Whether it's the cheesy 80's classics that often ring out on a Saturday night or the summer allure of the huge beer garden at the rear of the venue, but the Cwrt House is easily one of the best nights out in the Caerphilly area. While it is far from Cardiff standard when it comes to a full night out, this is the place to go if you want a fun night of social drinking but are hoping to save on the pennies. The pub itself isn't anything special, but a summer evening will regularly lead a large portion of Caerphilly to congregate in the aforementioned beer garden. Complete with patio heaters and numerous large, wooden tables and benches, it is far from unusual to find the garden considerably more crowded than the actual pub itself, with punters often setting up camp in a spot outside. The staff are quite friendly and have somehow managed to get the task of serving in a busy pub down to an art form, despite the bar being modestly sized and a bit of a squeeze. If you're waiting to be served on a busy Saturday night, chances are you won't be waiting too long before you've got a drink in your hand. Situated in the upper part of Caerphilly town centre, there are a variety of other pubs in close proximity, which is ideal if you fancy a change of scenery after a few pints; although you'll have a hard time finding an social atmosphere as good as the Cwrt House.

Excellent pub outside of Carephilly. It was exactly what we were looking for. We travelled to…read moreCardiff for a Karate tournament and were staying nearby. It was an excellent tasty dinner in an old Welsh pub. The staff was super staff and cheerful. There was a great selection for dinner. Our order was traditional meals with steak pies, fish and chips, and burgers. My wife had scallops and sea base, and my son had salmon. We then loaded up on the desserts. I had the chocolate brownie with cotted vanilla ice cream. We left a big tip. They earned it.

The interior itself is cozy with a combination of stones and wood accents everywhere. I spied a beautiful patio where the scenery has no obstructions. We, however decided to stay indoors and got a nice corner round table by the window next to the fireplace. Adding to the homey feel, the gentleman who took care of us was jovial and friendly throughout our wonderful lunch here. I started with the STILTON and PEPPER MUSHROOMS on a brioche bread. I was swayed to try this granted that this is an English cheese produced only in the UK, similar to blue cheese in strong smell and taste. What a superb dish! The FISH and CHIPS was also the best I had on this trip. Perfectly crisp batter on the outside and a flaky moist white fish inside, every criteria they nailed. Even the chips were just the right thickness with not a single one of them soggy. A very fitting last meal in Wales that was pleasant and memorable.

Beer, good. Food, meh…read more Staying at the Travelodge across the roundabout, the Cwrt Rawlin was not going to escape my clutches for dinner. It's part of the Marston's Inns and Taverns chain, so I am somewhat familiar with it. On this particular evening, the parking lot was packed. I don't know if it's usually this busy or it's the Cheese Festival that has dragged all these people to Caerphilly. Either way, walking in was pleasant. Lots of families with kids always makes me feel welcome. As an American, I know what a "bar" is and the sort of crowd that inhabit them. This was nothing like that. Most of the tables were filled and there was a warm conversational buzz about the place. I managed to find a table against the wall and perused the menu. It's the typical British (Welsh?) way of doing things, where you place your order at the bar with your table number and pay for it there, and when it's ready the staff bring it to your table. I opted to go with a beer I'd never heard of, Ringwood's Fortyniner (a bitter) and a safe bet of bangers and mash. The food was about ten minutes and while it had the right presentation, the flavor and texture were completely missing. The bangers ("sausages" in American) had no flavor, almost like they had been boiled. The carrots were mushy. The mashed potatoes were just bland. I wouldn't recommend this at all. When my meal was done, I left. After that, I just wasn't interested in hanging around or having another pint.

For my close group of friends, the Cwrt Rawlin is a regular haunt that has provided the backdrop for many memorable nights over the years; be it birthdays, Christmas Eve celebrations or just a random local night out. The bar is stocked with a good selection of beers, wines and spirits, and offers the ever-tempting option to double up your chosen shot when ordering a spirit with a mixer; which can often be the difference between a quiet night and a forgotten one. However, service can be a wait at times, with me regularly finding myself left staring at an empty glass for prolonged periods of time when the pub is busy. They also offer a solid food menu, with Wednesday being the resident Curry Night, Sunday boasting a traditional Sunday roast and the great deal of two courses for £4.25 from Monday to Saturday. Although, the standard of food varies from time to time, with a previous experience of Red Leicester chicken arriving minus the chicken, i.e. being served up a delicious helping of melted cheese. Yum. Serving faux pas aside, this is a good pub to find yourself in on a Friday night.
