This is such a charming pub. Well worth the trek I had to…read morefind it. It looks fantastic, a real gem and had such friendly people on both sides of the bar. I've got a smile on my face just writing about it! The selection of ales was a relatively familiar one, with a tasty exception in Golden Pippen, delicious. They had 5 others, including a couple that have to be brought up from the cellar in a jug (a few places locally do this and boast of doing this..not quite sure why it is such a big deal). Was surprised and happy to see Dark Star Hophead so far from home too. Quite a bit of food choice, including a selection of pies. I braved the game pie as it contained venison and pheasant, neither of which I had previously sampled. This was nice too. The pub really can do no wrong! It was seriously difficult tearing myself away from the Hollybush, to try some other local pubs.

The fairly cluttered layout identifies it as a historic pub, there are several designated areas so it won't get *too* loud even when busy [which it mostly is in the evenings]. Good food, wide variety of real ales and ciders on tap (large rather than particularly distinguished on my visit), good atmosphere. It's a 10 minute walk from the nearest bus station in Milford, a little remote and easy to miss (God bless Google Maps!). Very popular with the locals. There are several good pubs within a short radius (this one, the Strutt-on-Arms & the King Williams IV). Get a zig-zag ticket on the Sixes buses from Derby so you can hop on and off at the various stops of your crawl.

You can either have a reservation for full service or order at the bar and get food delivered to you. Food options were great, I went with the whole food salad with kofta and halloumi and the dish was just perfection in a plate for a salad! My colleagues ordered the steak pies and fish and chips! All looked amazing! Dessert sticky toffee and that was perfect ending to a great meal! Highly recommended for dinner or to hang out!! Dog friendly! And there is a car park!

It was busy today but not quite as full. We went into the lounge and were greeted by very freindly staff. There was a carvery on and at £6.95 each we had to try it. The meat and Yorkshire Pud that were put onto our plate were well cooked and the meat was nice and tender we both went for Pork so I cannot comment on the beef the peices of Pork were a good size and enough meat for any healthy person. We then piled our plates with veg which were all cooked brilliantly and the roast potatos had a hint of garlic. We both cleared our plates and were well and trully stuffed. For drinks I had a Marstons pedigree which was just the right temparature and tasted very good. All in all for under £20 for a meal and a drink I must put this at the top of the list for a Sunday Carvery staff were nice food good and building clean and tidy.

You have to wrestle with signaling how you want the steak or burger prepared. For steaks the options come up. For the burger you have to add in the "notes" section after all your selections (I was fearful it would come medium and Mrs G only eats well done - so I was nervous as hell until I saw the "notes" option right at the end. It is a joke and pain in the butt Mrs G has never met a pickle she did not like - she did yesterday (presumably old?) after taking one bite and spitting it out Her burger was dry and tasteless. 80% of the meal returned untouched (the staff never asked why) The steak was a 10oz sirloin but tough, chewy and seemed to have fat or gristle in every bite (even after doing the best surgery I could to remove it before putting in my mouth) Another major failing of the "menu" system is that you never get to see or read exactly what you are getting - nor can you ask a waiter any questions. So I ordered chips (fries) as a side (there are only 3-4 sides offered as I recall) to my steak for an additional £2.95 to my £18.95 sirloin steak. When it came I see for the first time that the steak comes with chips - so now I had a sea of chips!! I mentioned this to a server - who said - "oh yes, people complain about that all the time". A nice way to squeeze another £2.95 out of your customers - huh?! Will we ever go back, no.

Sept 2024 * Business Visited Saturday 28th Sept 2024 8pm…read moreFinally after many years of waiting the Abbey pub at Darley Abbey has reopened, my partner and I went Saturday, we were so looking forward to getting back into this lovely historic pub. However, sadly it seemed they were totally unprepared for the opening, which was actually the day before. The downstairs bar was not staffed but you could sit downstairs and enjoy the roaring open fire just like the good old days. The issue was groups of people were coming into the downstairs bar, taking seats and then standing at the bar to be served. At this point I found myself repeatedly having to inform them the bar was not staffed and they had to get their drinks from the bar upstairs. There was no signage telling customers of this situation and it was very strange, it was causing total confusion for a lot of customers. When I ordered my drinks at the upstairs bar I gave the man and women, who I assume were the new landlords a warm welcome, saying how much everyone was looking forward to finally getting the doors open. This was met with basically total indifference and a weak and begrudge smile, there was no response. I was left with a feeling that these new landlords really didn't want to be there and there was not one ounce of enthusiasm or customer engagement. My round, for a pint of larger and a pint of larger shandy came to £6.20, the same round thirty minutes later was £7. Even £7 is a good price but the change of price is worrying, maybe it was just getting used to the till. But I have to wonder what experience these new people have, where are their customer service skills, their interaction, the welcoming smile of the people behind the bar that encourages you to go back....or NOT Sadly we saw a lot of people on the night walk out after waiting a long time to be served, they simply walked over to the other pub thirty yards away. I can accept that new landlords have to settle in and find their feet in a new pub, but when they cant even get the basics right, like a sign saying THIS bar is NOT manned, and a warm welcoming smile with some polite conversation with customers that will support them in the future. You would expect on the second night of opening the landlords would want to make a good impression from the start, a nice smile, chit chat, some, a little ENTHUSIASM. Hundreds of pubs are shutting every year all around the UK and after years of waiting the Abbey has finally opened to a welcoming, enthusiastic and supportive customer base within the local and wider community. My partner and I will be going back in the hope it was just early doors teething problems which will be resolved, also in the hope the landlords manage to dig deep and find suitable and genuinely friendly personalities for their customers. They need to employ more staff, open the bar downstairs, get a grip of their drink prices and for God sake smile and put some effort into engaging with your customers in a warm and friendly manner. The Abbey is supposedly haunted by a friendly monk, lets hope its not now haunted by two unfriendly Landlords

The lady the behind the bar was very friendly and welcoming towards this German tourist, and I found it easy to talk to some of the patrons, too. The Samuel Smith beers are of very high quality, especially the Old Brewery Bitter (a cask-conditioned favorite) and the Pure Organic Lager; Samuel Smith have as many as four different lagers in their range, but this one is the best. You might also consider their various, mouth-watering fruit beers (bottled only). Darley is a picturesque little village, certainly worth a visit - and The Abbey Inn is the perfect place to unwind from a walk through Darley Park.

It is located just a three minute walk from Derby Midlands Station, but a little outside the city centre (10 minutes from Derby Bus Station e.g.). The pub has won many awards in previous years, and it's notable for it being split up into rooms of various sizes and shapes, ideal if you're with a small group and don't enjoy the rather noisy area around the bar. There's also a (modest) beer garden at the rear. Beers served include those made by its own house brewery. The beers themselves are well-kept and fresh, which I've come to expect from a Cask Marque pub. The place can get noisy and very busy in the evening, and - to be blunt - some of the folks gathered there tend to be a little rough, if you know what I mean. I forgot a tablet there a year ago which never turned up - normally one would expect punters to hand in devices found on the premises, sadly this was not the case here. So my impression of the crowd at The Brunswick might be a bit clouded - but it is certainly not as friendly and "family-like" a place as other real ale pubs in Derby, like The Flower Pot, The Five Lamps or The Exeter Arms. The décor is rather low-key and traditional, but the smaller size of the rooms adjacent to the bar area do give it a cosy feeling. Solely as a real ale pub it cannot be faulted.
