I had high hopes for Anna Mae's and perhaps that was my undoing. Braving the wind, I biked up to KX Blvd to finally give them a go. It was a tough choice between the Rib Man and Anna Mae's but I thought that if I'm going to be a foodie I should try new things. Even if that new thing is an old standard comfort food: mac'n'cheese.
AM is highly rated by most of my friends, and as far as the mac'n'cheese went, it was pretty good. Clean sharp flavours hit your tongue with every bite and there is a mellow background note that ties things together. I think my one comment would be that its lacking a bit of body to linger on the tongue but that's probably more a personal preference.
The part that let me down was the pulled pork and bbq sauce that topped by Piggy Smalls (alright...you get points for the name, AM). The pork was tender enough but flavourless and slightly dry. The bbq sauce may have had sufficient flavour but the miniscule portion I got wasn't enough to really be sure. Add to that the ratio of mac'n'cheese to pork was abou 10:1 and I was left with cheese pasta after a minute. While yes, it was fairly good cheese pasta, I need my meat!
Prices are a tad high for what you get with the Piggy Smalls being around a fiver.
If I had a chance to do it over, I'd opt for the mac'n'cheese from AM topped with a generous helping of rib meat from the Rib Man and douse the whole thing with some Holy F*ck sauce. That would be a quality Piggy Smalls! read more
