We've driven past here before and finally stopped for breakfast. Overall, had a very positive experience. Staff were very friendly, service was excellent, and each of our eggs, hash browns, turkey sausage and bacon were all really good. Overall, a cozy breakfast joint that's a solid choice for breakfast if you're in the area.

My husband and I went to Red Apple Pancake House on a Sunday morning. We met two friends there and had a really nice breakfast. It was busy but not crowded. The servers were very nice and attentive. I liked that ther was a calm and relaxed atmosphere. I ordered the chocolate chip pancakes and my husband ordered the three bread French toast. The pancakes were plain with some chocolate chips sprinkled on top. The three bread French toast gave you the opportunity to try the banana bread, cinnamon swirl bread and crunch French toast on one plate. For a traditional tasting breakfast in a cozy environment, I recommend Red Apple Pancake House.

Just like grandma used to cook!! Place was packed on arrival, waited 5 minutes. Sat near the kitchen so I was able to see everything being served. O man, I wanted everything!!! 2 people ordered enough for 3.5 people. The build your own sandwich did not even have a chance! That was inhaled in 30 seconds (croissant, egg, cheese, sausage patty). The country fried steak came either chicken or beef, went with beef, yum!! Skillet, I look down then looked up, gone! Wait staff was super friendly, from the gentleman that sat us to the waitress that waited on us, all awesome!! Will be re-visiting!!

Then they switch over to Lucky Burgers which is open from 4pm until no one is there and they want to go home. Though technically I think they're open until 8 or 9pm. There are a handful of items on the Lucky Burgers' menu: about 5 variations of their classic burger, a chicken sandwich, chicken tenders, and waffle fries. When we went, the place was empty and never got busy. Which opened the door for one of the owners, Scott, to regale us with tales of days gone by from his childhood in Evanston and the famous people he knew, grew up with, and worked with. It was nice hearing these stories and it was nice to give Scott something and somebodies to talk to as well. The place has a large parking lot and is nice and clean on the inside. There is a tiny area with slot machines and a small bar/counter at the entrance. The burgers are all smashburgers. They come as singles or double patties. Go for the double as there's not a whole lot of meat once they're smashed. The differences are the toppings. Scott recommends their housemade dijonaise sauce which is good, but ask for it on the side. The cook slathers it on the burger and that's all you can taste. Once I scooped (you read that correctly) the sauce off my burger, it was a pretty good burger. The meat is seasoned well and cooked nicely and the bun holds up (despite dripping in dijonaise). We all shared the chicken tenders as an appetizer. Five nice sized tenders come in the meal and you can choose your dipping sauce. Scott recommended their honey mustard which was very good and the ranch wasn't bad either. He is also johnny-on-the-spot to refill fill your drinks. I seriously thought that I would float away. The best part is the price. All said and done for a burger, waffle fries, and a soda, with tax and tip is like $15-$18 bucks. It's a nice place that I need to go back to and visit for the Jelly Cafe side. AND return for their burgers, tenders, and more of Scott's stories.

Chappie's was a random pick for us to go have brunch at while we were in the Palatine area. Chappie's had been on my list of brunch restaurants to check out. When we got to the restaurant it was peak lunch time and the restaurant was almost 3/4 full. We got seated promptly. We took our time to look at their menu and decide as they had a good menu variety. We ordered drinks in the meantime. I got a regular coffee and a Chappieccino (cappuccino w/ Chappie's face, Chappie being their family dog, a Corgie). We ordered a Bacado Omelet w/ a side of pumpkin spice pancakes instead of regular pancakes and hashbrowns, a Huevos Rancheros, and a special of 2 Eggs x 2 Pancakes x 2 Sausage links (instead of bacon). I had the Bacado Omelet which had bacon, avocado, scallions, cheese, and I asked for chopped jalapeños which did not have an up charge. The omelet was good. I liked the way it was cooked. The hash browns were cooked to perfection. They were exactly the way I like them, crispy and soft. They also have me a fried green chili pepper (Chile Toreado) on the side which added a nice spicy taste. The specialty pumpkin spice pancakes with pumpkin puree whipped cream was really delicious. I loved its taste. The Huevos Rancheros was the best dish at the table. It was perfectly cooked with two fried corn tortillas, eggs over easy, fried beans, red salsa, and cheese. It tasted great. I liked it more than my dish. The special of 2 Eggs x 2 Pancakes x 2 sausage links was tasty as well. We had a good experience and would go back. Definitely recommended. Check it out.

More like a normal double cheeseburger in my book. Added a Charred jalapeño - was awesome Onion bun also not the right vehicle for smash burger - top bun was burned and rock hard - so ate it open style with.knife and fork as a soft Potato Bun is what you ideally need for a smash burger. Really disappointing that the chef put out food with a burnt bun when the place is only 10% occupied. Burger was 4/5 but 2/5 as a "smashburger." spicy buffalo chicken wrap - 4/5 Grilled Chicken salad - 4/5 Mac and cheese -4/5 Fries were like the battered type and not crinkle or skinny. 4/5. The place was not busy so we were seated immediately. We got the Filipino menus as well as the traditional. I ordered a side of Garlic Fried Rice and a side of 2 Eggs Over Easy and the Ube Pancakes. The 3 guys each ordered the Tap-Si-Log and Garlic Fried Rice and a couple orders of the Filipino Lumpia. Let's start with the Garlic Fried rice, it was good and had crispy garlic bits in it. It was good but typical. The Ube Pancakes were pretty good. You can taste Ube flavoring and it was large. I liked the Ube Cream drizzle. The lumpia was crispy and a decent size. I was told it was good and the sauce was tasty. My friends said the Tap-Si-Log was just ok. By the look of the meat, it didn't have that caramelized sauce on the meat and in my opinion that's what makes or breaks the dish. The looks confirmed my assumption as I was told that it was just ok. The service was good as we got seated quickly but it went downhill from there. First, when our food arrived as it was being placed on the table, one server decided to hand it across the table and stuff in the plate fell into my friend's lap, good thing it was just the vinegar sauce that was in a container. But way pass the plate from across the table? and the person didn't even apologize. Next, the server only came by once to refill our waters once. It's not like it was busy. Then when the server finally came, it was just to plop our check on the table and didn't even ask if we needed anything else or how was everything. The staff just sat at the bar talking as if they were the customers. We wondered if they were coming over to take payment and as we tried to get their attention, they avoided looking our way. We finally got the attention of a staff member and let them know we wanted to pay and he told us we had to go to the front. Yet, no one was there. We stood there for about 2 minutes. Lastly, two people were sitting next to us and orders were taken but it seemed like it took a long time for their food to come. They tried to get the staff attention and they were ignored. Finally, someone came over and gave them an excuse that the system went down and had to be reset. What's the excuse if not checking in them? Maybe the staff needs to be reset. The food was average and the service was terrible. I wouldn't come back to this place just cause of the service. It is too bad cause I'd try other things as well.

And Baker's Square closed YEARS ago in SoCal. Missed their pies and baked goods! So imagine my (pleasant) surprise when I found this little place in Palatine! I decided to head there for a brekky on a cool May morning. Stepped in, saw all the breads, pastries, and pies along the front counters- wow. I was greeted warmly and seated instantly. My waitress came right away, and I ordered unleaded (decaf for those in the know). It came in a little pot, ala IHOP, and was really, really GOOD. Wow. Decaf has come a long ways from the Sanka days! I ordered the INN-CREDIBLE V.I.B. which allowed me to order 4 yummy items of my choice - I chose the french toast (yummy and spiced just right albeit w/room temp syrup- not a deal-breaker but notable), a strawberry crepe (totally awesome strawberries, but the crepe was a bit colder than expected); scrambled eggs (always a nice stalwart) and two turkey sausage links (as with the frenchie above, nicely flavored!). The ambience was modern, updated, and felt welcoming and (thankfully) a bit familiar. Brought back some good ol' memories even if only the Baker's Square part of the menu was just pies nowadays. But the Village Inn lives on! And that counts - and I'll return. You should check it out too if you enjoy a good brekky at a classic American diner!
