I was told correctly by one of the nice ladies to go to his window after completing a Smog check on a registration I had already paid. He could not handle that as a government worker that someone would come in with their paperwork and tasks correctly done and go straight to his line. To say he was perturbed is to put it lightly. All is good though I had some E-mails to write and I made a phone call. Went back to Ramos's line after a short wait and proceeded to call him sweetheart the entire time, which enraged him. I don't know the problems Ramos has, but he appears to be one of those people that even the family dog hates. Ramos is a miserable person I hope at least his Wife's boyfriend is nice to the kids and dog, because I know Ramos isn't.

I can't say the same for the other 3 agents I encountered on the same day. Overall the process went quickly. I was in and out in under 30 minutes which is almost unheard of for my history with DMV. But I had read that if you have a police incident #, they will waive the fees. Not true. The good news is they have plenty of computers where you can submit your application online while you're there's. The application is only just a few questions. The bad news is they do not give you a wait number until you come back to the line which I think is unfair because you don't get to come right up to the counter to get a number. My experience was turned from bad to great by the staff named Gerardo. He started with a friendly smile and a "good morning" unlike the other two staff that greeted you if you could even call it a "greeting." He turned my experience to a positive one. The process once you actually get started is not bad. I had no appointment and got there at 830a and left after about an hour.

If you need to accomplish a simple vehicle registration, go here. In less than ten minutes you can register your car (or accomplish one of a couple dozen simple, standard DMV tasks like change of address) and be on your way. They do charge an additional $20 for the service, but it is more than worth it to avoid the local DMV. Because they are located at the NEX Autoport and service almost solely military clients, they already have the California state tax exemption forms handy. Instead of the exorbitant registration renewal fee (which for my SUV was going to be just shy of five hundred), I only paid $86 (plus the $20 fee). AAA can't even do that for you. The drawbacks? It will take about a week and a half for your new registration and sticker to come in, so don't wait until the last minute. Also, they told me that they would call me when my registration was in, but they never did. After two weeks I just went in to check on it, and it was just sitting in their drawer. That was a little annoying. Finally, as far as I know, they only have two locations: one at NAS North Island and one at MCAS Miramar.
