We arrived in Dalston and had some time to spare before meeting up with friends. We spotted the…read moreHidden Cave & Garden Restaurant because it looks really welcoming and certainly stands out from the establishments around it. I had the Hidden Cave Pasta which was a creamy pesto sauce with cherry tomatoes and haloumi. It was delicious. My partner had the Sautéed Mixed Seafood which was a very large plate of calamari, mussels prawns and salmon, served with vegetables and rice with a white wine, garlic and lemon juice sauce. In his own words, it was "outstanding". Our friends shared a selection of meze platters and starters which seemed to have very generous portions. The service was really good and both the waitress and manager helpful, efficient and fast. We were impressed with the prices (most main courses n the £7 to £12 range) and although we live nowhere near the area, we'd consider travelling back just for this restaurant. We were surprised to find that the restaurant is only newly opened and only discovered this when we tried to check in and couldn't find it. They seem to be off to a great start, with many tables filled and none of the teething problems you might expect from a newly opened place. The final touch on our meal was a complimentary vodka and blackcurrant cocktail. A lovely touch to a fabulous evening.

The sucuk and halloumi panino wasn't outstanding but for £3 I was completed satisfied! The server was also so sweet and helpful. I would definitely recommend this for lunch in the area. They have outdoor seating and lots of space inside so it's good for groups too. There are several extensive menus so if you're feeling indecisive leave some extra time!

The Woodoven BBQ in South Woodford…read more If you want a relaxing meal outside of the hustle and bustle of the city of London, the Woodoven is the spot! Awesome atmosphere and friendly faces always gets my attention and dollar! Didn't know if it was going to be a typical BBQ spot or a place with an awesome flavor! I started with the bread and humus! Delicious! Humus; creamy with a cucumber and pickle flavor. Next I had an awesome bowl of "Garlic mushrooms", grilled and sauteed with an awesome savory taste! I will never forget! My final dish is the calzon with Italian sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, cheese and green peppers! It's probably too much food, but there's always takeout! Just know that you get Big bang for your buck! I chased it down with bottled water and a glass of rose wine! With love, Chef ElJai'

There is now another restaurant also called Wood Oven on George lane, closer to the station; same owners maybe, but a different, more upmarket looking vibe. The ambient is informal and noisy in a good, cheerful way; perhaps not the place for an intimate meal, but if you want to enjoy a lively evening you're in the right place. They don't take reservations, but the restaurant have enough seats so the turnover is quick and you won't have to wait ages. In the winter, avoid if possible the tables next to the door to the loos (by the way loos are located outside, at the back) to avoid drafts from people who were born in a barn and leave it wide open. All the ingredients are fresh, and the meat is cooked to perfection, never dry or overcooked. I often get falafel for starters, nice texture and really tasty. I love the lamb shish; I even managed to convert my mother who said she didn't like lamb. Do try the Wood Oven Special if you aren't sure of what to order; it combines lamb and chicken shish, kofta, lamb chops/ribs, chicken wings, rice and salad and serves (well) two people. The rice deserves special mention, SO fluffy and flavoursome. Staff is lovely, smiley and accommodating. Once we were politely asked if we could change tables in order to allow a family to combine two tables and sit together; we happily obliged and got a free extra dish as a treat. Sweet.
