Lovely country setting & olde world style pub. Menu for food is superb but can be pricey. Very good pub quiz on Sunday nights.

Beer, good. Food, meh…read more Staying at the Travelodge across the roundabout, the Cwrt Rawlin was not going to escape my clutches for dinner. It's part of the Marston's Inns and Taverns chain, so I am somewhat familiar with it. On this particular evening, the parking lot was packed. I don't know if it's usually this busy or it's the Cheese Festival that has dragged all these people to Caerphilly. Either way, walking in was pleasant. Lots of families with kids always makes me feel welcome. As an American, I know what a "bar" is and the sort of crowd that inhabit them. This was nothing like that. Most of the tables were filled and there was a warm conversational buzz about the place. I managed to find a table against the wall and perused the menu. It's the typical British (Welsh?) way of doing things, where you place your order at the bar with your table number and pay for it there, and when it's ready the staff bring it to your table. I opted to go with a beer I'd never heard of, Ringwood's Fortyniner (a bitter) and a safe bet of bangers and mash. The food was about ten minutes and while it had the right presentation, the flavor and texture were completely missing. The bangers ("sausages" in American) had no flavor, almost like they had been boiled. The carrots were mushy. The mashed potatoes were just bland. I wouldn't recommend this at all. When my meal was done, I left. After that, I just wasn't interested in hanging around or having another pint.

For my close group of friends, the Cwrt Rawlin is a regular haunt that has provided the backdrop for many memorable nights over the years; be it birthdays, Christmas Eve celebrations or just a random local night out. The bar is stocked with a good selection of beers, wines and spirits, and offers the ever-tempting option to double up your chosen shot when ordering a spirit with a mixer; which can often be the difference between a quiet night and a forgotten one. However, service can be a wait at times, with me regularly finding myself left staring at an empty glass for prolonged periods of time when the pub is busy. They also offer a solid food menu, with Wednesday being the resident Curry Night, Sunday boasting a traditional Sunday roast and the great deal of two courses for £4.25 from Monday to Saturday. Although, the standard of food varies from time to time, with a previous experience of Red Leicester chicken arriving minus the chicken, i.e. being served up a delicious helping of melted cheese. Yum. Serving faux pas aside, this is a good pub to find yourself in on a Friday night.

I've become a fan of this pub, particularly since it got done up all sparkly a couple of years…read moreback. Even though it's relatively small it manages to have lots of different areas for big groups and small groups alike who may want a game of pool and to watch the football, or may want a quieter chat around the corner. It has its locals and regulars, but it certainly isn't adverse to newcomers, following the trend of many pubs that now place a lot of emphasis on encouraging families and friends to come and eat. The food is standard pub favourites, and is reasonably priced. The outdoor seating area in the summer can be a great place for a meal. Drinks prices are also fairly standard, with some cheap options if you take the time to ask. It can be busy on a match day so, depending on your preference, plan ahead.

Inside it was all re-done in 2007, though, so it's quite smart and up to date, and what was once a separate lounge, bar and pool room is now a spacious, open plan pub with a big bar, comfortable seating, a pool table, plasma TVs and an open fire. The two best things about the pub, however, are its beer garden (which has a decent view) and its friendly bar staff - it was short listed at the Publican Awards for Customer Service Pub of the Year in 2008/09. Being a Brains pub, there's a cheap food menu plus IPA on tap along with other Brains beers, plus Fosters, Strongbow cider and others. They have a special curry and pint night every Wednesday until 9.30pm which only costs £5.75 and is pretty popular, plus another deal on steak and a glass of wine for £7.99 on some weekday evenings. You can't expect gourmet food at these prices, but for a well-priced, filling pub meal it's not too bad.

The Moat House is definitely one of my favourite pubs in Caerphilly. Whether it's the cheap beer…read moreprices, the great food menu or the endless supply of classic rock on the jukebox, there are too many reasons why this pub normally finds itself on my weekend itinerary. While it may not look too flashy from the outside, The Moat is a really fun local pub. With a pool table, dart board and itbox (in addition to the aforementioned musical goldmine of a jukebox), there's lots to keep the average punter amused on a Friday night. Failing that, there are usually a good number of regulars happy to partake in some mid-pint banter while you prop up the bar. Another attractive feature is the menu. Serving food all day long, The Moat is part of many chain pubs under the Sizzler banner, specialising in fantastic pub grub. The food on offer is superb and, if steak was one of the seven deadly sins, then the sight of those bovine bad boys searing away on a skillet would be an immediate sentence to hell - they are that good. While there are regular quiz, curry and poker nights held throughout the week, my personal favourite night only arrives once a year. The Moat has established itself as the site of my yuletide celebrations for the past three years and, not counting a festive hangover, I always leave having had a great time. The atmosphere is enjoyable, the place is packed with familiar faces and spirits are high, as the whole pub celebrates the Christmas season with a drink in hand and a smile on their face.
