Formerly known as Zecchino's and now Metcalf's, the sandwich quality was as excellent this week as it was 25+ years ago. Keeping a winning formula over time is not easy to accomplish, so this tells you something about the sandwich tradition that has been established. Service was a bit on the slow side, but once the sandwiches came my niece, nephew, and I were very happy (I got many great uncle points for going here). We didn't order anything adventurous, just basic meat and cheese variations, but the bread was terrific, veggie toppings fine, the oil and vinegar splashed just right, and all was right in the world. We walked a couple of minutes with our sandwiches to find a riverside picnic table in the charming village of Damariscotta. I was very happy to make a long overdue return visit and also, counter to what another reviewer said about COVID safety, the staff all had masks on and social distancing was enforced via orders placed outside on the deck. Nashville Hot is good -- tastes right, has a kick. We'd call it mild at Hattie B's and it would be just batter standard (no spice) at Prince's. It's their second hottest sauce and was enjoyable without being painful. Alabama White was also good, a bit sweeter than home but very tasty. A good follow up to the Nashville Hot!
