1-Star Review -- Extremely Disappointed After 8+ Years…read more This has become an embarrassment for the University of Michigan. I have been a patient at the University of Michigan Dental School for more than eight years, and I have never experienced anything remotely as frustrating, dysfunctional, and poorly managed as what I am dealing with now. Let me be very clear: the dentists and dental students have generally been excellent. The problem is everything surrounding them -- administration, scheduling, IT, management, and the telephone system. The system is an absolute mess. You can't get anyone on the phone. People don't return calls. Messages don't seem to get handled. Trying to schedule or resolve even a basic issue has become an exercise in frustration. And when you finally do manage to communicate with someone, you can end up feeling like you're being blamed for problems created by their own system. What's particularly disturbing is that the dental students themselves are frustrated by this system. When the people working inside the organization are telling you they're frustrated with the same problems patients are experiencing, somebody in management needs to start paying attention. This isn't some minor inconvenience. This is a basic customer-service and administrative failure. After putting up with this for years, I have finally had enough. I have already found another provider for my wife, and I will be taking my own dental care elsewhere. After eight years as a patient, that should tell management just how badly this situation has deteriorated. The University of Michigan has an outstanding reputation, which makes this experience even more disappointing. The quality of the dental professionals is being overshadowed by an administrative system that appears completely incapable of serving its patients properly. Patients should not have to spend their time repeatedly calling, leaving messages, trying to figure out how to reach a real person, and then dealing with an attitude that makes them feel like they've done something wrong. We are patients--not problems to be managed. Someone in upper management needs to take responsibility for this. The phone system needs to work. Patients need to be able to reach people. Calls need to be returned. Scheduling needs to be handled competently. And when something goes wrong, patients should be treated with respect instead of being made to feel like criminals for trying to resolve the problem. Eight years of loyalty should mean something. Unfortunately, it apparently doesn't. I would strongly caution anyone considering this facility to understand what they may be getting into on the administrative side. The dentists and students may be excellent, but getting through the bureaucracy surrounding them has become unacceptable. University of Michigan Dental School: you can do better. Much better. Your patients--and your students--deserve better than this. One star, and only because zero stars isn't an option.

I was running late this morning and worried about finding a spot in this normally crowded neighborhood, but I was relieved to find that they have patient parking spots on Catherine, just around the corner from the front door on Ingalls. Both hygienists I've seen are friendly and professional. Dr. Dailey makes me feel assured that she would notice anything amiss, even if I didn't feel any symptoms. She's big on preventative care, such as prescribing fluoride treatments to stave off incipient cavities. Overall, Dr. Dailey's office is pleasant, professional, and competent!

Dr. Dailey worked very hard to get the first appliance to fit correctly, and it served me well for years. The second was even better--incredibly comfortable, albeit very expensive (worth it if it helps). A short time later, however, a full sleep study done at U of M showed that I had very significant continuing symptoms of sleep apnea, and my sleep specialist asked me to get in touch with Dr. Dailey to get her recommendations. That was more than a month and a half ago. Since then, I have been trying to reach her or to get feedback from her, via her staff, which has been an exercise in frustration. The process of trying to reach someone in Dr. Dailey's office is absurdly complex, a Kafka-esque nightmare! First, you call and almost inevitably you reach voicemail, telling you to "leave your name and number, and we will get back to you as soon as we can". So you leave your name and number, and perhaps a description of the issue; Sometime later, you inevitably receive a text message telling you to leave a text message (why weren't you told that in the first place?) and someone will get back to you within 24 hours. So you leave a text message (I did that on May 5, 2022) and wait weeks...and weeks...and weeks. Many weeks later you receive a text message (which you fail to notice in the midst of all the junk texts you receive, telling you to come in for an appointment, which will cost $200.00, which you cannot afford. When you do finally manage to reach Dr. Dailey's assistant, Annette, she agrees to go over your records and she states she will get back to you next week with feedback. That happened to me several weeks ago, and I have yet to hear from Annette. It has been more than a month and one-half since I first called, trying to reach someone. it is now June 20, 2022. I am completely frustrated with the situation and worn down by it, and cannot bear to leave one more message. What can the problem possibly be? Annette wears multiple hats at the clinic. Is she spread too thin? is the office regularly understaffed? Are they not able to hold onto employees? All I can say is that the office set-up is a hot mess. I am left with a comfortable oral appliance for sleep apnea that is not helping me. Dr. Dailey's wonderful skills are useless to me if I cannot effectively communicate with her office or with her about problems with my appliance. I am sorely disappointed!!
