Complete with patio heaters and numerous large, wooden tables and benches, it is far from unusual to find the garden considerably more crowded than the actual pub itself, with punters often setting up camp in a spot outside. The staff are quite friendly and have somehow managed to get the task of serving in a busy pub down to an art form, despite the bar being modestly sized and a bit of a squeeze. If you're waiting to be served on a busy Saturday night, chances are you won't be waiting too long before you've got a drink in your hand. The interior itself is cozy with a combination of stones and wood accents everywhere. I spied a beautiful patio where the scenery has no obstructions. We, however decided to stay indoors and got a nice corner round table by the window next to the fireplace. Adding to the homey feel, the gentleman who took care of us was jovial and friendly throughout our wonderful lunch here. I started with the STILTON and PEPPER MUSHROOMS on a brioche bread. I was swayed to try this granted that this is an English cheese produced only in the UK, similar to blue cheese in strong smell and taste. What a superb dish! The FISH and CHIPS was also the best I had on this trip. Perfectly crisp batter on the outside and a flaky moist white fish inside, every criteria they nailed. Even the chips were just the right thickness with not a single one of them soggy. A very fitting last meal in Wales that was pleasant and memorable.

From car park you have to go over a little bridge which was overgrown and then walk around to the front, passing by an old picnic bench area, the smokers shed etc. Before finding the door in. It's part of the Marston's Inns and Taverns chain, so I am somewhat familiar with it. On this particular evening, the parking lot was packed. I don't know if it's usually this busy or it's the Cheese Festival that has dragged all these people to Caerphilly. Either way, walking in was pleasant. Lots of families with kids always makes me feel welcome. As an American, I know what a "bar" is and the sort of crowd that inhabit them. This was nothing like that. Most of the tables were filled and there was a warm conversational buzz about the place. I managed to find a table against the wall and perused the menu. It's the typical British (Welsh?) way of doing things, where you place your order at the bar with your table number and pay for it there, and when it's ready the staff bring it to your table. I opted to go with a beer I'd never heard of, Ringwood's Fortyniner (a bitter) and a safe bet of bangers and mash. The food was about ten minutes and while it had the right presentation, the flavor and texture were completely missing. The bangers ("sausages" in American) had no flavor, almost like they had been boiled. The carrots were mushy. The mashed potatoes were just bland. I wouldn't recommend this at all. When my meal was done, I left. After that, I just wasn't interested in hanging around or having another pint.

The bar is stocked with a good selection of beers, wines and spirits, and offers the ever-tempting option to double up your chosen shot when ordering a spirit with a mixer; which can often be the difference between a quiet night and a forgotten one. However, service can be a wait at times, with me regularly finding myself left staring at an empty glass for prolonged periods of time when the pub is busy. They also offer a solid food menu, with Wednesday being the resident Curry Night, Sunday boasting a traditional Sunday roast and the great deal of two courses for £4.25 from Monday to Saturday. Although, the standard of food varies from time to time, with a previous experience of Red Leicester chicken arriving minus the chicken, i.e. being served up a delicious helping of melted cheese. The one thing that felt a little odd was the music selection. It varied wildly, from Whitney Houston to Linkin Park, many of which were unusual selections for pubs.

While it may not look too flashy from the outside, The Moat is a really fun local pub. With a pool table, dart board and itbox (in addition to the aforementioned musical goldmine of a jukebox), there's lots to keep the average punter amused on a Friday night. Failing that, there are usually a good number of regulars happy to partake in some mid-pint banter while you prop up the bar. Another attractive feature is the menu. Serving food all day long, The Moat is part of many chain pubs under the Sizzler banner, specialising in fantastic pub grub. The food on offer is superb and, if steak was one of the seven deadly sins, then the sight of those bovine bad boys searing away on a skillet would be an immediate sentence to hell - they are that good. While there are regular quiz, curry and poker nights held throughout the week, my personal favourite night only arrives once a year. The Moat has established itself as the site of my yuletide celebrations for the past three years and, not counting a festive hangover, I always leave having had a great time. The atmosphere is enjoyable, the place is packed with familiar faces and spirits are high, as the whole pub celebrates the Christmas season with a drink in hand and a smile on their face.
