The pub building may be almost as old - it is thought to have been built as a substantial house in the 16th century, although it is not clear when it became a pub. Records show that in the 1650s the owner was allowed to mint his own tokens due to a shortage of coinage - usually a sign of a pub or other business. Anyway, it has now been a pub for at least 200 years, and feels like it: the stone-built exterior is fairly plain, with a low door giving on to a small, cosy room, with another room (with the bar) off to the right. The interiors are exactly what you would expect: flagstone floors, stone walls, traditional dark wood furniture, and low beamed ceilings. There is an attractive beer garden outside for use in the summer, as well. The pub is known for its real ale, and has three or four on at any time - usually local or interesting small breweries, which makes for a nice change. They serve food as well - roasts on Sundays, with a slightly more adventurous menu during the week. The food is fine, though not outstanding, but service was prompt and very friendly - as were the bar staff. On my visit, there was a roaring fire in the main dining area. The main downer is that it does get very busy, and is worth booking a table if you want to eat. The crowd a mixture of locals (coming to drink) and well-heeled Vale types coming to eat. There's no car parking at the pub, (the streets are far too narrow for that) but there is a municipal car park over the road, just behind the town hall.

This has got to be one of the oldest pubs in South Wales, it's medieval and dates from 1380. This is one of those places that reminds you how small we used to be - I'm only 5ft 7 and I stoop through the worn wooden doors. I havn't eaten here, but there is also a well respected restaurant upstairs offering a good selection of seafood dishes. Dishes include: Brixham Crab Cake with baby leaves and lemon butter sauce (£5.25); Plaice Goujons with paprika and a sweet red pepper tartar sauce (£4.95); Roasted Fillet of Hake with a chorizo and roasted red pepper risotto ith tomato, garlic and orange sauce for £13.95 For the vegetarians on the day I visited there was: Tomato Fondue, Wild Mushroom and Aubergine Bake, finished with garlic crumb and poached egg (£4.95) and Rosemary and Truffle Arancini Risotto with a tomato, red onion and spring onion salsa ( £4.95). The restaurant opening times are Monday to Saturday from 7pm to 9.30pm. They also offer bar meals between 12 and 2 pm Mondays to Saturdays and evening meals Monday to Friday from 6 to 8 pm.

It's a properly traditional pub, with low ceilings, old ornaments on the walls and a great tradiitonal menu. On summers days they also open up an outside area which serves burgers, bacon rolls and the like. The food here is always exemplary and well-priced and the staff are always super friendly. There's a lovely outdoor seating area which is a spacious, chilled out place to enjoy a sunny day. It's close proximity to Monknash beach also make it an ideal pit stop after a day by the seaside. I went in about two hours ago for a pint of Butty Bach, which is brewed in the Wye Valley. It's a fantastic, strong bitter and one I always have when visiting here. The odd celebrity has been spotted within these walls and it's not at all difficult to see why. In the local area, the Plough and Harrow is truly one of the finest traditional pubs.

Apparently, The Plough and Harrow was awarded the honour of being one of the ten best seaside pubs by The Guardian. It's not too hard to understand why. This is a traditional pub through and through. There's no loud music or slot machines to be found here. Instead there are open fires, delicious meaty aromas and that summery smell of spilt cider from the bar. The staff are exceptionally friendly and show a great amount of attention to detail. The food in The Plough and Harrow is delectable. Really. You know how everyone's favourite roast dinner is their own Mum's? Not anymore; the Plough wins out. So, in short, I agree with Gareth.

It's really well decked out inside. It's been refurbished but it has still kept that traditional, village pub feel which is so important in these types of places. It's also apparently haunted and many locals claim to have seen some spooky goings on here. They do one of the best Sunday lunches here aswell, with your standard choice of meats. Last time I checked that was £6.99 but that may well have changed. Really friendly bar staff here, and there's always good banter to be had with them and the regulars. It's one of those increasingly rare places these days where there's never any trouble, everyone seems to know each and get along, and there's an all round, homely relaxed vibe here. Now there's one way to deter the punters. But on returning to Llantwit, I understand that there are new owners in charge now. Apparently they've turned the place around. Once grotty, it's now a magnificent traditional country pub. In the public bar, you'll find three guest cask ales (Spitfire, Old Specked Hen and the sublime Timothy Taylor's Landlord were available on my visit) at £2.90 a pint or £4.60 for a pie and a pint. Such an old-style approach to bar snacks is further cemented with the large jars of pickled eggs, pickled onions and cockles behind the bar. I can't stand them, but it was heartening to see them in a pub. The low wood beam ceiling, the slate floor, the beery smell and the yellowing Bass clock, completed the scene of country pub precision. Only the sporadic jukebox bungled the show. One concession to modernity I was pleased to see was an It-Box with Monopoly on it. There's also a dart board for use here. On the other side of the bar you'll find a large lounge set up for diners that looked clean and well presented. There's a large and quite pretty beer garden to the rear as well as some tables out front, which overlook the historic square. With poker on Monday nights, a quiz on Thursdays, a disco on Saturday nights and live music on Sunday afternoons, there's always something going on in The Old White Hart. A cracking pub.

The clientele here encompass a range of ages, from jitterbugs to one lady who I overheard saying that she and her husband have been together 63 years (!!). I can't imagine living that long, much less upholding marriage vows to one person. The building that boasts The Old White Hart was built around 1440 (according to the website) and embodies the quintessential British pub persona with its low wood beam ceiling, traditional decor and expansive beer garden. With a range of beers, ales and ciders, The Old White Hart is a haven for imbibing locals, but its warm and familiar spirit is extended to everyone who passes through its doors.
