The original consultation was fine, although the wait times here are ridiculous. Well over an hour past your appointment time. We scheduled the appointment 3 weeks out, and the week after they told us the schedule changed so it would not be a month out. No big deal, annoying, but fine. Cut to the week before - I called to confirm the surgery time. They said they make the schedules on Monday the week of and I could call Monday. Monday comes and they still don't have a final time. They "think" it's 2:00PM but someone will call me the day before. Cue the day before and it's 1:00PM and I still don't have a surgery time. I call the scheduler and she says 2:00 but the nurse make their calls around 3:00 PM so they'll confirm. Finally the nurse calls and the surgery time is 3:50PM... for a toddler! It's annoying enough that Dr. Tao cannot perform surgery until 12PM at this location, but even he said children should be his first surgery of the day. My toddler is probably the last surgery of the day. Everything about this experience has been frustrating and having to do the surgery is anxiety inducing enough. We are considering cancelling it altogether and going to San Diego to another surgeon....

My family and I have been seeing Dr. Chao and his team for many years at both the Irvine and Fullerton locations - they are simply outstanding. In the past, we've done cataract surgery (for my dad), routine checkups, and most recently for myself, PRK surgery. In every instance, we've been absolutely impressed with Dr. Chao's team of professional, knowledgeable, and kind staff members. In 9/2020, I went to get a consultation about Lasik vs. PRK surgery with Dr. Chao. He patiently walked me through the relative advantages of each procedure and which was the right one for me. My PRK procedure (10/2020) was incredibly smooth; some of my friends had less than ideal experiences with other practitioners, but I'm happy to report my procedure and recovery process went perfectly. Dr. Chao and his team did an amazing job of caring for me, carefully explaining what I should expect, and always making me feel like I was being treated with the highest level of expertise. I just came in for my three-month follow-up and could not be happier I decided to work with Dr. Chao. It's rare to find such a wonderful team of medical professionals. I genuinely enjoy coming in to see Dr. Chao! My advice is to listen to the onslaught of five-star reviews (especially those from people who actually work in healthcare) and book an appointment with Dr. Chao's office. I came back for a second treatment for a retinal detachment. Its very important to take care of that issue before i become fully blind with that eye. I have to trust the person who is doing the lasering, and the Doctor here was great. It took about 15 minutes of lasering, and it stung a little everytime they lasered. The scariest part was taking two needle shots right into the eye. I actually cried a little and a few minutes later i was getting two needles right into the eye to numb the eye before lasering. Overall they were very professional, i just came back last week from a check up and everything checked out right. I trusted this place with my only good eye and they did a great job. I will continue to come here for any eye exams, trusted and recommended retina place.
