Coming from Wellington, where you can't walk around the city without falling over an excellent Malaysian cafe, I was pretty shocked to find a dearth of them in Auckland. Fortunately for me, not long after I moved up, Angie's Kitchen opened up a convenient five minute walk away. Hooray!
Angie's is a typical unpretentious, cafe style place. It's scrupulously clean, good, but too brightly lit to give it any romantic feel, but who cares when the food is really good? Their roti, the test of any Malaysian place are near perfect: flaky and buttery and delicious. The mamak mee goreng is well balanced and never over cooked, and the nasi lemak also gets a thumbs up. Unlike lots of other places, they don't blanch if you ask for something to be cooked without a particular meat in it either.
Being situated on a street full of student apartments, it's also keenly priced: most mains are around $12 - $15. read more
