I've got a smile on my face just writing about it! The selection of ales was a relatively familiar one, with a tasty exception in Golden Pippen, delicious. They had 5 others, including a couple that have to be brought up from the cellar in a jug (a few places locally do this and boast of doing this..not quite sure why it is such a big deal). Was surprised and happy to see Dark Star Hophead so far from home too. Quite a bit of food choice, including a selection of pies. I braved the game pie as it contained venison and pheasant, neither of which I had previously sampled. This was nice too. The pub really can do no wrong! It was seriously difficult tearing myself away from the Hollybush, to try some other local pubs.

The fairly cluttered layout identifies it as a historic pub, there are several designated areas so it won't get *too* loud even when busy [which it mostly is in the evenings]. Good food, wide variety of real ales and ciders on tap (large rather than particularly distinguished on my visit), good atmosphere. It's a 10 minute walk from the nearest bus station in Milford, a little remote and easy to miss (God bless Google Maps!). Very popular with the locals. There are several good pubs within a short radius (this one, the Strutt-on-Arms & the King Williams IV). Get a zig-zag ticket on the Sixes buses from Derby so you can hop on and off at the various stops of your crawl.

There is some the seating that I snot so hard and uncomfortable but they go quick. There is a steep uneven pathway up to the pub itself. This place was busy even on a Saturday lunch I would recommend but not for disabled or elderly people.

Super tasty quality food, I noticed that on the menu it even tells you which farm the meat came from, or where the ice cream was made etc. The Greek Lamb and the Gammon are both brilliant. The portions are huge and I'm always left with enough food for another meal but save room for the Holly Bush sundae because you wont ever have a such a selection of tasty locally made ice cream :) The prices are great too, last time I went it was around 30quid for the 2 of us.

The pub has won many awards in previous years, and it's notable for it being split up into rooms of various sizes and shapes, ideal if you're with a small group and don't enjoy the rather noisy area around the bar. There's also a (modest) beer garden at the rear. Beers served include those made by its own house brewery. The beers themselves are well-kept and fresh, which I've come to expect from a Cask Marque pub. The place can get noisy and very busy in the evening, and - to be blunt - some of the folks gathered there tend to be a little rough, if you know what I mean. I forgot a tablet there a year ago which never turned up - normally one would expect punters to hand in devices found on the premises, sadly this was not the case here. So my impression of the crowd at The Brunswick might be a bit clouded - but it is certainly not as friendly and "family-like" a place as other real ale pubs in Derby, like The Flower Pot, The Five Lamps or The Exeter Arms. There weren't many people on entering for dinner, but being early that was to be expected. A point against them would be that the bartender was sitting by his friends but being so empty we didn't really mind and they wern't disturbing us. Serving a vegetarian a senior and a student they were flexible compared with many pubs, only a few vegetarian options but no mind given, whilst there was a wide range of ales and choice meals for the rest of us normal people ;) The surf and turf I had was delicious, the steak cooked how I liked with not your typical, greasy pub chips. Similarly the chilli con carne and the scampi for my companions was quite good with little to no faults, honest pub food and drink across the board with a good price. All in all with satisfactory service; decent menu choice, great food and a rustic if quiet setting, if you're looking for a meal in the general area a recommend.

If you decide not to drink or get nominated as the driver, then there are plenty of parking spaces available. The only other option would be to get a taxi. The pub itself is okay, but is nothing to shout about. The staff are friendly and polite, and the pub itself is of a decent size. There are also a couple of pool tables in the back room. The atmosphere is not bad, but given the pubs location, I wouldn't make a special effort to travel out there for a drink or two. It is probably on a par with most of the other smaller pubs in the local area.
