A buddy and I stayed here one night over the July 4 holiday of 2020. Got a room with two double…read morebeds that was a fairly good size. Our room had a fridge which was great to keep our beers cold that we had collected during our roadtrip. The hotel is near the train tracks but I didn't notice any noise overnight. The reason we picked this hotel was its location within walking distance to Lake of the Woods Brewing and "downtown" Warroad. Overal a decent hotel for our one night stay, being able to walk to the brewery bumped it up a star.

We stayed at the Can Am Inn in Warroad, MN - January 3rd through the 6th. We had a block of rooms…read morefor a hockey tournament with a rate of $110/night. I arrived on the 3rd and when I checked in, the manager confirmed my card and charged me for the room. I explained, at that time, that the coach would be checking in later and that he would be paying for his room, even though it was reserved with my card. She said that that was no problem at all. Twenty minutes later, I got a fraud alert notification from my credit card that a possible duplicate transaction had occurred. The hotel charged my card when the coach checked in, even though they had got his card at the time. I walked down to the front desk and was told "Oops! We will reverse it, but it will take 48 hours to come off your card." Not impressed that we JUST TALKED about it 20 minutes before and yet you still took his card, charged him for his room and then still charged my card? Seems like that was a purposeful oops. Another one of our parents called to cancel her room on January 1st. She had planned to go, but one of her friends passed and the funeral was scheduled for the 6th. When she called the hotel, she was told that she would still have to pay for all three nights, because "They are trying to run a business." The website states that, "Cancellations made less than 48 hours prior to the arrival date will incur a 100% charge." You would think that that would mean that she should have been able to cancel and not incur the charges, but it goes on to state, "If the room you are booking is labeled as non-refundable, non-cancellable or similar, all cancellations will incur a 100% charge, regardless of the date in which the cancellation is requested." I do not remember seeing that our rooms were "non-refundable, non-cancellable or similar" so I went back through my hotel confirmations and the confirmation email states, "our cancellation policy is 48 hours so please let us know if you cannot make it before then to avoid any cancellation charges." This parent was CLEARLY within the cancellation timeframe, so as not to incur charges, but the policy seems to only benefit the hotel and can be modified for their purposes. During our stay, housekeeping would make the beds, but not change sheets. The bedspreads smelled like sweat and body odor - pretty sure those are not washed between hockey weekends. The towels were changed out, but the washrags that were in the shower or on the sink were left. The room was never vacuumed. The "complimentary continental breakfast" is a cold breakfast (sugary cereal and stale bread/English muffins) - you are better off walking to the grocery store across the parking lot if you want a decent breakfast. We checked out on Sunday, January 6th and since I had another player staying in our room, that players parents paid for half of my room. I checked my account when I got home and I was still charged the full stay amount and there was not a pending credit. I called the hotel on the night of January 6th and the manager said that it would take 48 hours to show the transaction. I called again on January 8th and the girl working said that she could not find my reservation, even though I told her what room I was in and where the room was located in the hotel. She asked which team I was with and named the two teams that were staying at the hotel that weekend and I confirmed our team. She still could not find my stay and asked me if I was sure that I had stayed at the Can Am - umm, you just asked me what team I was with, I told you the room number, I have a charge from the Can Am, I am sure that I stayed there. I asked to have the manager call me as soon as she was in (was told 7 pm) and I never got a call. I called again the morning of January 9th and finally got the manager. I was told that she would need to call her credit card company and would call me right back. Five hours later, I received an email that a refund was initiated 9-Jan-2019 10:21:30 PST. The refund was not even requested until I had made several calls to inquire about it - 72 hours later and not the 48 hours that the manager likes to quote.

Arrived on a Friday just after noon. The staff was friendly and gave us a deal on minnows and we…read morewere escorted out to our sleeper. The video shows interior of a 2 person sleeper with beds down upon arrival. Was warm and holes were ready. Bedding was not clean (bodily fluids smeared on fitted sheet near garbage can) and garbage can had garbage in it (paper towels and a pop bottle). Consider bringing your own fitted sheets. Overnight winds caused bridge to be unstable and a vehicle had gone through 3am Saturday morning, and received a visit early Saturday morning telling us to shelter in place until someone physically came to tell us it was safe. No one stopped by or called to check on us until Sunday morning to plow us out. The outhouse was completely full by Saturday night and no one changed it out all weekend. Bring paper towels with you to cover the mound. Rented a generator but only had gas enough for 8 hours. Couldn't get back in to get more gas. Lucky to have brought enough water and snacks, including lots of beef jerky, to last us the weekend. Brought a jackery which came in handy to charge phones 2nd night. Word of advice that they didn't tell us, if renting a generator, bring a gas can and extension cord. Bring a power strip and extra power banks. If you have your own poop bucket, consider bringing it with plenty of bags and TP. Plan to be stranded for a few days, just in case of blizzard conditions. Shack we were in was very drafty with the high winds and there was a 2 inch gap above the door. The windows were also very drafty. We had two large bath towels with us and hung one over the window which helped a lot and stuffed the other in the gap above the door that helped. Then the propane fumes built up since there was no air vent. There was a small propane cooktop as seen in the video. The propane lights added warmth. Caught and kept 7 walleyes 15-16.5", one really small walleye was thrown back, and kept one nice size perch during the 2 days and 2 nights lines were down. Would have liked to make it in to eat at the bar but that never happened.

Walleye dinner was great however lots of little bones. Great homemade tar tar sauce. Salad was just…read moreromaine, 4 croutons, tiny bit of cheese. Wild rice soup was awesome! Service was good.

I am writing this about the restaurant only. I come here a couple times a year (spring and fall)…read morefor lunch and dinners for several years now. The menu has not changed in the years I have been coming here. They have a couple vegetarian options (grilled cheese on kids menu, cheese pizza) and no vegan options. The salad bar is lackluster; my vegetarian friend took one look and said "Uh no thanks" which was my thought too when I looked at it previously. The dining room and bar areas are nice and clean, bathrooms are clean and you can see into the kitchen which also looks clean. The food is good, not amazing. The service in the bar and dining room is great and friendly. The views are great from the bar and dining room looking at the Rainy River. They have a nice patio to enjoy when the weather and bugs are cooperating.

Full disclosure: I hate winter anyway but wanted to experience winter fishing at least once ! Our guides were always cheery and pleasant, even when they would have to keep replacing the many jigs we kept losing in the rocks. Shore luches were always a necessity. Dining room meals were always great, the portions hearty, and staff friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, fish are not guaranteed, but a great time is! Whenever I hear of someone headed to LOTW for fishing, I try to steer them to Ballard's. Fish on!
