Basement Galley started off as a supper club at the basement of Tom Fothergill, and his flatmate,…read moreChef Alex Cooper's house. From there they moved on to a more unique approach, wanting more privacy in their house and got permission to create a fine dining experience in an old abandoned Victoria line underground train. The underground supper club is now taking place at the Pump Museum near St James Station Walthamstow where a 4 course dinner is served with a cocktail on arrival, a choice of a full bottle of red or white wine during the course of the meal and finishing the dinner with a glass of champagne. The menu changes monthly but they usually update it on their website if you want to know ahead. I was almost at doubt I was even on the right path when I was making my way to this supper club. The surroundings varied from residential to industrial with little signs that a cool establishment could exist anywhere nearby. But search in Basement Galley on Google and have it pinned am I assure you will find it okay. Staff were incredibly friendly and although the arrival time said 19:00, many arrived early to enjoy their cocktail. As soon as you see the train it almost immediately puts you in awe at how they managed to convert the carriage into a restaurant and make it look so fancy with the lanterns and candles lined with cutlery and wine glasses whilst giving you nostalgic memories of cramp busy journeys on the underground. It's a completely polar opposite feeling. Heritage tomatoes, bufalo, olive, Parmesan and thyme The title of the dish does not justify the creativity that went into it. Lovely array of different tomatoes adding vibrancy and colour to the dish and I thought it was very clever of them to use minced olives to season to the dish, adding complexity to its flavour as well as an interesting texture. The buffalo cheese was incredibly fresh and bouncy and balanced out the salty olives perfectly. Thyme adding another dimension of flavour whilst the Parmesan crumb added a lovely crunch and umami Green asparagus, ricotta & green pea, spiced cashews Slightly on the salty side but that could be because of the overly spiced and seasoned cashews which therefore was forgiven as they were lovely and well spiced. I loved the various of textures coming together in each bite from the crunchy mangetout, soft green peas and the lovely refreshing puréed asparagus and ricotta helping bind everything together. Cashews added that extra boost of flavour with its spice but also a subtle sweetness from its natural flavours. Finished nicely with Parmesan for a richer flavour and umami Red quinoa and wild rice, herb, duck, fennel Unfortunately the duck being the main deal was very tough, chewy and fibrous. Quite an effort to eat but luckily it was juicy and packed full of flavour which made it worthwhile. Wild rice and quinoa added a wholesome touch with its crunchy and soft texture and finished nicely with mashed fennel to balance out that textures with its light creaminess. Strawberry and cream, dark chocolate and baileys, amaretti Such extravagant flavours for such a simple looking dessert. The dark chocolate tart was obviously made from a high quality chocolate seeing how rich and smooth the texture was with lovely strong notes of baileys giving it lovely hint of bitterness and coffee aromas. Strawberries were fresh and sweet and helped lighten the thickness of the chocolate tart whilst the ice cream helped accentuate the velvety texture further with its creaminess I seriously did not expect such original and creative dishes and such high quality of food especially when no kitchen was in site and we were in the middle of no where on an abandoned train. Staff were informative and friendly which added to the charm of the evening. Portions aren't exactly big but leaves you satisfied and just about full. You do feel you are drinking more than eating but all the drinks were also excellent in quality and a great choice. It's definitely not a dinner you would forget and a great gift to those who like trains and unique food experiences. I absolutely loved it

We were greeted warmly and they usefully took our coats to hang up on wall hooks. We were with a couple who don't live far, who'd warned us the head waiter walking around was actually the owner, and had shown some typically French (abrupt!) service when they'd been before, sighing when they'd taken longer than 10 seconds to choose wine. I actually didn't mind his matter-of-fact style - he made sure we always had everything we needed and we had plenty to chat about with each other on this occasion rather than make small talk with him! We got through 2 bottles of a well-priced Pinot Noir with dinner, and took the locals' suggestion of a sharing platter of starters which was great for a craver of variety like me. Between the 4 of us I think we all had different favourites from the salami slices to the prawns to the pate to the stuffed tomatoes - so everything got finished. I liked that they served the big platter on a raised stand too - a nice touch so we could all get involved. We all chose steaks for main (FOMO much?!) - I went for the steak frites which was a 225g flat iron that arrived perfectly medium rare as requested and I really enjoyed. I think my guy was less impressed with the rib eye so take note! The only part of the interior that wasn't as pleasant as the rest was the toilet - perfectly clean, lovely moisturiser etc but just absolutely freezing! I suppose it hurries you up... I saw plenty of other things on the very reasonably-priced menu that I'd love to have ordered too, so I'd be quite happy coming back if I was in the area - as it looks like plenty of the locals do!

I started with the Camembert Frit (Camembert cheese coated in breadcrumbs, fried, and served with redcurrant and raspberry coulis). This was delicious! The cheese paired so well with the raspberry coulis and it was no greasy at all (perfectly fried). For my main course, I got the Steak d'Agneau au Romarin Grilled lamb steak with red wine & rosemary sauce (served with sautéed potatoes). This was delicious as well! The lamb steak was so tender and flavorful and the sauce went so well with it. The potatoes also went very well with the lamb. I have also had their Filets de Cabillaud Rôti (baked cod fillets with sun-dried tomato and cream sauce), served with leek and potato mash. This was excellent! The cod was so fresh and the sauce was to-die-for! I could have licked all of the sauce off of my plate (if it were socially acceptable haha). The sauce was so fresh and paired so well with the fish. The potato mash was also fantastic--perfect texture. For dessert, I had a rhubarb tart. This was delicious! I loved how the tart wasn't too sweet and I could really taste the rhubarb. The service was also excellent. The servers and managers were very attentive and considerate of my husband's allergies. They were super accommodating, which is the reason we came back again! The have a great price for their prixe fixe menu. I would definitely recommend this restaurant! In a nut shell, great service, excellent food, fair prices and great ambience!

And after reading the other reviews I am aware of this being a chain restaurant, but as an outsider, it is new to me, chain or not. We walked in around noon and had no problem getting a table as the place was nearly empty. We were promptly seated and the wait staff started buzzing about. Our drink orders were at the table within minutes and our orders were placed. I decided that a burger was the best for me, I wanted to eat with my hands and to me this was the best option. Six ounces of black Angus beef on a toasted brioche bun. My friend and I both decided to add the fried free-range egg to our burgers. To choose between a house salad or frites as the side, there is no other logically combination to me than to get frites with a burger. Why would you want a salad? You already got the leafy greens on the burger and without stating the obvious, it's a burger. That salad isn't going to make this choice any more healthy than it isn't. This burger was on the big side. I had to cut it in half to be able to hold it. The first bite I took I had juices running down my hands. Was I embarrassed by this? Not at all, in fact it was like a compliment to the kitchen staff. Did I look like a slob eating this? Probably, I missed breakfast, been on a plane for hours and was stuffing my face. The frites were on point. Crispy and being served with mayo and ketchup, I didn't have to ask for anything extra. After we both devoured our burgers they came promptly to ask if we wanted dessert. I passed as the burger and frites were enough for me. However, my friend went for dessert. She had what I believe they called the hummingbird cake and a cappuccino. Both looked amazing and made me wish that I had left room for dessert. Staff were polite and accommodating and a bit boisterous. Made for a quick lunch.
