a sign for an ancient hill winery

Don't miss this winery. It's spectacular in every way! This week I visited 7 wineries and Ancient Hill by far was my favourite. This boutique winery is operated by a husband & wife team offering the old world charms of European wineries. You can see the details in the shop/wine tasting room. I did the wine tasting and was pleasantly surprised from the products on this 15 acre vineyard. My last tasting but also from the first sip, I knew the 2016 Baco Noir was the winner. From talking to the wife, I was informed only 2 wineries in BC sell 100% Baco Noir: Ancient Hill and Summerhill Pyramid. I also appreciated the owner taking the time to explain their grapes are all grown on site and wines made on site with French oak barrels. After the tasting and my purchase, my family and I were welcomed to sit on the patio and enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the valley. So beautiful! With a purchase of a bottle or glass of wine from the shop, guests are able to bring their own picnics/snacks to enjoy the patio area. For those we don't wish to bring food, the shop offers a cheese and cracker platter to enjoy with their wines. I can't wait to return and bring other friends.

Loved, loved, loved this winery. We happened upon it when we had some time to kill while waiting at the airport. A quick taxi later...Voila!! It was the first winery that our newly 21-year-old had visited, we all four had wine tastings and settled on the Rose'. The patio was peaceful and relaxing. The staff were all very friendly. We couldn't have enjoyed it more, unless we could have stayed longer. We saw others who brought food to enjoy on the patio, some brought quite a spread. Next time that'll be us. We'll be back!

This is not the end. It is not the beginning of the end. It is the end...of the beginning. We traveled from Prince George, passed through Kamloops during Rib-Fest, and started our journey in Osoyoos. Seven days later, before checking from our hotel, my girlfriend had run up the tally. We had acquired 118 bottles from 59 wineries. I thought we were done, but she looked at me and declared we had to make it an even 60. She had selected the one to visit. Ancient Hill Winery, which was on our way out of town. We had checked out and started our return home, deaviating to hit up Ancient Hill, one of the most stunning, breathtakingly beautiful wineries in Kelowna. It's not a castle or lakeside villa. It's just a winery. No restaurant, no merchandise just great wine in a striking location blending Celtic and Dutch aesthetics into a cohesive package. Reaching Ancient Hill Winery is a bit of a challenge though given that Google Maps will confuse you. When it claims you've reached the destination, you must continue down the road before reaching the entrance. Don't get discouraged and turn around; it will be worth it. The gardens and view from Ancient Hill are nearly unmatched, and they have tables open for a picnic as well. The winery itself is a rustic collection of natural wood, etched glass, and fake produce. The tasting bar sits atop of wine barrels and under aged chandeliers. It dominates the floor as it should. This is a winery, foremost over other concerns. It's not an environment conducive for distracting children. There is too much in Ancient Hills that is fragile; this is an adult playground. The wines themselves are amazing and affordable. The Lazerus (not spelled wrong) is only $15, their Pinot Noir only $17, and they are good. Their distinctive Baco Noir I've seen nowhere else, and despite assumptions, does not taste like bacon (swing and a miss). In total, they offer six wines, and not one comes up short. We bought bottles on our first trip, making it an even 120 for that journey, and loved the experience so much that ten months later, when we guided our friends on a similar yet MUCH shorter wine tour only a few weeks ago, Ancient Hills was one of the few repeat visits. We loaded up again and are still sitting on two Rosés (2014, and 2015) and a 2012 Lazarus. My girlfriend absolutely adores Ancient Hill, and I can see why. It oozes personality like an open mayonnaise jar left out in the sun. That's right; I could not have gone throughout this entire review without making at least one Dutch joke. My friend is Dutch so I couldn't help myself. Ultimately, Ancient Hill was proof that we hadn't gotten tired of wineries after so many visited, that true viticulture aficionados can still find stimulation after the fiftieth, hundredth, and thousandth winery visited. It's what spurned us for our second trip the following year, why we plan a third in time again. Ancient Hill is why people visit wineries, as a reminder of why they exist.

THE BLACK AND WHITE: This was our second to last winery before we called it quits for the night. We came in wanting to try some more okanagan pinot noirs and we got them! They gave us a sparkling pet nat to try as we were walking in which was nice. The pinot noirs here in the classic tasting were alright. One was very light and the other was heavy and leathery. For bonus pours, we tried their late harvest riesling which had that petrol taste profile that I weirdly like. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Great staff and service, however the wines were alright. A tasting was $10 for four pours. Very affordable and would recommend to try at least once.

We dropped in on a Friday evening with 6:30pm reservations. There's a heritage room and a couple small tables outside to do tastings. We did ours in the latter. Service was incredibly friendly and sweet. Tasting fee varies ($10.00 to $20.00) based on four flight options but each includes three pours. We opted for the classic ($10.00). It's also worth mentioning that only $5.00 of the fee goes toward a bottle purchase. - 2017 Organic old vines pinot - a blend that was light in flavour. - 2016 Old vines riesling - 2018 Organic pinot noir - smokey and medium tannin. - 2020 Organic ruby pet nat - we were given a bonus sample. This was actually one of their natural wines we were hoping to try. Turned out to be our favourite. A touch fizzy and notes of blueberry. We debated getting a bottle ($30.00). Decent wines at SV but we enjoyed the organic wines more out in West Kelowna.

Parking is weird as you have to park next to the building but there's no dedicated parking spaces. THE BLACK AND WHITE: Driving up, it was weird not having a place to park the car, so we just parked at the side of the building. The dogs are nice and playful around the property. Heading into the winery, we had these cute lil wine glasses and the tastings were 5 pours. There were a few grapes that I didn't recognize like the Siegerrebe, but was actually pretty decent. The pinot noir and bubbly was great. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall the damage done for 2 tastings was $20 CAD. Lots of experimentation here and I'm onboard for it.

The Woops wine label is designed upside down, which is really fun, and it tastes great too. Phoenix was full-bodied and tasted really good. I also liked the Gewurztraminer for its well-balanced fruit flavors and sweetness, and the Wolf Song for its buttery taste. We also purchased their original wine glass. This winery is really fun, and I will definitely visit again.
