly sad that we felt let down and stars were lost. Not our loss; we do not recommend this office. We have experienced better. read more

Edit: They agreed to drop the $323 dollar charge that they said would be covered by insurance. +1 star. I had my wisdom teeth removed here. I was told that I had to pay $396 up front and insurance would cover the rest. Just like other have people stated, that wasn't true. The total was $1756. I wasn't even sedated, I just had laughing gas and he pulled them out. No cutting or anything. I received a bill for $323 6 months after the procedure. The is the first bill I have seen from them and it says I'm 'late'. One thing that pisses me off is when someone tells me that everything is covered and then later sends me a bill. Our family has used Dr Rego twice for oral surgery procedures. I agree with the other reviewers. Dr Rega is very approachable and friendly and extremely competent. He put my son at ease and the procedure to remove a few baby teeth went really smoothly and pain free. His hygenists working with him also did a great job! I also had an appointment with him to evaluate whether or not to have my wisdom teeth removed, and he ended up recommending that they not be removed. I appreciated that he did an honest assessment and wasn't looking at just getting the business. That being said, the office staff is unfriendly and impatient with their clients. I have had several interactions with them from the time we checked in to a follow up call regarding a billing issue with my insurance. The claim was submitted incorrectly, and this caused the insurance company to deny the claim. When I called the insurer, they said that I needed to give the information needed to Dr Rega's office so the claim can be resubmitted. When I called, I was abruptly told that I needed to call the insurance company and work it out myself. The front desk receptionist and the biller are not friendly and do not seem to appreciate dealing with people, and this creates a very unwelcoming experience with this office which is really unfortunate because Dr. Rego is amazing. My son needs a second procedure and we asked our orthodontist to refer us to a different oral surgeon based entirely on the negative interaction with the office staff. read more

Reading some of the reviews right before my appointment I was wondering what I would be in for here. In the end, the experience was great. When I go to a medical professional, I like having someone who will tell me things straight and is confident. Dr. Rega was very encouraging and my extraction went by very quickly. I didn't catch the name of the tech who brought me in, but she answered a lot of my questions also and gave honest advice. I also thought my teeth were in bad shape, but Dr. Rega let me know he's seen much worse and that he can tell I'm at least taking steps to take care of things dentally, which is also encouraging. I had a little bit of confusion in regards to my bill- over the phone when I scheduled the appointment I was told I would have a cost of $339 for the extraction since I've maxed out my insurance. Then when I got there they did an x-ray which cost about $100 or so dollars (didn't know they were going to do one since my main dentist had sent some over). Then they said that what comes out of pocket for me will actually be less because of the contracted amount with my insurance. I ended up paying less than I thought I was going to, but the whole thing was still a bit confusing until another gentleman came to the front desk to help explain. Hopefully I won't have to come back to this review to talk about receiving an unexpected bill, as I did explain that I had maxed out my insurance and wanted to pay everything up front. So..if I could give separate reviews- 5 stars for Dr. Rega and the tech, 3.5 stars for feeling confused about the bill- 1 for being blindsided by the x-ray and 2 for just not feeling super clear once I was at the office after thinking I was clear on the amount over the phone. read more
