I am writing this about the restaurant only. I come here a couple times a year (spring and fall)…read morefor lunch and dinners for several years now. The menu has not changed in the years I have been coming here. They have a couple vegetarian options (grilled cheese on kids menu, cheese pizza) and no vegan options. The salad bar is lackluster; my vegetarian friend took one look and said "Uh no thanks" which was my thought too when I looked at it previously. The dining room and bar areas are nice and clean, bathrooms are clean and you can see into the kitchen which also looks clean. The food is good, not amazing. The service in the bar and dining room is great and friendly. The views are great from the bar and dining room looking at the Rainy River. They have a nice patio to enjoy when the weather and bugs are cooperating.

Full disclosure: I hate winter anyway but wanted to experience winter fishing at least once ! Our guides were always cheery and pleasant, even when they would have to keep replacing the many jigs we kept losing in the rocks. Shore luches were always a necessity. Dining room meals were always great, the portions hearty, and staff friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, fish are not guaranteed, but a great time is! Whenever I hear of someone headed to LOTW for fishing, I try to steer them to Ballard's. Fish on!

We visited Flag Island Resort in late January 2023. I have been taking groups to Lake of Woods &…read moreOntario fishing for the last 10 years. Groups vary in all sizes and ages. This was our first stay at Flag Island. Our cabin seemed brand new and was great. The bar and restaurant staff was on top of it and food was great. The ice fishing results were not up to expectations but not due to the lodge it was a cold front and ice fishing can get tricky. My only and biggest complaint was at check out. I was checking out for all 12 of us, which is typical I clean up the bill and everyone pays me later. The bill was considerably higher than our reservation. I asked about the difference and was told we they had a lodging increase and I received an email. I disagreed, she looked in the system and agreed an email was never sent, she changed the lodging rate. I paid the tab for 12 and we left on our way. Once home I dug further into the bill finding out two other charges that were off. One Vexilar charges that our group did not request, two the fishing charges were $360 higher than the reservation. I contracted the resort, the person who could handle this was off and they would get back later. Okay, I contacted them again weeks later, the response was they would refund the Vexilar charges but they are not going to credit me the fishing overage, any additional questions call the owner Chuck. So I called Chuck and let him know the story that we were never notified of an increase and due to the lack of notification we think we should be credited the amount. Chuck went on a rant about he is sick of these calls, he sold the resort and if I want my money back to sue him. We ended the phone call agreeing that he would check with the new owners to see what they wanted to do and he will call me back. No return call 10 days later so I called Chuck again. He checked with new owners and they own fourteen other resorts, industry standard does not require a notification of a price change. Also I did not have a reservation it was a quotation. I disagreed and gave him our reservation number and then he hung up on me. I contacted the lodge and they said he lost cell service, convenient. I let them know you can keep the Vexilar refund as they must need the money. I have met so many good people at fishing lodges in the last number of years. This is the first bad experience I have had and wanted to share. An owner telling me to sue him and hanging up on me. Wow! Life is too short, Chuck I hope you find a better place

THIS IS A FISHING LODGE, YOU COME HERE TO FISH!…read more This is a fishing lodge located on an Flag Island about 3 miles east of Angle Inlet, NW Angle MN. This location is the furthest point north in the contiguous USA , look it up. You are picked up by the resort staff at Angle Inlet and make then make the short 10 min trip out to the Island. Dan Schmidt may the trip special. He was unflappable, invariably courteous and helpful to any request we made, he never begins an answer with "we don't do that here"! The pricing for lodging and boat rental was competitive, it was separated out, you pay for what you use or need, nothing is tied up in a plan if you don''t want it. This is the fairest way to go! The cabin we stayed in was very nice, 3 bedrooms, large kitchen and eating area, and nice living room with patio doors and a large deck to sit on. It faced west so watching the sun go down was spectacular, Key West FL has nothing over this area of the world! What I found unusual was how well the cabins were kept up. So many resorts everything looks like a handyman built the property with the cheapest materials they could lay their hands, this was well constructed and would be nice even in the winter. Thew beds were firm, I'd guess new in the last 12 months, not the usual old lumpy mattresses that you feel like your back is broke in morning when you get up. Bath towels were normal human size, not postage stamp size and they were soft, not sandpaper rough like so many resorts. Our boat was great, had seen plenty of use but was good for the big water. I understand they will be getting new boats next year, I'm looking forward to that. The fishing was tremendous ..... somethings never change! Lake of the Woods, MN & Ontario is the best overall walleye muskie northern fishing in the USA. You can go a lot of place to fish but I'll go here over anyplace. There is no scenery like the Island areas on the lake and the big water areas will rival any sea or gulf for size, wait until you are out in 25 mph winds and you will understand how big this lake is. Bring a GPS this isn't a pond, this is the north woods!

The cabins are out of this world!! They have an old-world, woodsy feel but are completely furnished with everything you could need, excluding food but including internet, with a ton of backcountry, homey decor throughout. We chose the least expensive cabin and the moment we walked in we were stopped in our tracks, just looked around and said "WOW". Can't imagine the more expensive ones being any better, but talking to others, they are!!! They have a small convenience shop with pop, candy and some very nice souvenirs. You can rent a boat for fishing or just sightseeing around the lake (as we did). It's about a half hour ride over to Fort St. Charles - recommended. We only stayed one night and wish we stayed longer. Folks come back here year after year and we can see why. If visiting the Northwest Angle is on your bucket list, this is the place you will want to stay.
