I paid $1,600 for a two-week board-and-train program for my dog, Scubi. I enrolled him primarily…read morebecause I needed help with leash pulling and his reactivity toward other dogs while on leash. Scubi remained with the trainer for two weeks and three days. During that time, I repeatedly asked for updates, photos, and videos. The contract states that owners are guaranteed one video of their dog per week. I did not receive any training videos during his stay. During the board-and-train, I was also told that the extreme heat was limiting how much the dogs could be worked. When Scubi was returned to me, however, he was brought to my home at approximately 3:30 in the afternoon when the temperature was around 100 degrees. The turnover demonstration was conducted outside in my front yard. Scubi was very hot and dirty when he came home, and I was told that I should have him groomed/bathed. Something that immediately concerned me happened during the turnover. The trainer told Scubi to sit, and Scubi did not sit. I was then shown that if he didn't respond, I could physically prompt him by placing my hand on his back/rear area. During the turnover, I was shown how to use commands such as heel, hold, and place. I was also told that if I allowed Scubi to jump on me, he would jump on other people. However, I was not shown at that time how to stop or correct the jumping behavior. One of the primary reasons I sent Scubi to board-and-train was his leash pulling and his behavior toward other dogs. On my very first walk after getting him home, I experienced the same behaviors I had experienced before training. He pulled heavily on the leash and reacted toward other dogs. The first portion of the walk was extremely difficult before he eventually began settling down. I contacted the trainer and explained what was happening. I was told that he had not seen Scubi behave that way while Scubi was with him. I asked for additional help because I was struggling with the very behaviors I had sent Scubi to training to address. I continued working with Scubi myself after he came home. I shortened his leash, practiced heel and hold, changed directions, created distance from other dogs, and worked on having him sit and remain controlled when another dog was nearby. Despite those efforts, shortly after his return there was a serious incident while I was walking him. Scubi lunged toward a passing dog, I lost control of the leash, and the other dog attacked him. Scubi sustained injuries to his ear and neck. Because I was concerned about what I was seeing, I subsequently had another dog-training professional observe Scubi. Her professional observations further contributed to my concerns about the level of training Scubi demonstrated after completing the board-and-train program. I requested a refund from Next-Door K9 and was denied. I then disputed the $1,600 financing through Affirm based on my concerns about Scubi's behavior after he returned from the board-and-train program and my dissatisfaction with the services I received. Affirm denied my dispute. The stated reason for its decision was "Merchant followed posted refund policy." The contract states that refunds are in the sole discretion of Next-Door K9 Solutions. Therefore, I remain responsible for paying the financing. I want to be clear about what I can and cannot say. I was not present during the two weeks Scubi was in the trainer's care, so I cannot personally say what training occurred during that time. I can only describe what I experienced before I sent him, the communication and videos I received while he was there, and what I observed when he came home. Based on my experience, I was extremely disappointed with this board-and-train program. I paid $1,600 specifically for help with behaviors that I was still dealing with immediately after Scubi returned home. I'm sharing my experience so that other dog owners considering a board-and-train program can ask questions, understand exactly what they will receive, and make their own informed decision.
