Luckily there wasn't a lot of snow and we were able to get there from Zippel Bay Resort and rescue our wheel houses. We realize we are not your responsibility, but to just tell us to figure it out and not offer any help what so ever, we thought this was unforgiveable. So now we will be going out of Zippel Bay Resort they treat you very good there and they have steel bridges, a little farther to drive but well worth it. Better fishing also! All l'm saying is beware they are there to make that mighty dollar and really don't give a rats ass about there customers. I have waited all year for a chance to tell everyone. I'm sure there will be a lot of people that disagree with me and bash me for this, freedom of speech! If there would have been 3 feet of snow this would have cost us all lots of money to get our wheel houses off the lake. we told our story to the owners of Zippel Bay Resort and they said yes we are not there responsibility out there but they would never leave us stranded out there! Like Morris point did, when Al owned the place things were much better.

This was our first stay at Flag Island. Our cabin seemed brand new and was great. The bar and restaurant staff was on top of it and food was great. The ice fishing results were not up to expectations but not due to the lodge it was a cold front and ice fishing can get tricky. My only and biggest complaint was at check out. I was checking out for all 12 of us, which is typical I clean up the bill and everyone pays me later. The bill was considerably higher than our reservation. I asked about the difference and was told we they had a lodging increase and I received an email. I disagreed, she looked in the system and agreed an email was never sent, she changed the lodging rate. I paid the tab for 12 and we left on our way. Once home I dug further into the bill finding out two other charges that were off. One Vexilar charges that our group did not request, two the fishing charges were $360 higher than the reservation. I contracted the resort, the person who could handle this was off and they would get back later. Okay, I contacted them again weeks later, the response was they would refund the Vexilar charges but they are not going to credit me the fishing overage, any additional questions call the owner Chuck. So I called Chuck and let him know the story that we were never notified of an increase and due to the lack of notification we think we should be credited the amount. Chuck went on a rant about he is sick of these calls, he sold the resort and if I want my money back to sue him. We ended the phone call agreeing that he would check with the new owners to see what they wanted to do and he will call me back. No return call 10 days later so I called Chuck again. He checked with new owners and they own fourteen other resorts, industry standard does not require a notification of a price change. Also I did not have a reservation it was a quotation. I disagreed and gave him our reservation number and then he hung up on me. I contacted the lodge and they said he lost cell service, convenient. I let them know you can keep the Vexilar refund as they must need the money. I have met so many good people at fishing lodges in the last number of years. This is the first bad experience I have had and wanted to share. An owner telling me to sue him and hanging up on me. Wow! Life is too short, Chuck I hope you find a better place

THIS IS A FISHING LODGE, YOU COME HERE TO FISH!…read more This is a fishing lodge located on an Flag Island about 3 miles east of Angle Inlet, NW Angle MN. This location is the furthest point north in the contiguous USA , look it up. You are picked up by the resort staff at Angle Inlet and make then make the short 10 min trip out to the Island. Dan Schmidt may the trip special. He was unflappable, invariably courteous and helpful to any request we made, he never begins an answer with "we don't do that here"! The pricing for lodging and boat rental was competitive, it was separated out, you pay for what you use or need, nothing is tied up in a plan if you don''t want it. This is the fairest way to go! The cabin we stayed in was very nice, 3 bedrooms, large kitchen and eating area, and nice living room with patio doors and a large deck to sit on. It faced west so watching the sun go down was spectacular, Key West FL has nothing over this area of the world! What I found unusual was how well the cabins were kept up. So many resorts everything looks like a handyman built the property with the cheapest materials they could lay their hands, this was well constructed and would be nice even in the winter. Thew beds were firm, I'd guess new in the last 12 months, not the usual old lumpy mattresses that you feel like your back is broke in morning when you get up. Bath towels were normal human size, not postage stamp size and they were soft, not sandpaper rough like so many resorts. Our boat was great, had seen plenty of use but was good for the big water. I understand they will be getting new boats next year, I'm looking forward to that. The fishing was tremendous ..... somethings never change! Lake of the Woods, MN & Ontario is the best overall walleye muskie northern fishing in the USA. You can go a lot of place to fish but I'll go here over anyplace. There is no scenery like the Island areas on the lake and the big water areas will rival any sea or gulf for size, wait until you are out in 25 mph winds and you will understand how big this lake is. Bring a GPS this isn't a pond, this is the north woods!

They refused to put us into day shacks that were actually getting some keeper walleyes and didn't care about us at all. Their bait consisted of small crappie minnows, their shacks had no windows that opened or ventilation, and they were the dirtiest shacks I have ever seen. I have stayed at many resorts for ice fishing and this one is by far the worst ever. Stay far far away!!!

The Lodge rooms are warm, pretty spacious, and come with a freezer to store your catch. There's a pool and hot tub, which could be a little bit warmer, but not bad. You can everThe on premise cooking is hearty meat and potatoes stuff, and will keep you well fueled for a day on the water. (They offer an included meals plan, but by my math, not worth it unless you eat a LOT.) There's wifi, it's spotty and would not be enough for streaming, but you can check email. Their fishing guides will definitely get you to where the walleye are. We came back just one shy of the legal limit for a boat of six, and two anglers were kids who barely fished. Now, a few bads. First, the lodge rooms are comfy, but gosh those walls are thin. When the room above us was occupied, we heard every footstep, TV show, or discussion. Second, the property is really showing some age. The biggest sign is the microwave in the lobby, which trips the circuit breaker if you actually use it. But third, and this is where I think I'm just not their target market... the fishing charters are really designed for people who know exactly what they're doing. I'm not an experienced walleye angler, and I wanted to understand how to find the spots, where we were, what to watch for on the sonar, etc. Pretty much the guide service here is get driven to spot, get handed a rod, and jig in silence. I asked questions and learned a few things, but when you get two word answers, you learn not to ask too much. So all in all, not a bad place, and definitely an inexpensive option, but I might've gotten what I paid for.

We kind of blew threw the charms of that place in about 20 minutes, so that left us restless for a little adventure. We'd brought our passports just in case, not sure if we'd have time to trek up to the Northwest Angle. Yeah, we had pleennnnnty of time. Getting there is a major trip. Cross the border into Manitoba, cross the border again back into MN, and once you arrive in the Angle, you have to phone customs and let them know that you're there. You have to phone again to let them know that you're leaving. The first reporting booth was out of service, so we phoned in at Young's Bay Resort. And stopped in the bar for a beer. And that was about all we did in the Angle! Plenty of people were up there for the holiday weekend and seemed to be having a fine time. I think it may actually be cool to go back, by boat, across the Lake. But I think that's not really ever gonna happen.
