Have been seeming dr Capalbo for years now. I learned to call before i come here so I don't have to wait for hours before my exam. But even that you still wait for about 1.5 hrs. Today I was at the last room where I will finally be seeing by Dr. Capalbo. The nurse said just take everything off n keep the gown n she will be right with you. I have been waiting for 30 + minutes here and it's freezing with the paper gown in this room. So disappointing n I might have to look for a diff doc now. UPDATE - Call St. John's Riverside hospital that she's affiliated with. Ask to speak to the director of physician services or someone in that department. Tell them what's going on and they'll be able to share a contact number where you can reach Dr. Capalbo. She closed her practice permanently and her license will expire on September 1, 2020. You can check any diagnostics on BioReference's website but in terms of medical records she has it all in storage and can't access it now. I wouldn't try to request your medical records, it's not worth the effort. They send out letters in the mail about her practice closing but not everyone received. Find a new Gyno ASAP and get prescriptions refilled (I'm a patient as well and it took me a few days to finally reach her, she is very distraught about her practice closing due to financial restraints) read more

I hope everything is okay with her and her family of course, but it seems completely insane to me for there to be no way to get in touch with the office for issues with my medication. I've been visiting Dr. Capalbo for years. True, her office isn't modern, but her and her staff have done a great job at helping me take care of my lady parts. I conveniently work right around the corner, I make appointments, I come prepared, and I check my attitude at the door. I've had to wait for appointments here and there but now I rarely do since I call before heading there to see if she's backed up. Depending on what your issue is, they are really upfront with when/how they can squeeze you in. She really cares about her patients and is very detailed with her analysis. I was about to be between jobs (and insurance plans) and she offered help if I needed it (I didn't). I will take the occasional wait (which is not isolated to this doctor's office) for top-notch medical care. read more

It is definitely and older office but that doesn't tell you anything about the doctor. Arrived 25 mins before my appt because I assumed I had to filled out paperwork. The front desk was friendly. I was seen 10 mins after my scheduled appt. I was in a room for maybe 5 mins and had vitals done and then was told to get into a gown. A standard gyn visit is usually 15-20 mins because of the exam, so I always expect a wait at a gyn office. Met the doctor and she is amazing. She listened to all of my concerns and then went with the needed exam. She was very friendly and gentle. Highly recommend her! read more

I definitely agree with other reviews. This is a review of the front desk staff and wait time. I've been seeing Dr Andrea for 5 years. She's very professional and I feel bad for giving this place a 1 star. I have to be honest though. The front desk staff looks miserable everytime I come. They are unfriendly even over the phone. They make me wait on average an hour even with an appointment! I work 1 block away and I would appreciate it if they can call me ahead of time if they're running behind schedule. I've tried calling before. They would tell me to come in an hour after my scheduled time but I still have to wait another 30 mins! I don't understand why they over book their appointments and make people wait. I always feel like it's a waste of my time. The only reasons I come back because it's close to work and the doctor is nice. I'm actually looking for another doctor that takes my insurance. read more

Ok so the doctor herself is super nice and friendly, I have nothing against her as a physician. The practice, however, is run like crap. To begin with, the girl working the front desk must either hate her job or her life because I have yet to meet someone that greets people with less enthusiasm and personality. My experience with this practice was downhill from the moment she handed me that clipboard with a snarl on her face. I had my pap on a Wednesday and was expecting the office to call me with results by Friday. Monday afternoon came and went and still no call so I decided to ring them instead. I was told that someone will be making the calls from after 3pm Monday through Friday and that there was no way for me to get my results otherwise. I thought that was a bit odd since they are MY results but whatever. A week passes and still no call. I call back the following Monday and once again ask for results. This time I am told that my tests came back fine. I ask if they can have a copy of the results ready for me to pick up for my records by the afternoon and am told that is not possible and that I have to write a letter asking the doctor for the results. Are you kidding me? I can understand if I was asking for a fax but to walk in with my ID and not be able to pick them up? Ridiculous. Anyhow, I fax over a request on Wednesday afternoon (this is now two weeks from my original apt). Friday I get a call from the office informing me that they received my request and that they are mailing it to me along witha prescription for a bacterial infection. Well it is nice to know I have had an infection for the past two weeks and nobody has bothered to call and inform me. Had I not requested a copy of my record, would I have not found out ever? This is the most bizzare experience I have ever had with a doctor's office. Not to mention they screwed up the billing and charged me co-pay when they shouldn't have. read more

Dr. Capalbo saved my life. I went in for my annual check up. She "felt" something while doing my internal. She told me to go have a test done. I did and it turned out to be ovarian cancer. She is so sweet, caring, thorough and professional. Dr. Capalbo was so wonderful! She was patient, attentive, a good listener, she really took everything I was saying seriously, and she was so knowledgable and calm. I went in with a particular problem and she immediately had an idea AND a solution and explained it to me, made me feel so comfortable during the exam despite my nervousness, and took her time to confirm her idea. She explained things to the point of repeating them, which I really liked, and she has a really down-to-earth and comfortable way. I can't say enough nice things about her. I feel so much better about going to the gynecologist now! Also, the staff was really nice and helpful--the office is a little hard to find and one of the women generously came down to find me. I was very impressed with the whole operation. I'm not really sure where the negative reviews below are coming from, but I found everyone there kind and warm, and I'm fairly judgmental of people in general. Only negatives are that the office is dated and so looks a bit dirty, but the exam rooms themselves were fine. Also, the office was cold, but that's easily fixable. Dr. Capalbo seen me 60 mins after arrived 20 min late for my appointment. Have been going to her for the past 4 yrs now and the wait is getting worse each time. Last year I waited for 50 mins before I was seen by Dr. Capalbo and this year I called 10 mins before my appt and wanted to make sure that I DO NOT wait for morn than 20 mins this time. The front desk lady said yes everything is running on time. However, this is not the case at all. The front desk ppl don't really care about your time. Dr. Capalbo is the sweetest doctor and I really like her when I do get to see her. I just don't know how she can run a business that's constantly routinely continually to be like this. She is an excellent doctor but her staff were really awful. I often had to wait over an hour after my appointment time to be seen. Her staff told me to come in at 9am one time, and then gaslit me and told me the doctor wasn't coming until 10am. They were going to have me wait outside in the cold. I demanded to wait in the waiting room area. Her staff was terrible at customer service and had terrible bedside manner. I was about ready to book my annual appointment, and I found out her practice has closed down due to COVID. I hope her and her family are okay. I wouldn't wish that misfortune on anyone. I was surprised though at the lack of professionalism when closing down her office. I never received a notice that her practice was closing. Sure, the office is not pretty or modern (there's paint chipping on the walls, elevators in the building are questionable, outdated decor, etc.), but Andrea Capalbo is amazing! She is gentle, kind, and is willing to be so patient with you and answer your questions or address your concerns. I've never felt like she's rushed me out of the office, which is often rare in doctor's offices. I recently went in for an appointment at 10:30am on Tuesday. There were only two other patients already being seen. I went through ZocDoc so all I needed to do was complete a one-page sheet with my name, address, and insurance information - easy peasy. After about 10 minutes, I was called in. The nurse (I'm sorry, forgot her name) was nice. Waited another 20 minutes until Dr. Capalbo saw me, but nothing ridiculous in terms of wait time. The total appointment time took about an hour and I was back at work at 11:30am. I did not have a negative experience with the front desk, like some others. They're not the most bubbly or outgoing people in the world, but I don't necessarily need that type of personality when it comes to office management or reception. She greeted me, told me what I needed to fill out, about how long I needed to wait, and any follow-up items after the appointment, then said bye when I was leaving. Fine by me. read more

I've been a patient for over 10 years. 7 year ago I got very upset because I had to wait 1.5hrs to be seen, Dr. Capalbo was running behind on schedule. Then and there I decided to change practitioners (it was not the first time I had a long wait time). Over the course of 2 years I tried 2 different GYNs and came crawling back. The negative comments re the staff at this practice are based on utter bullshit - Andrea Capalbo is a compassionate angel - & sets the tone for her practice. Of course the staff are going to have quiet conversations with each other about some matters not pertaining to work - this hapens in every practice that I have ever been to. However the conversation is not loud & never inappropriate. I'll tell you what the real reason is for the negative commentary/reviews on this wall - most of the staff at Dr Capalbo's office are non white - & I betcha the folk making the negative comments re the staff are right wing racist bigots!! I went there three times and each time, I have to wait from 1 hour to 2 hours. Once, I'm gowned up, I have to wait more. It's frustrating how it takes her 10 mins to do all the examining but waiting to get inside to one of the the rooms takes over one hours. I feel like I am always getting OOP Quest Diagnostics bill when I try to only come in for an annual papsmear. I ended up getting a bill for $105 which I shouldn't be responsible for, but according to the lab, they said it was for additional HPV testing. Honestly, doctors should tell you when things aren't going to be covered by insurance. If that was the case, I would have declined it. I didn't get an option or choice to decline. read more

My first Yelp review - simply because of my experience. I agree with the other reviewers - Dr. Capalbo is the definition of professional. She is courteous, listens attentively to me, and answers my questions patiently. Her front office, however, is another story. I don't know why such a professional, kind doctor would hire such rude people. Every time I go in, the wait is longer than necessary and the staff barely acknowledges my presence. The worst was when I needed them to make a call for me to get an override on a prescription - in other words, DOING THEIR JOB - and they gave me such a hard time, saying how this is not something they do and they don't have time for this (yet whenever I visit the office, they're chatting away or doing something that is definitely not work-related). After some cajoling and begging, they finally did it, only to call me back a minute later and tell me that they are unable to get the override approved (suspicious...). I was then informed this will be the first and last time they will make a call for me and that was that. I understand the office can be busy and they have things to do but is it really necessary to give a patient such a hard time about a request that is part of their job? I understand their jobs may be hectic at times but please don't take it out on the patient. read more

I've used Dr. Capalbo for a few years, but have recently decided to change after my last few experiences. I agree with the other reviewers here, she is very nice and has a great manner, but the office is poorly run. Reception is very cold, but that's typical New York. My biggest concern is that they are too busy and/or disorganized and I felt as if during my 5-second exam I never had the doctor's full attention, nor did she give me a good explanation of various test results. I also had the experience where test results were never called in to me - even when I found out later a test was positive (during an ER visit). And what's with the side business of laser hair removal? I just lost all confidence that Dr. Capalbo was capable of identifying potential health problems. read more

Let me start off by saying that Dr. Capalbo is amazing: she's patient, informative, and knowledgeable, and she's the only reason I come back. The office management though, is AWFUL. 1. Each time I come to the office, regardless of the time I scheduled my appointment, I have to wait at least an hour. I waited once for TWO HOURS. What is the point of making an appointment?? No apology is ever offered, either. It's almost like they think this is normal. Well, if you are reading this, which you probably are not, it's not normal for someone to take off from work for a Dr.'s appointment and come back 4 hours later. Note: pack a lunch if you are planning on getting an exam here. 2. The waiting might be a bit more bearable if there was something to read. Unless you were pregnant last year, there is nothing of interest here for you. Would it kill to get one decent magazine subscription? I don't care about the May 2009 issue of Expecting Mother magazine, but thanks. 3. The office is in a state of deterioration that is inconceivable for a modern-day doctor's practice. Every time I'm waiting for the doctor to come in, I feel like I'm getting a back-alley abortion. There are brown water stains on the ceiling tiles, the walls have smudges on them, there is hardly any art on the walls, no water cooler, the place is just messy and everything is old and rickety and falling apart. I even saw a bucket and cleaning sponge IN the exam room. Sometimes, the pens don't even work. I wish I were lying, but sadly, I'm not. 4. The staff could not care less about you. I have called twice and left messages to get the results of my colpo back. They haven't called me back! Can you believe this? Here I am, stressing out, and they don't call. They send snail mail letters. They claim to have some sort of policy against calling, which is preposterous. They prefer to send a letter by mail, that could get lost or take up to 4 days to arrive, but they can't call you to tell you that your pap is abnormal and to come back asap? 5. They also don't call to remind you that it's time for a follow-up. I have never heard of a doctor's office that tells you that you absolutely must come back every 6 months for your health, and doesn't call to remind you. A dentist calls you every 6 months for a cleaning, but this gynecologists' office doesn't call you to remind you that you should come get your exam to keep an eye on potential cervical cancer! 6. They make you fill out a new patient form every time you come in. They don't remember you or care if you show up or not. On snow days, they don't bother to change their voicemail to say "We are closed due to the weather," You just have to assume that maybe they are closed since they aren't picking up the phone, or take your chances or something. Oh and if you say anything about it, the response is so passive-aggressive you end up feeling like YOU'RE expecting too much. read more

She was so incredibly friendly and took the time to talk with me and answer any questions. The front desk and nurses were all so friendly. I'm so happy I found her. I didn't have any issues with the wait but I could tell that Dr. Capalbo is not one rush patients and lets remember usually it's because us patients are running behind. Its a tiny, cramped office with unhappy front desk staff. They're making personal phone calls, talking about shoes & vacations. Professional. As a first time patient I waited about 20min in the waiting room, then another 30min in the room with my gown on. Fabolous. Its a shame because the doctor is really sweet & friendly. However, I was never asked for urine sample....or any other testing other than my yearly pap. Very odd. I have been going to her for 3 years and each year it's worse. Yesterday's visit topped the cake! The girl at the front desk is more concerned with her social phone calls then attending to reception. I waited an hour in the office while watching women walk out or reschedule due to the waiting time. Then I waited another 15 more minutes in the waiting room before walking out. Only when I was walking out did the doctor come out an apologize for being so behind. When I suggested that the front desk advise patience if she is running behind when they check in she agreed and yet it wasn't done. Dr. Capalbo is an outstanding doctor, what a relief to find someone in the big apple like her, she is caring, gentle and extremely helpful. Because having HMO Insurance means that you have to wait for your (pap smear) lab results at least two weeks and sometimes more than that, I was happy to hear from them as soon as they came in. I was referred to Dr. Capalbo by my primary care physician, Dr. Barry Grossman. He said every one he has sent to her has been extremely happy and I understand why. Dr. Capalbo makes you feel so comfortable and isn't "cold" or "sterile", which is how a lot of my past experiences with OB/GYNs have been. I had a medical issue where I had to switch between different birth control pills a few times and Dr. Capalbo and her staff were always patient and accommodating with my requests. The staff is friendly and efficient. I understand what other posters have said about the wait time. Sometimes you may wait a little while, but that is what you have to do if you want to see a great doctor! I usually try to schedule my appointment for a time that I know I am not in a rush. Quick Service. I am able to complete my entire visit during my lunch. The entire staff is personable and helpful in person and on the phone. Dr. Capalbo is in high demand because she is good at what she does and she gives you her undivided attention. Dr. Capalbo was informative, efficient, friendly and gentle. By far the best gyno I've visited. A lot of previous reviews include complaints about her administrative staff - I've had no issues so far. Both the doctor and assistant were very clear about what they were doing and why (i.e., PAP results run about two weeks, which you should know from any gyno unless they somehow have an in-house lab. I'm surprised by the reviews I'm seeing here, because I've had nothing but good experiences. Dr. Capalbo is kind and gentle, and she explains everything as she goes - something I've never seen before. In fact, in over a decade of pap smears, no other doctor has explained so much. She's amazing. NYC is a place where medical care is usually nothing more than a fast-food window. I don't mind if Dr. Capalbo runs late, because she takes the time she needs with me. The nurses are also kind and thoughtful. And the front desk staff are perfectly nice. I recently called to get a recommendation for a general physician because I've been unable to find someone who takes my insurance. I was worried that they would be rude and rush me off the phone, but the woman took the time to give me a name, phone number, location, and to tell me the doctor is very nice. What other doctor's office in the city has a staff that would take the time to do that? I will say that I had a negative experience with Dr. Stewart, who owns this practice. Since I'm reviewing Dr. Capalbo I won't take stars off, but I would warn people away from her. My experience with her fit in with what Bibi said below - she was all about money. I've been going to Doc Capalbo for over 10 years now. IMPORTANT: The reason they get 5 stars in my book is the lengths they go to in order to protect my health. I do not have insurance and got creamed when the economy tanked. They make sure that I get the care and medicines I need, dramatically reduce their fees, give me rebate cards for lab tests, and really hook me up emotionally so I don't feel like I'm one fluke away from being financially decimated by a medical bill...again. Sometimes I have to wait a bit, and the office isn't fancy...but THESE ARE THE GOOD GUYS. Their focus is womens' care...so please give them some slack if you have to wait a bit longer or aren't sitting in an Eames chair...SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS. Plus, I like the staff (so what if the front desk doesn't find your pap as exciting as you do, she's good at her job)...Nurses are friendly and Doctor Capalbo is super knowledgeable, informative, and just as important...approachable.
