Ahhhh Farta Brutos...my first cod meal in Portugal. Wifey and I did a wine tasting last night and…read moreafterwards we decided to stop at Farta Brutos for dinner (we'd already walked by it 3-4 times. When we stopped to look at the menu the woman acting as hostess and server didn't use any English but convinced us to stop. FARTA BRUTOS, is a tiny place with a LOT of character that's been around for 113 years (as I mentioned above, our waitress spoke zero English so this was a little challenging at first). After our wine tasting I decided to have another taste of red from the Douro region (no, it doesn't really pair well with what I had, but I don't care). It's a crappy photo, but we had an appetizer plate (they're sneaky-they bring it to you THEN tell you if you don't want it they can take it away...we kept it). Olives (for Wifey) and a tuna mixture that didn't seem to have much more than olive oil and finely chopped onions - and it came with some Portuguese bread - I loved it. For our main meals, Wifey had a "fish rice" meal and I had a baked cod dish with potatoes and spinach that had enough garlic on it to keep the vampires away for the rest of the trip. Tinto - Quinta de Porrais, full bodied, 14%, €35. The couvert is bread and a yummy, sweetish tuna pâté. We shared 2 pratos: 1. Dourado de Português - whole fish in a tomato, pepper, onion sauce. Accompanied by potatoes. We picked that fish to death to get every last morsel. 2. Arroz de Pato - baked rice with duck meat pieces inside the cassoulet and sausage on top. Rich and crispy. The aroma was seductive. Dessert was an assortment of custard, orange and plum. Coffe and aguardente. + Excellent service from the owner. + Charming atmosphere. Traditional and soothing. _ Cloth napkins + Wi-Fi + Hefty flatware. €129
