When I happened upon the Barnes & Noble at Derby St Shops, I came to realize that I had somehow been mentally convinced that there were no more open locations. So this was a pleasant surprise! What I love most about the Frugal Bookstore is their collection of BIPOC children's books. I love knowing that the books that I buy for my nieces and nephews will feature BIPOC characters and stories. Thanks to these books, they will grow up seeing representation and knowing that diversity and inclusion is normal. Most of the books at the Frugal Bookstore are written by BIPOC authors or feature BIPOC characters and issues. There are also a few small gift items and calendars. The store is pretty small but packs a big punch. It's well-organized, clean and usually overseen by Nia, the owners' daughter. She's really welcoming and friendly. She got me into Sister Souljah's books! I'd want people stopping by to know that the hours are kind of limited. I sometimes kill time at the nearby Dudley Cafe before heading over to the Frugal Bookstore. Also, the front door can stick and requires a good pull/push to open. But soon after my first visit, I realized there was so much more! Not your typical book stores with not your typical books, this collectively run shop is filled with a whole bunch of material (old, new and totally progressive) that would surely fire up some folks of conservative backgrounds. Their meeting space is free to local activist groups for events and gatherings, they benefit greatly from community donations and are a testament to the concepts of empowerment, education and the community's need for discussing and bringing ideas to light.

The exterior signage alone is remarkable! Definitely among my favorite bookstores world-wide. I came away with their The Papercuts Anthology: What Happened Here, a collection of poems, essays, and fiction by authors they hosted during their first year (2014) in business. What a nice souvenir, co-edited by the store's owner, Kate Layte.

Blue Bunny Books is easily one of my favorite locations to walk to and hang out. They really have something for everyone here. My boyfriend, who is more of a tea than a coffee person, hasn't found any complaints when trying their drinks (and he may be as much of a drink critic as I am). If you have kids, Blue Bunny also does creative and fun events to engage and involve your little ones in some much-needed book-themed fun. With our family expecting our first baby, we're beyond thrilled to bring her over to Blue Bunny's events, no matter how old she is. Blue Bunny is such a staple to the Dedham community, and I will always enjoy going back for some yummy coffees and good books.

My nervous little lady left feeling confident and proud of her experience. Lex did the cut and was great. I see another review saying that the LGBTQ books were too in your face. I have a lot opinions on that sentiment, but what I will say is that I didn't think they were "in your face." There was a healthy selection of books reflecting all lived experiences in our society, including immigrants, neurodiverse people, BIPOC, and yes, LGBTQ. I'm glad my daughter will grow up with exposure and respect for everyone. And, for what it's worth, there were also lots of "normal" books about Disney princesses and cars and animals too. I highly recommend Moon Lily.
