Recently, I was at the Castro Street Fair and went to their booth with my kids where the founder, Jamai, was working.

UPDATE: SECOND CHANCES HAS CLOSED. This store is no longer around…read more ------- (My original review below. Leaving it for nostalgia's sake.) I have been a customer of Second Chances for years, and keep coming back. The owner Leandra is friendly, the prices are reasonable, and in addition to quality used clothing, baby slings, and shoes (affordable, quality used shoes!) there is always a good selection of used toys. There is also a large selection of new toys, mainly the Melissa and Doug brand. If you like that brand, as many do, you will be pleased to find the largest selection of their products I have seen anywhere. As far as bringing things in to consign in the shop, I have had no problems. It helps, I'm sure, that I don't expect her to take everything I bring in (far from it--usually about 20%?), and also, I am not looking for top dollar so much as I am looking to get rid of things. If I am looking for top dollar, or am really attached to something, I post it on eBay or Craigslist--but that goes without saying, I think. It is a great store. Kid friendly to the extreme --Leandra has never been the least bit phased about my kids running around and playing with the unwrapped toys in the store, of which there are plenty, while I shop. I always feel like they ransack the place a bit, and she never seems to mind in the least! (Of course I keep an eye on them as I can, and always tidy up afterwards.) My kids beg to come here! One day when it works out with our schedule, I intend to sign up for the weekly music class offered in her spacious and sunny community room. Or one of the other activities; there are several offerings. I've heard good things about the Spanish class. Second Chances is a true gem, and a fantastic resource for parents in South Amherst! Definitely check it out if you haven't!

Second Chances has been a life saver for my family!!…read more As a working mom with a growing 8-year old daughter I've been able to find age-appropriate clothing here since she was a baby. Leandra, the store owner, helped me navigate choices of baby carriers and baby slings, snow suits, buying baby utensils, lunch boxes, books, pieces for school costumes and Halloween here, birthday trinkets for my daughter's friends and when your child grows mid-season, this store can help with season-appropriate clothing when other stores are selling bathing suits in the middle of winter! Second Chances has helped tremendously with my clothing budget for my daughter as well. I have been a consigner there for a few years now. I bring in clothes, shoes and some toys. Leandra has high standards in selecting pieces that she'll take on and re-sell. (This is *not* like going to any thrift store like the Goodwill or Salvation Army. She won't just take bags of clothes.) I appreciate her care in selecting the items because when I, in turn buy pieces that other moms/dads/grandparents have brought in to consign I know I am buying gently used quality piece that will last the season for my daughter. New clothing and toys are also sold at this store. We get art supplies and travel toys here for our road trips every summer. Money earned through consignment can be used toward purchasing new items as well as the consigned items. Second Chance also has become a communal hub with their community room that offers play groups, yoga for moms and kids, activities for after-school and a drop-in play space for toddlers. It is a nice offering in the South Amherst area for the neighborhood.

We didn't want to go public with the actual name we'd chosen for him before he was born, and for the purposes of this review, I'll refer to him as Ichabod. Hey, it's nostalgic. After "Ichabod" was born, one of the nicest baby gifts we received was from our cousins - a soft white towel with colorful trains on it, and his name on it. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FVluLU0ipBv3FoeRsBmo1g?select=-bfU5BxCC7DGP8EsUxeJLA Ichabod is not a common name, so it's not like our cousins just picked it up at the store. Our son loves his train towel, and uses it after every bath. Our friends just had a baby and named her Paisley. We thought this would be a perfect present for her. We called my cousin so we could give this great gift to our friends. It comes in a variety of colors and designs (butterflies, fairies, ducks, fire trucks, dinosaurs, zoo animals, fish, sailboats, etc.), and you can have other things personalized, including: * Towels * Hooded towels * Bibs * Spa wrap * Holiday stocking * Pail and shovel This makes a thoughtful gift for any kid and is very high quality. You can order online or over the phone. Ichabod loves his unique towel, and I think we'll buy others - especially for other kids with unusual names.

After he was born I ordered a towel w/ sailboats and his name on it. I ended up calling to order it rather than going through the site because I don't like PayPal, which they use. It's a long story. Don't ask. The woman I spoke to was friendly and warm. She was a little apologetic that it would take maybe three weeks, I told her not to worry about it, that I'd waited this long to contact her and could wait a little longer. We agreed the baby wouldn't know the difference. The towel arrived while we were in KC and I opened it last night when we got home. It is a gorgeous blue, soft and beautifully crafted. I just love it and so will Mommy and Baby, I think. Enclosed was a sweet note w/ another apology for the wait and a coupon for a discount on my next order. Well, I have a little great niece who will be turning 2 this summer and could use a towel w/ her name on it. I look forward to choosing the color and design. This will not be my last purchase here. I think the prices are extremely reasonable and the website gives you a good sense of her products, which Jennifer lists in more detail in her review.

One of the things that makes Northampton, well, Northampton, is Essentials. I started shopping at…read moreEssentials almost twenty years ago, and it's been a staple of my quirky life ever since. It's changed hands twice in my awareness, and just keeps getting better and better with age. This is a design-focused, design-heavy shop, and there are things I can pretty much only get AT Essentials; for instance, they've got a cut-to-custom-length ribbon bar, and some of that ribbon is vintage, and my absolute favorite is the hand-dyed silk. Also, they've got the best collection of Tintin and other European character favorites (like Barbapapa and Babar) this side of the pond. Oh, and the staff is wonderful. Knowledgable, friendly, thoughtful, and creative. Over the years, the cast of characters has changed, but it's always top-shelf. One giant boon: they've helped me put together a gift in no time, saving my bacon on numerous occasions! On a typical day, you can find stationery of all kinds, the indier the better; dishware; rubber stamps; intriguing books (think Chronicle); bath goods; bags of all shapes, sizes, and purposes; clothes and scarves; eight million things for kids, from blankies to onesies to stuffed alligators; jewelry; small home goods; special pens; DIY kits; custom furniture; large sheets of beautiful artisan paper; and a ton of things I'm forgetting. And one other thing about Essentials I am not forgetting, but which I saved for last, because it's my favorite. Essentials has an in-house design and print studio. And they also work with a select group of indie designers and printers who create everything from business cards to party invites. Here is where Colette, the current owner, really freaking shines, in my opinion. There was one thing I wanted when it came time to get married. One. Thing. That one thing was letterpress wedding invitations from Essentials. Colette took us from beautiful nebulous idea to flawlessly-executed product without ever breaking a sweat. I don't know if you've ever worked with people who are about to get married, but we are not always the most poised, cool-headed, or unflappable of people; Colette sat us down in the big comfy chairs and made sketches and phone calls, and really made our family feel like we were the only people in the entire world. Go see what I'm talking about - our invitation is probably still hanging in its golden-framed, green-paper-backed glory. Nearly four thousand miles away now, and I'm still bouncing in my chair as I look forward to my next trip to Essentials, whenever it may be.

We received a lovely gift of several girls garments, however we have a male child. The store manager, who did not have the courage to call us, rather made a sales associate do their work, informed us without a receipt we can not get a store credit. So wonderful Essentials, you made some money from this sale, but you lost a lot more revenue from this here shopper.
