If you want amazing, friendly, and family like service then I recommend going there... my mom went to USC and would visit all the time so I had to try it for myself. This is the friendliest restaurant I have ever been to. Everyone is greeted when they walk in a custom started by the founder. His sons run the deli now and have continued the custom. They have a wide variety of sandwiches that are meaty and excellent tasting. The sandwiches are big enough to make your next meal in the day a small one. We approached Andy's for a quick bite (admittedly not checking the hours of operation) and found that they had closed 15 minutes ago, and owner was in the parking lot cleaning up trash. The Owner, Andy, passed away a year ago and his kids took over. They have bucked the trend and kept his standards while raising them when possible. The Andy's Special is my favorite with turkey, roast beef, swiss cheese and bacon crumbled on top. It is a nice warm sub that comes with a dipping sauce that puts it over the top. This is a classic place... a joint worth visiting, full of nostalgia. The sandwiches are really good. The Andy's Special is roast beef, turkey, and bacon on a warm soft bun. It's a large-ish sandwich so you won't feel cheated. You get a large amount of sauce, and OK I admit it's pretty much just Thousand Island dressing - but its good and it makes a nice combination though and I personally just think it's a great meal. I see a few reviews mentioning this as "Historic", etc. That is going to date me I suppose, since I have eaten here since it was new. My wife was a student at USC and lived in Columbia so we ate here a good bit. Andy is still there, although with grey hair, and still says "Hello My Dear" to all the female customers. I would have given it a 5 back in the day. Honestly the sandwiches are still just right for me, so the food is fine. I might give the place another star if Andy would replace those, "historic" tables and that "historic" carpet... but I suppose that's part of the ambiance of the place. This, in my book, is comfort food at it's best. If you are nearby and have not had an Andy's Special - you should stop by and try one. read more

In South Carolina to get away from the hurricane, we ventured to Columbia South Carolina. We'd been to the area last winter and so we knew it was a pretty good place to stay for a couple of days (or a week as it turned out)... Being in the mood for a pastrami sandwich, we of course checked Yelp for the best place to go. Many of the places listed in the area did not get great reviews, so our obvious choice was the place with the highest stars and Yelp did not disappoint. There is free private parking, which is difficult to find around there. And they take their customer parking only quite seriously! We ordered pastrami on rye and a turkey sandwich for the little ones. You'll feel like a regular by the end of your first visit. Love the family run feel to this charming local establishment, as well as the walls covered in photos and Gamecock memorabilia and the retro chair and table sets. I ate here for the first time this past summer, and now it's my Friday lunch routine. Meats are fresh and thinly sliced. My personal fave is the turkey dip special and I add saurkraut. We buy large containers of Andy's "special sauce" that comes with all the sandwiches and keep it in our fridge here at home. So good. Was on a mission to find a good old fashioned deli ( where they actually cook their own pastrami and corned beef). The Greeting was Awesome and the place really reminds me of deli's I had known in the past. Just moved here from Fl. Was looking for just the right combo. Owner was very nice. Came to Andys for the first time about two weeks ago and I walked inside and fell in love. You could just feel the decades of history in the walls and the whole ambiance flashed me back to memories I had growing up on Long Island with my dad taking me to various delis as a kid. I have been dining at Andy's since 1978, when I was a junior at Dreher. I would eat two Andy's Specials with extra sauce, because I had a metabolism at the time. Great sandwich shop, a favorite of students and locals since before I was a student at USC in the 1980s. Andy (the owner) was working the counter and taking the orders then, and he still is today. He still looks about the same so I guess his food is not only good but good for you! (And anti-aging! LOL) He always has a friendly smile and greeting for the guys "Hello my friend" and the girls "Hello my dear" regardless of your age! :) He even has the "my friend salad" and the "my dear salad" as menu items! :) I just had one of my two favorite sandwiches - the Rocket (pic attached) which is roast beef, ham and cheese served warm on a tender roll. Also like the Astronaut (turkey, ham and cheese) and I've been ordering the same sandwiches since the 1980s when I am in Columbia. The guy in front of me in line today was obviously a USC alum and was bringing his high school age son by to introduce him to Andy and saying "I hope he'll be seeing you next year"! He also thanked Andy for sponsoring his intramural team in 1980 when he was a student at USC! Andy is known for his support of the students in the USC community and it was nice to hear him get a nice thank you from all those years ago. I got the Andy's Special today and it's like I found a piece of my soul that I'd never realized had been missing for so long. Man, what a sandwich! To look at it on paper nothing stands out. It's just roast beef, turkey, cheese and bacon bits. That first bite tells a completely different story. The warm bread was most certainly an outstanding compliment to the right combination of such simple components. My wife has a thing for ice and said this is now her favorite ice ever. I agree, the way it's shaved seems to sort of compress between your teeth for a neat texture and experience. And the special sauce, which I'm guessing is a thousand island, was good. But I definitely did not need a full two scoops that I was given. Plopped right down on the plate in the middle of everything. Just sitting there in a pool. And I'm even an extra sauce kinda gal! Throw in some potato chips and a pickle and this is a full meal here. Not a healthy meal. But a hearty meal. I guess the pickle was my "vegetable"?? I was also excited to see cream soda as an option. I love me some cream soda, but was surprised to see it came with a Styrofoam cup full of shaved ice. I guess that's how they roll down here. The more time passes, the more I'm not sure just how good it was. I think because it had a bunch of delicious stuff piled inside with melty cheese it was delicious at that moment.
