They could not have been more curmudgeonly and unwelcoming, waiting to hasten us on our way, with the servers failing even to wish us a Happy New Year. The place was practically empty, the food indifferent and the wait staff sulky. The two young women who looked in on us had faces like thunder, so much so we felt like apologising for turning up to have dinner. They couldn't wait to get rid of us and we left at 11, knowing it was better to be somewhere they actually wanted guests. The pub management should look into why their staff's morale is so bad they vent their temper on diners.

It is positioned at the end of a lone terrace of Victorian cottages - surrounded by a never ending development of high rise blocks. The Pilot attracts a captive audience of office workers and labourers from the surrounding sites. Mind you, it could hold its own even compared to more competitively located pubs. They have an impressive choice of beers, and not just white wine for the ladies (sorry, couldn't resist). The pub has been done up carefully to appeal to diners without losing the feel of a real pub. The beer garden is nonedescript in its design, and the sight of half finished appartment blocks is just depressing, but it is still lovely to be able to sit outside on a summer's evening. The food menu is somewhat predictable and we almost ordered fish and chips when the waitress read us the list of daily specials. The duck breast served with sweet potato gnocchi was impossible to resist, and we were not disappointed. I later saw the description on a board by the bar, and apparently the stringy bits in the sauce were meant to be chicoree - not quite up to restaurant standard, but overcooked sauce is forgivable in a pub (the duck was cooked perfectly and still pink inside). It's just that little bit too far to be the obvious choice for O2 visitors, but well worth the effort.

The establishment has a nice mixture of cozy and airy, which was perfect for a lazy(ish) Sunday. I hate to use this word, but I'll use it anyway (because I can't think of a better descriptor): the service here is "super" friendly, and very knowledgeable, particularly regarding the ales on tap. The barkeep gave us a few sample pours without waiting for us to ask, which we greatly appreciated. Because of that, we were more than happy with the pints we ordered. Moving on to the food: the roasts were delicious, in particular the pork loin, which was moist and flavorful. I enjoyed my roast beef as well. The Yorkshire pudding was wonderful and I might have been just as happy eating that alone for my meal, to be honest. The pub is in walking distance of the touristy areas of Greenwich, so it's easy enough to put some good food in your belly and continue on to your sightseeing, afterward.

But the weather was comfortably cool and dry-ish, the view cloudy but still fantastic, and the food excellent. I had the venison, apple, and leek sausages... this being near the end of our trip, I wanted to keep it traditional. Plus I'm pretty sure you just can't find this stateside; crisp exterior, full-on savory interior, atop a hearty waxy potato mash. Very simple, very good; no regrets. No regrets on the treacle tart either, which to be honest I wasn't sure exactly _what_ it was, but realized one bite in that it's a whole lot of golden syrup. Which isn't something I can't really find at home either, and is probably one of my favorite flavors in sweet food. I liked it so much, I swore to figure out how to make one when I got back (which I will do, as soon as we're through all the Christmas cookies.) It's not that far a walk down the Thames, but definitely worth it.

The rear section of the pub is more of a restaurant - part of which is under a canopy (bit chilly in the winter). Food is probably above your usual pub grub - with a variety of specials. At the back there is a garden/patio - a petition to Greenwich Council to open it up for customer use has been sitting on the bar for some months. As for entertainment, think recorded music, some live music from time to time, and a TV screen in one corner, plus pub quizes.

It's not the smartest pub in the area, but the staff are friendly enough and it can be a useful stop-off if you're going to the retail park (Sainsbury's, Comet, B&Q) - all about five minutes away. For football fans going to The Valley, Charlton, it's about a 10-15 minute walk. Smokers can shelter behind (appropriately enough) some smoked glass screens outside, where there are some benches giving a good view of the constantly passing cars and buses.

They had a big screen especially set up for the tournament and an in house horn section blasting some upbeat terrace songs to rally our spirits. They even played 'Tequila', but gin is more of this pubs specialty with a rather impressive gin menu on each table. There is also a fine selection of real ales up for grabs. It looks like they have many fun nights planned too, with regular music and comedy nights coming up. Usually they serve food, although this wasn't on offer during the football game so I can't comment on this. The pub is spacious, and there's a little garden at the back, Friendly staff make this pub ripe for a second visit and a good spot for a summer time tipple if you are in SE7.

How is this possible? For my last night in England, I was going to have bangers 'n mash so onto Yelp I came to find the next closest pub. We ended up coming to the Pelton Arms and I was heartbroken to find that they didn't have it on their menu either. What the %#$@? The waitress quickly checked with the chef and thankfully, since he had all the ingredients, he was willing to prepare the dish for me! I'm so grateful that she took the initiative because those were some of the best bangers I've had. They were served over a wonderful green onion mash and topped with the typical grilled onion chutney. Absolutely fantastic and they definitely hit the spot! My husband opted for the special of the day, Chilli Con Carne which was incredibly spicy but I always love to see a grown man cry. It wasn't a crazy heat but a wonderful, flavourful warmth with a kick that hit you a little later on... almost as if it was an afterthought.
