We toured a couple of apartments in Old Town managed by MREM, looking for a 2-bedroom. One of the…read moreplaces was listed as a 2-bedroom, at 2-bed price, but when we see the place, one of the rooms was only accessible through another "bedroom." It was a living room with a door, not legally considered a bedroom in most places, not to mentioned it was way more cramped than the AI-generated photos implied, and it had a stale cigarette smell after presumably being empty for two years (as far as I could tell from the listing dates and price changes on Zillow). Every one of their apartments looks the same: dingy, outdated bedrooms with the bare minimum (toilet, stove, etc) going for the prices of legitimate apartments, using AI photos to "imagine" what the spaces could look like. Get corporations out of housing in Maine if they're going to just buy up all the properties to bleed us of our rent.

There was a past due water bill with the Town that they never took care of so I could not get the water into my name. After I had moved out they finally paid the bill. I did receive a bill and paid for the quarter I lived there. 6 months later I received another water bill and the Town will not stop sending me bills until the new tenant puts the water into their name. I can not reach anyone. I have called and emailed. No response. While I was a tenant ,the smoke alarms would go off if I so much as ran the toaster. Someone did come out to look at the detectors but there was no fix. It seemed like they were hard wired as when one went off, they all went off. I tried turning off the breaker labeled smoke detectors, nothing happened. I even took batteries out and they still went off. The lack of response from the rental office is extremely frustrating. I would not recommend going through this company for a rental.

We rented at 12 Knollwood Drive, Apartment 30 from June of 2020 through June of 2021. When we…read morearrived on move-in day, we noticed that the walls had not been cleaned and painted as we were told they would be. We also discovered that contrary to what we were told, the carpets were not cleaned. We rented a carpet cleaner and were disgusted by the dirt that was removed. We also dealt with a continuous mildew/ mold issue and had to throw out most of our bedroom furniture due to this. We left as soon as our lease was up. I would think twice before renting here.

I rented Apartment 33 at Knollwood from July '12 to July '13 and, although the Apartment was…read morerelatively new and my stay was uneventful, my departure has left a bad taste in my mouth and I need to warn any new renters that they shouldn't expect their deposit to be returned regardless of what condition they left the apartment in. When I moved in a gentleman came over to conduct an initial inspection of the property. The inspection took all of ten minutes and the only thing noted was a iron burn on the carpet. The apartment had not been painted between tenants. Since it was summer the windows were opened the moment I arrived and it wasn't until I bought a window air conditioner and closed the windows that I noticed the strong pet urine odor in the Apartment. I tried to live with it but, every time I opened the door the odor hit me in the face. I rented a machine, as I cleaned I found the carpets were truly filthy, a big yellow urine stain well hidden by the berber carpet in the living room, the spare bedroom smelled so bad it was never used for anything but storage. The Landlord came over, told me the carpets were cleaned and professed not to smell anything. At least he was was kind enough to deduct the $75 it cost me to rent the machine. I cleaned it twice, used pet odor neutralizer and the smell was reduced but, it never went completely away. I decided to live with it. When I got a new job I called Hughes Associates (the realty company representing the owner) to give my notice mid-July and was told an e-mail address to submit in writing. I heard nothing from them in return and the office was empty every time I called. I just received my final bill for the apartment and, not only was my $850 deposit exhausted but, I still have a $10 balance due! From what I can see, the inspection was conducted with the fine toothed comb he neglected to bring the last time he was there. The inspection conveniently happened after I left so, I had no input in the process. They say they didn't get my e-mail termination until 19 days after I left (over a month after I sent it) because the e-mail address I was given by them wasn't the one they used but, somehow, an inspection was conducted five days after I walked out the door. My fiancee flew up to help with the move and cleaned the apartment from top to bottom, cabinets inside and out, the oven cleaned twice and new reflectors installed on the burners, and it was left in as good, if not better condition than when I arrived. From the inspection report one would be lead to believe that the place was filthy when we left. I was charged $210 for general cleaning, $175 for carpet cleaning (I hope it wasn't the same crew that cleaned them before I arrived), $120 for paint and patch. By contrast, I left my previous Apartment in Monroeville, PA and the only charge was $65 for carpet cleaning, the remainder of my deposit was returned and the walls were all patched and freshly painted without charge to me as they were before I moved in. If you do decide to rent at Knollwood, be thorough with the move in inspection and take lots of photos as you are in for a fight to get any of your deposit back. That and don't expect the parking lot to be plowed before noon, the walkways and entries not at all.

My daughter had a truly bizarre experience renting an apartment under this company's management…read more The landlady was intrusive and violated law after law. The heat was turned off and locked below legal standards during the winter, time and time again. She clearly thought her tenant would be "just" a college kid without any real world intelligence or knowledge of legal rights. She eavesdropped. Snooped in windows. Entered without permission on multiple occasions. Went through cabinets. I even caught her standing outside in the dark, looking through the items in the bed of my truck as we helped her move out. I could go on. When it came time to move, my daughter was told the property was under new management. Then it wasn't. Then it was again. At one point she was told nobody was managing the property. We all helped her pack up and clean when moving.. that place was left cleaner than it was found, along with some updated fixtures that my daughter purchased and left in place. Still, she was charged "4 hrs of cleaning at $20/per hour". Legally, security deposits may only be withheld from to make repairs needed to *restore* a space.. ie repair holes in walls, cracked toilet ect.. NOT dusting and mopping (an already clean space.) I would proceed with extreme caution renting from a company that would stand behind a property owner like this. Truly the stuff of nightmares. And lawsuits.
