When my sister had a mini stroke that left her unable to read, Crane-Lee said two things that may have killed my sister and could have killed any number of other people as well. First she correctly guessed that my sister had experienced a stroke, and she told my sister that she could drive if she felt like it. The most likely thing after a person has a stroke is a second stroke. The number one rule is to get to the hospital immediately. Secondly, she said that my sister could go to the ER, but she might have to wait all night, that she could line up various appointments instead. That is utterly ridiculous. When a stroke patient is taken to the INOVA Fairfax ER, s/he's going to be in a bed the minute after s/he signs in. There are numerous hospital-wide announcements every time a potential stroke victim is headed for the hospital. I was there for two months last year and I heard those announcements all the time. They take things very seriously in that ER. I was in a bed moments after I signed in. So was a friend with a broken arm. In fact, my sister did have a second stroke, after which she did go to the hospital, but it was apparently too late. I would assign a Minus Ten if I could.

Then something changed. I think Dr Lewis sold the practice and they definitely got new front desk people. The new front desk is far less responsive to phone calls. They are not even in the same building as the nurses and doctors, so getting messages from the front office to the nurses and doctors is now very inefficient. Medications, like an albuteral inhaler and diazapam, meds that can be dangerous if stopped abruptly, are now a cause of anxiety because I never know of they will take a day or a week to write a refill. I will keep seeing Dr Lewis, but now I know that when I'm out of refills I need to make a visit to see him if I want refills in a timely manner. Luckily I have great insurance so this is not a problem for me, except for the time it takes to make an appointment that used to just be a phone call.

The new owners have new policies that are unreasonable and absolutely ridiculous. Never in my life have I had to pay to pick up a refill to receive my prescriptions. So I paid out of pocket for my visit as I'm uninsured ( fine no prob ) I have to go back every month and pay $40 just to pick up my prescriptions ( nurses visit ) what kind of bullshit is that?! That is absurd and I will be looking into if it's even legal or not. I don't understand how u can charge someone that needs a refill for a prescription you wrote, when technically that is included in the price of ur visit. WTF. It's basically extortion. I'm beyond livid and confused.

After waiting days for the nurse to call, I finally got the call and she told me to JUST GO TO THE ER. The ER contacted a dr. on call who told the ER to write me a script for just one day, as they would see me the next day. Then the next day they told me they could not see me and it was a miscommunication in the office! Mind you, the whole time their was bad communication and the nurse was never timely, and the Dr. never called me once! Then they finally refered me to a pain management clinic the one good thing they did. However, I still had an appointment with them the following week. After I did not show up, bc i thought that I was seeing the pain dr. only from then on, the nurse called me and said, 'well maybe sinc you didnt show up we won't authorize the referall for the pain clinic for your insurance.' This was a threat, and it dealt directly with my health. Do not go here, Warning.

Dr. David Leonard of Family Practice of Fairfax has been my physician for about 15 years now. He…read moreis a wonderful physician; I could not recommend him more highly! I moved to the DC area in 1994 and it took a good deal of trial, error and sleuthing to find a good primary care physician. Oh boy. And patience, as Dr. Leonard is so beloved by his patients, he does not always have availability. He has been the recipient of the Washingtonian Magazines "Best Physicians of the Washington DC Area" for several years. Nowadays, it is really hard to find a physician who can, and will, take time with a patient. (I don't blame the physicians, its the situation for the rare independent practice). But Dr. Leonard DOES. It is apparent that he loves interacting with his patients, loves medicine, puts the patient first. Another thing: Dr. Leonard has consistently given me great recommendations when I needed to visit a specialist. Dr. Leonard's office, from an administrative perspective, has had its ups and downs over the years. But the caliber of his care is such that I always waded through. But this is the reality of the private practice business model--ITS STRESSED RIGHT NOW. But I have to say that Family Practice is extremely efficient now that it has moved to a blend of concierge with open private practice partners. I could not recommend Dr. Leonard more highly.

About a decade into our relationship, Dr. Joseph diagnosed my uticaria, or chronic hives. "You know, Ms. Weber, that 50% of these cases are caused by stress." Intent on a physical cause, I clearly remember saying to him... "I am not stressed!" When they laid me off from work, which apparently they had been planning, and apparently of which I was subconsciously aware, the hives cleared up in two weeks. Then I had a serving of humble pie, and a case of aren't-I-glad-Dr.-Joseph-is-my-doctor. The main concern for you at this point is Dr. Joseph is reaching retirement age. You don't want to be like me and wonder how much I am going to dislike the young whippersnapper who follows. I am not stressed! In reading the other reviews, I agree that there has been a problem with his office staff. There was one head nurse who was specifically a problem. Despite my complaint, he retained her until her poor health led to her retirement. Mary, who has tried to retire from his practice, is excellent. Other staff members are still gaining experience.

While…read moreI recognize some doctors are part of different offices, it is confusing when you are calling for appointments. Second, the walls are THIN. While in the exam room, I could hear the doctor next door on a video call telling another patient she needed a hysterectomy. I hope things get better for that patient. For my appointment, I told the scheduling office that I needed a doctor that was familiar with a specific condition and its subsequent issues. The only positive is that the doctor I did meet with sat me down in their office to talk, but it went down hill from there. They asked me about my symptoms. After less than a minute, the doctor interrupts me. I am not going to go into details about my medical appointment, but I left feeling dismissed. The solutions the doctor offered did not align with what I was able to do. When I tried to say I couldn't do those because of past history, they pushed back about it being an "industry standard." I left pretty upset because I wasted personal leave and a copay only to not feel heard. I will not be going back and I will be writing the office management.
