I'll be surprised if the fire commissioner allows crowds of over 75 in that place. And I say that as a former firefighter, it's not a very big place. It is a cash only bar, which can get annoying because if you don't tip after every order, you'd be ignored the next time you want to order. No elbow room at the bar. The stools are very close together. I could see myself going back there, maybe in the daytime when it's slow, but I definitely wouldn't go on a Friday or Saturday night when everyone is out bar hopping

The flatbread is huge--at least two meals' worth--as are the salads. Beer's available in full pours, half pours, and flights, so it's easy to sample a few in one sitting. And don't miss the specials--especially inventive soups. There's plenty of seating options, too--a nice patio, bar stools, and a couple rooms full of tables and booths. Cheers!

There is ample space inside and out, and it's all very open and clean, though the inside dining areas are separated into large rooms, which I think would help with noise control when it's busy. We visited around 7:45 on a Friday evening in August and found it remarkably not crowded, but they have another location in Cedar Falls that probably draws a larger crowd. We were at the Waterloo location, which probably caters to a lot of business people and business travelers during the week. We ordered a lot of food for two people, and it was all excellent, but I rate this cool place four stars because all the food came out of the kitchen at once and we were totally overwhelmed. If it had been paced, I think we could have pulled it off, and as travelers, we couldn't really take leftovers with us to have another day. Our server was extremely helpful and patient helping me understand their beverage selections. I enjoy a good cocktail or a glass of good wine, but my beer tastes are even more limited, but SingleSpeed offered up the perfect solution: the SingleSpeed-a-rita. This is made with their Ring Around the Gose, tequila, agave, and lime juice. That hit the spot on a hot Friday night in Iowa!

This may well be the best place in America to celebrate Nikola Tesla's Serbian heritage. For those…read moreof you not in the know, there is only one way to celebrate Nikola Tesla's heritage, and that is by listening to a Serbian anthem in 7/4 time. On autorepeat. An anthem whose only recognizable word to those not fluent in Serbian, is "Tesla." Drinking on a Sunday afternoon can be a slow way to get your day started, but the owner is there to boost morale. "Nikola Tesla!" he shouts, pumping his fist into the air. "Serbia!" Occasionally the Serbian anthology CD would slip into track 2, a jovial polka, until the owner slaps his slouching bartender on the back. "Nikola Tesla!" Barkeep dutifully repeats track one, sits back upright and earnestly offers us another drink. There's also an espresso machine here. The espresso is really, really good. You're not supposed to find good espresso in a depressed, post-industrial Iowan backwater like Waterloo. "Nikola Tesla!" the owner shouts. "Serbia!" One hour and forty five minutes later, the ode to Nikola Tesla is still playing on autorepeat, but by then I had the courage (Miller Lite) and my friend the caffeine (several espressos) to finally get us out of this wonderful ethnic dive.
