This was our 2nd trip to the Big Island and this time we stayed on the Kona side. We had to come back to the Hilo side and visit this cafe. Archie and Marlene are the sweetest people you can ever meet. They are so warm and treat us like family. Everything was delicious from the Portuguese bean soup, Lilikoi glazed ham sandwich and spicy pork plate. The freshly baked walnut pie made by Marlene was the best! I would 1000% recommend this place. I look forward to visiting this cafe and this lovely couple. read more

Great place for authentic food and the owners host are so nice and welcoming. Highly recommend!

I want to high five the owners here, and give them a round of applause. Their food is home cooked; it's like stepping right into grandma's kitchen. As a matter of fact, the lady cooking assured us the recipe for the soup and one of the daily specials came from her grandmother. There are only a handful or so tables for eating inside, so if you come when busy you may wanna take it to go. The price is right, and the food is delicious. My mouth is watering just thinking about their turkey sandwich made with fresh made sweet bread, pineapple milkshake and soup. read more

This place is simply amazing. The best sandwiches (not burger) we've had in a long time made with Portuguese bread. And the service is brilliant. The owners are 4th and 5th generation, and they have a genuine care in ensuring their customers are looked after, and well fed. Reminds me of an old fashioned milk bar from the 70's/80's. The best food!!! I have soy, gluten and dairy allergy and the sweet owner of the restaurant who does all the cooking told me exactly what I could and could not have. I had the most amazing spicy pork with rice and salad with dressing to accommodate those allergies. Smells like my grandmas house.. my husband had beef stew with rice, salad and homemade amazing rolls, (not GF, but he loved them!) This restaurant is a GEM!! Wonderful food, friendly and fast service. We had an AMAZING meal of stew (hubby) and a giant, fresh Turkey sandwich on fluffy, thick Portuguese bread (me). The walnut pie was to DIE FOR and we even got to meet the sweet woman who made us the food! They shared the history of the Andrade building with us and she's the daughter of the original Andrade family, and this will be passed on to her children as well. My husband and I had a wonderful experience at Andrade Honoka'a Cafe. We were looking for a late morning cup of coffee and got there right at 11 o'clock when Marlene was unlocking the door. And not only was the coffee good, but she served us a slice of amazing homemade walnut pie, which I had never had before. It is her grandmother's recipe. We soon realized that we weren't just there for something to eat and drink. We had a wonderful chat with the owners Archie and Marlene and learned a lot about the history of Honoka'a. They are lovely people and take tremendous pride in their town as well as their restaurant. They are both Hawaii natives and Marlene was born and raised in Honoka'a. Highly recommend you stop in their café if you are in the neighborhood. read more

May I suggest the "Pork Sliders", and don't be fooled by "sliders" - this is a huge meal and it is delicious! If you're not into touristy places and you are looking for something that's down-to-earth, no frills, home style cooking, and reasonably priced, do not miss Andrades! Seriously, this was some of the best food I've had on the island! The braised ribs with pineapple are a must! You can tell it's taken hours to cook to perfection: so tender and so rich in flavor. This place is excellent to come to if you are REALLY hungry -- the portion sizes will not disappoint. The owners are absolutely adorable and so very sweet and wonderful to talk to. i have never had a bad meal here in 3 years and probably 12-15 visits. i have taken many guests here, who find the owners delightful and the food a pleasant treat. the offerings are not numerous, but i always find something that appeals to me, and the specials change daily, i suspect so that the owner/chef doesn't get bored. the owner chef is granddaughter of rose andrade, after who the town's rodeo ring is named. a true daughter of portugal (madeira and azores), she has lots of history to impart, and her irish husband waiter is a delight. the prices are surprisingly reasonable and the portugese sweet bread is wonderful. it's worth the trip to honokaa just to eat at andrade's no mater which side of north kohala you live on. read more

A little gem in Honoka'a. The kind of family owned and operated business that you are so happy to support. Lovely couple do all of the work and do it so very carefully, given covid distancing and sanitation requirements. They could not be more friendly, hard working, and hospitable if they tried! Many of the menu items have Portuguese influence since this is part of the couple's heritage. Seeing the Portuguese pork sliders arrive at your table is almost entertaining, as the bread is the thickest slice you may ever see. Some of the menu items come with the Portuguese bread and some with Hawaiian rolls. I tasted the bread and it has some nice flavors. My Pineapple Ribs meal was a very generous portion and quite delicious. The meat was perfectly tender and the flavors were wonderful. It comes with your choice of white or brown rice which was prepared perfectly, and a yummy slaw like salad - lettuce and cabbage with a really good, light dressing. The owner will make unsweetened iced tea from a bag of your choosing, and he timed the steep at 4minutes exactly. It was jasmine and it was perfect. Every diner there during our lunch exclaimed at the portion sizes and was very complimentary about whatever they had ordered. For those who care, the bathroom is spotless! This will be a mandatory meal every year! read more

This place was incredible - my girlfriend and I stopped in as it was the only restaurant still open when we were in town! The couple who own the place are so nice and have a real assortment of talents in the kitchen, as all the food and baked goods were incredible. I had the braised short rib with pineapple, salad, and rice, and my girlfriend had the massive pork "sliders," which came on giant, fresh baked, pillowy Hawaiian rolls. The Portuguese pork sliders and the beef stew was some of the tastiest food we had during our 10 day visit on the big island. The combination of fluffy sweet bread with slightly spicy, slightly vinegary, garlicky pork was divine. Side salad is a much needed and welcomed addition. They are absurdly friendly and exhibit the aloha spirit 100%. We didn't even get to try the egg tarts because the person who came in before us bought all of them - but those are apparently a must have. ALSO, Honokaa is such a great town to visit if you're going to Waipio Valley or elsewhere - it's really super cute and has some great views of the ocean. read more

Our group of five stopped here for lunch yesterday, and we're so glad we did! The cafe is run by a lovely and kind older couple, with generational ties to the locale. The food was plentiful, tasty, very reasonably priced, and obviously prepared with love. We wolfed down the "bifanas", Portuguese pork sliders marinated in wine, olive oil, chili, and garlic and served on huge sweetbread slices. Other hits with our group were the Portuguese bean soup, the homemade buns, the coconut milkshakes, and the Thai tea. One of us managed a big slice of warm walnut pie, with vanilla ice cream. The other sandwiches and desserts looked to be just as yummy, but we couldn't try them all... next time. We left so full, that all that we managed later was a very light supper! read more

This place is absolutely amazing. Small family shop offering Hawaiian-Portuguese fusion food and delicious pastries. We had the the local fish special which was incredible and the chicken pesto sandwich - it comes on Hawaiian sweet bread, with homemade pesto and roasted dark chicken meat.
