We feel so fortunate that we were able to buy one of the beautiful homes Tom Anthony, Andy Pitarre and Anthony Associates built on Howe Street in Oakland. There are two single-family houses per lot, and each house has its own private outdoor space. While all ten houses in the development share certain elements, each of the houses has unique features. The attention to detail is astonishing; each of the window and door frames in our house, for example, has been hand crafted. There are similar details throughout our house and the others in the development. It is wonderful to live in a modern home with design elements that are throwbacks to older homes. Because we purchased new construction, there of course have been some issues that have needed attention, but Tom, Andy and their crew have been wonderfully responsive to us. We also appreciate Tom's approach to building not just houses, but neighborhoods and communities. Tom builds the type of urban in-fill development that every city in the Bay Area should seek to encourage. We love that we were able to buy a single-family home in a dense urban neighborhood, and we love that we are part of a growing community on Howe Street. Their agent Hany was a huge headache to work with whenever we needed proper heating in our unit. We informed him that the place was inhabitable and that he was breaking the law by not providing proper heating. Hany and another agent Tom continued to quote some made up law and never actually provided written evidence or reference for these laws. We ended up leaving our apartment because the relationship had soured so much. Also, their office is really disorganized. Whenever I called to make sure my rent payment was received no one knew where my check was to be found. Once, they even CASHED my check and then called me and told me they didn't receive my rent for that month. I told the lady on the phone that I was looking at my bank account right now and it says you cashed it. She put me on hold for 5 minutes and then came back and said oh okay we found it! I bought a house that Tom Anthony had completely renovated back in the spring of 2010. My wife and I were initially planning to stay away from "flipped" houses, because while everything seems shiny and new inside, they are often renovated extremely quickly with the cheapest finishes available. But this house clearly was no quick flip. Sure, Tom probably made a nice profit, but he also clearly poured a lot of money into the renovation, as evidenced by the craftman details he retained (hardwood floors, fireplace mantle, ceiling and doorway mouldings), and the more contemporary finishes he added in the kitchen and bathrooms. About 7 months later, we had some heavy rains, and I noticed some bubbling in the paint in the hall bathroom, as well as dampness. I assumed the roof was leaking, so I decided to call Tom, and he sent someone over to look at it. It turns out the roof wasn't leaking...the paint had just bubbled from shower steam, and it felt damp because of, well, the steam. He fixed the drywall and paint, and that was it. Five YEARS later, this past winter, I noticed some mold in the corner of my garage, coming down the ceiling. The garage is a stand alone structure. I checked the garage roof, and the El Nino rains had left a large pool of standing water. It was clear that the roof was not sloped properly to allow all of the water to get to the gutters. So after weeks of sitting up there, the water eventually found a way to penetrate the roof where the gutter spout came through. I decide to shoot Tom an email about it. He immediately sent a roofer over to patch the leak. After some discussion with his associate Andy Pitarre, he then agreed to repair the roof slope issue, remove the molded drywall, and patch it back up. For free. Almost six years AFTER I bought the house from him. Have you ever heard of a home builder/contractor/property investment company that would do that for you? I sure haven't. Sure, it's possible that the garage roof wasn't sloped properly because of Tom's work, or it's possible that the slope issue was there before Tom renovated the roof (the house was originally built in 1924). Either way, Tom clearly stands by the quality of his work, and went above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied. And for that, Anthony Associates deserves five stars. read more

We just bought the last of the "Oakmont" homes that Anthony Associates built on Howe Street in Oakland. These are ten newly built homes near Piedmont Avenue on the same street as St. Mary's cemetery, the Oakland Mausoleum, and the Chapel of the Chimes. Tom Anthony is committed to this neighborhood. He is building three homes on Montgomery St. behind us, his own house on Howe, and four more near the cemetery gate. The Bay Area needs dozens of Tom Anthonys -- smart developers committed to sustainable practices and vibrant neighborhoods. Tom is not only a smart builder, he is visually creative. He can sketch an idea quickly and account for the vagaries of space, sun, and weather. His dad was an architect, and it shows. Tom has built a strong team: Andrew Pitarre handles the real estate transactions. Diane La Rose manages the crew at Asset Construction, the actual building operation. Several skilled workers, notably Julio, do fantastic precision work. Allison Hatcher oversees interiors. Buying a house is never easy. We looked closely at six of Tom's Oakmont houses and seriously considered buying three of them including the one we purchased. I went through all of the blueprints and walked each house as it was built. I spoke with vendors and with those who had purchased his homes. I watched and interviewed workers. I asked Andy a million questions, often at night and on weekends. We love the house we bought, as do our friends. We knew that the neighborhood was great (and getting better, thanks to Tom and others like him). Tom and Andy made the transaction so smooth that I did not use a realtor, just an attorney. Diane and Julio have handled the inevitable punch list of small fixes not only for us, but for our neighbors as well. When we wanted solar added at the last minute, Andy made it happen. When PGE threatened to delay our move-in date, Diane moved mountains. More impressively, she moved PGE. Allison helped us find the matching knobs, fixtures, etc. needed to customize our place. Is it all perfect? Almost. The building code forced some odd decisions (the house has 58 light switches and a Danish thermostat that laughs at me when I try to program it). Tom markets the houses between the Mausoleum and the cemetery as "Oakmont" when "Death Row" would have been catchier. Tom is so committed to unique architecture that he designed every house to be unique -- meaning ten different kitchens and about 40 bathrooms. My guess is that standardizing a bit more would have reduced complexity and cost. In the end, most of us choose our home based on its location, suitability, and price -- not based on who built it. But if you get a chance to buy a house that Tom built, do it. You won't look back. read more

The entire year of working with Tom Anthony and his crew has been one of the worse experiences of my life. He tried to trick us into building a fence that was on his property, then his crew poured concrete on our car and he wouldn't pay us back until we got a lawyer involved, and every inconvenience was met with an excuse and a lie. This is a man who is out for himself. He lacks integrity and follow through and showed that throughout the entire year. Your hard earned money should go to someone who is decent and has some understanding of community and kindness. Don't waste your time or money on this man or his company. read more

Don't expect any sort of courtesies, or any acts of general goodness or humanity. Every time you call the office will be a hassle. Every time you talk to Tom Anthony he will speak to you in a condescending tone, as he finds other humans to be beneath him. Keep all communications in a format that is admissible in court, as those are the only kinds that he will respond to. Also, he has told my roommate that he is age-ist against young people; my roommate's mother had to threaten with legal action before he would rent to us responsible adults in our twenties. If you can avoid doing business with Anthony Associates, by all means, do. If you must deal with them, protect yourself, and keep your legal council on speed dial. read more

Tom and his construction company, Asset Construction, really know how to do quality work and they stand behind it. As any homeowner knows, there are always things that pop up after you move in that still need to be addressed. Tom put us in contact with his head contractor, Duncan, who was in charge of the renovation work on our house before we bought it. Duncan has helped tremendously in fixing things himself or getting guys out to fix things at no cost to us. Personally, I believe this service is unheard of when purchasing a house.
