Dr Andrew's is great! As a 30+ year old getting braces again, I was apprehensive. I'd like to start by saying that I had braces once before as a child, back in 1998-2001. I had them for a couple of years for severe crowding, and had a palate expander, as well. I was awful about wearing my retainers. I also got my wisdom teeth extracted a little too late (and they were severely impacted). Needless to say, these factors led to me needing orthodontic work again in my adult life. Fast forward to present day! Having heard nothing but wonderful things about Dr. Sara Andrew's orthodontic work, I decided to schedule a consultation with her. I had multiple consultations with various orthodontists, and Dr. Sara was by far an easy choice to make when I was ready to proceed. Her kind bedside manner surpassed any of the others I met with, and she really listened to all of my concerns about my teeth. She literally took the time to go through every option available that she felt would benefit me, was very honest, and listened to my input regarding what I felt the most comfortable with. Lauren, her treatment coordinator, was also extremely knowledgeable, and helped to answer my questions (both treatment-related and finance-related). I booked my 'start' appointment with her that same day. I was a definite candidate for Invisalign, but knowing my personality flaws, I know I would be awful with wearing my aligners all day long. I decided to go with Damon Clear. My teeth were only sore for the first week or so, and the Damon brackets are much more comfortable than the traditional braces I wore when I was younger (the glory of technology advances)! The Damon brackets are also a bit smaller and more aesthetically appealing than other braces that I've seen. I am so, so glad I chose Dr. Sara. As a single woman working a full-time job I had a pretty busy schedule when I decided to get some orthodontic work to fix some shifting teeth on my lower jaw. Dr Andrews is kind, thorough, detail-oriented, and efficient. Her team is friendly and welcoming, and always greeted me by name, even when I couldn't remember theirs. On my first visit, Dr Andrews listened and looked at my trouble spots and then recommended two plans to me, which differed in cost and speed. Lauren then sat down with me and went over all the numbers and answered all my questions, allowing me as much time as I needed to make a decision. On my second visit, the impressions for the Invisalign were done and this is the part I've always hated - having gone through braces/retainers twice as a child. But Eli was gentle and fast, and very apologetic when the first mold didn't turn out quite right and we had to do the darn thing again. Each following appointment was on time with Dr Andrews and fast, she had great tech to show me where my teeth should be in my treatment plan and made tweaks to make sure I stayed on track. The lack of weekend office hours weren't an issue as the team kept my check-ups to 15 mins long at 8:30am (so I could get to work on time). I consulted with 3 orthodontists and found Dr. Andrews to be the best for my daughter. I also learned during my research that she is the only boars certified orthodontist in San Carlos. I appreciated her advice to hold off on my older daughter getting braces until her adult teeth came in and closed the gap she had. Another orthodontist had recommended braces for her to close the gap. Her gap has since closed on its own, so Dr. Andrews saved me a lot of money with that recommendation! My younger child had a cross bite and her mouth needed expansion as well as straightening. After only 10 months of correction, there is already a dramatic difference. Dr. Andrews was very thorough in her explanation of not just straightening the teeth, but properly aligning the teeth and jaw so as my child got older, she would not need more invasive and difficult correction due to the pain from an improper alignment. I just finished treatment after about 3 years with Dr. Andrews. Dr. Andrews was my second orthodontist who treated me. I had been a client of another Orthodontist who treated me for 2 years of Invisalign. My previous treatment left me unhappy, because they had camouflaged my overbite by making my upper incisors slant inward to hide the overbite and overjet. This left me very unhappy with my smile. I started to google other options. I wondered if my overbite and jaw retrusion were significant enough to warrant jaw surgery. Dr. Andrews understood my goals, functional and cosmetic. Of all the doctors I needed to talk to for my surgery, she was the one I considered a thought partner who had my back. When I was unsure about a particular treatment, she stayed late at work for a phone call to talk me through how she would advise that we proceed. It was always "we" and not just me. I'm a nerd who wants to know everything: How does memory wire work? When did they start using it in braces? How do you know where to place the attachment on the tooth? She *loved* going into detail about each of these topics (and many more) and always invited my curiosity. When I was nervous about my oral surgery because I was afraid of how my jaw might look afterwards, she took me to her office and did some skeletal visualizations. She showed me my xrays, and drew angles all over it to show what is the normal range, and what is 1 or 2 standard deviations outside the normal range, and then how I compared on each. It was really fascinating (this was not my consultation btw it was way after, and she didn't charge me for anything extra) and it put me at ease about how the results of my oral surgery would be. I'm sure she went the extra mile because it also satisfied her own inner nerd. My treatment was extended for a few reasons, each my own fault. First, I had heard that she had a previous patient who did Invisalign first before doing braces in order to minimize time in braces. Even though the overall treatment time increased, I appreciated the option to be in braces for less time given my own life circumstances at the time. The second big reason was that I had my own scheduling woes with oral surgeons. It takes months to get consultations with them, and then months to schedule a procedure at a hospital. I should have started earlier with scheduling. I was convinced that no oral surgeon would write to my insurance company to get the procedure covered. The reason I went to UCSF is Dr. Andrews did a residency with them and thought I could get it covered. I am grateful that I took her advice, because insurance covered 98%. I do have to give a shout out to her medical staff and her office manager, Lauren. Lauren is always striving to provide excellent service. Scheduling is easy. Paying is easy. Requesting documents and records is easy. I visited a new dentist recently, and they requested my orthodontic records during my appointment. Within minutes Lauren sent everything over. I just wasn't expecting it to be that fast. Dr. Andrews was a bit more expensive than my other options by a few hundred dollars (for treatment that cost thousands of dollars). That being said, there were multiple changes along the way that I requested that caused treatment time to be drawn out, and Dr. Andrews never asked me to cover any additional costs. We had multiple rounds of revisions to really fine tune everything, and again no additional costs. Her office made my retainers afterwards, and again no additional costs. X-rays, photos, consultations, etc were all covered. My previous orthodontist would charge extra for anything. For instance, if I lost an invisalign tray, they would charge $250. One time I was wearing the same invisalign tray with Dr. Andrews for 4 weeks while waiting to transition to braces. She offered a new, clean invisalign tray for free. It feels like I got the better deal here. I am incredibly happy with the end result, and more than happy to send everyone I know to Dr. Andrews for treatment. I recently met Dr Sara at her practice in San Carlos. Her friendly receptionist greeted me and made me feel very welcome. Dr Sara gave me a tour of her brand new surgery. It has all the latest equipment and up to date techniques to treat dental patients. We had a fantastic experience with Dr. Andrews and her staff through our yearlong treatment plan. It was consistent all around - from initial appointment scheduling all the way through payment. At every step of the way we got treated well and with care. Our son, then a 8 year old, was quite apprehensive about the treatment and Dr. Andrews took the time to explain and reassure him. He was given time to decide and they even offered additional office visits to build his confidence. Once the treatment started, every visit was a delight. They continued to engage my son directly and built his confidence and engagement. He felt empowered and took on the ownership of following doctor's instructions on oral hygiene thereby wrapping up our treatment ahead of schedule. I've been Dr. Sara's patient for under a year now and have been thoroughly satisfied with my treatment and progress thus far. Before I met Dr. Sara, I had gone for several initial consultations with orthodontists to discuss the treatment plan right for me. While most of them had worthy credentials and experience, what separated Dr. Sara from the rest of them is that she really examines your condition and listens to you. Be it your prior experience with braces or your concerns or even a nagging issue, she listens and responds to each and every concern and/or question accurately and with empathy. That she has extraordinary credentials and experience only highlights how extremely competent and confident she is with her craft. Throughout the entire process and during our on-going appointments, she explains exactly what is going to be done and if you are really interested (like I am), she will also go in detail on why a certain procedure (replacement of wires, putting on elastic bands) is needed and what exactly it is going to correct. This has always put me at ease as I know exactly what to expect and what to look out for before my next appointment. She is very hands on and while she has a competent staff (both administrative and clinical), she always ensures that everything is done right and signs off every little procedure personally which I like. I know that there are a lot of orthodontists in San Francisco and the bay area and with it comes a plethora of choices to consider. Dr. Andrews is the only Board-Certified orthodontist in San Carlos, so I decided to book an evaluation with her for my daughter. I was truly impressed with her obvious breadth of knowledge and experience with an array of orthodontic issues.
