This is my third time taking the train ride to places, but for this trip with Empire Builder. It's one of the furthest trips I have taken with Amtrak, from Chicago to Seattle. The sleeping cart was a little better then what I imagine. There are leg rooms you can move a little. The window is big enough you get the full view. Staff was friendly and attentive, so that is a big plus. Not to mention that the foods that they offer on their menu are delicious. It's all covered if you purchased the package. It was worth it I mean breakfast, lunch, and dinner all included. Yes, you can take shower on the train, but it's actually pretty fun. While taking a shower when the train is moving lol but just don't fall. Definitely it's worth the experience to take the Amtrak overnight if you haven't done it yet. read more

Nice station. Great staff! Lots of photo opportunities even if you aren't taking the Amtrak (which I've ridden hundreds of times). The museum was closed when we got there so we asked one of the ticket agents if they had any items/toys for sale that would be appropriate for young children. He gave us a stack of free stuff that he said they hand out to young passengers all the time. Very much appreciated! We weally enjoyed visiting this depot and got some great pictures! read more

This is one of the better stops on the Empire Builder route. Amtrak still sucks all the way around, but Whitefish is a nice stop.

We like visiting The Train Depot/Whitefish Museum, when we are walking around town. It is so interesting. We met Mr. Duffy today along with his lovely wife, Diane. His family has been renting cars from this Train Depot for more than 60 years. He gave us a very welcomed history lesson! What an awesome treat! read more

Amtrak is a simple way to commute at a reasonable price. This trip was from Whitefish to Minot. The interior of the Whitefish station was clean and most people were standing outside waiting for the train to arrive. The station had a few museum quality photos and stuffed animals from the area. The train isn't terrible but Amtrak should consider more cleanliness in both the restrooms and the cars themselves. They are a little smelly and didn't seem all that clean. The staff on the train is very hit or miss. Some of the car attendants will chat with you and others acted as though the patrons were a inconvenience. The dining car is a joke. $40 will get you a small steak that's microwaved. For $20 you get half a bowl of microwaved pasta. A half bottle of wind is $16. There is a snack car featuring some terrible cold sandwiches and microwave pizzas. It's not worth the money to eat on the train. If you get a sleeper car the meals are provided but even then the quality of the food is very much like the meals you get on a airplane. The seats in the train recline all the way back and it doesn't interfere with the people behind you. This was a positive. Overall the trip cost about $300 for two adults round trip for 12 hours. It really was nice to not have to drive and the flight would have been closer to $2200. read more

Not sure what makes a 5 star Amtrak station. The staff are friendly, visitors are low key and access to the station is easy by Snow Bus. Tip: 1) Dress warm, you may stand outside for a bit boarding or picking up luggage and it gets cold at night. 2) Make sure you arrive 45 minutes early to check luggage. The ticket window will refuse checked bags 20 minutes before train arrival. read more

Train ride not bad don't plan on being on time ever. I would travel again. But is it's more then a day I will do a sleeper!

For your tickets book early for the best prices. Prices can increase by the hour. The roomett is small. The seats fold up to become bunk beds which are comfortable. If your body mass is on the larger size with both bunks down there is no room to dress so you will sit on the bed to don your nighty. With the bunks up adequate room. Staff is great and food good. Many railroad crossings so train whistle. This route is also used for freight trains so many meets and sidings. Highly recommend read more

I loved my Amtrak experience! The staff was friendly and it seemed rather modern, I used my phone for the ticket. The train was spacious, I could put me legs straight out in front of me in coach mind you! It was smooth riding. For long trips it can be uncomfortable sleeping in the seats, but it was amongst the most comfortable public transportation that I have took. I also liked that it was easy to take two checked bags so I didn't need to drag them around plus my carry on. I took the train to relax and enjoy the scenery and want to do it again. I think the train is my preferred method of travel for public ground transportation. read more

The area is clean and very welcoming but the train gets so delayed that it can affect your schedule otherwise it's great way to travel.

Let me start by saying, my service with Amtrak has been so poor that I downloaded yelp just to be able to give it a review. To begin, our train was almost six hours late. In light of this we decided to upgrade to a roomette, but because of it's delay the attendant was unable to even review whether the train had one available. The attendant quoted an upgrade fee of $112, so we call the "1-800" and were also quoted $112. While trying to pay for the upgrade the worker informs us of the mistake in days, because the train was so late it was registered as the next day and would instead cost $390 for the same upgrade on the same train. This is by far the worst business practice I have ever come into contact with. Despite having two quotes for the upgrade, they were unwilling to honor their quote and would rather leave the cabin empty and have two very unhappy customers rather than work to fix the problem. I cannot understand how a business can operate in this manner, as it seems this is very common. Our situation can't be helped, but hopefully someone else will benefit in the future from knowing what to expect from this service. P.S. The attendant at the station was quite friendly and seemed genuinely apologetic for the behavior of the company, this review in no way reflects our interaction with him. read more

I am writing this as an Amtrak passenger with a disability who lives near Whitefish and uses the Whitefish station every now and again for my travel needs. I always have a friend drive me to the station and pick me up to help me get my bags into the station. Once I am at the check in counter, I inform the person at the desk that I will need help getting my luggage to the train. I always make sure that I travel light, this way I can carry my luggage on and it has not been a problem. I will say however as a person with a disability, that it is better to ride coach than in a sleeper car because the sleeper cars are not attended at night and if you need something in the middle of the night, and you are traveling alone, you are out of luck. This happened to me once when my family paid for my minor child and I to ride in a sleeper car from Whitefish to Seattle because we were going straight from the train station to the airport to catch a flight to our final destination. My father wanted us to be well rested for the flight which needless to say we were NOT because of our experience in the sleeper car. Other than the lack of an attendant at night, the sleeper car was comfortable for what it was and my daughter enjoyed rolling around in the top bunk and letting the cage catch her . read more

This is the most ridiculously unorganized and highly unprofessional company. Our train was scheduled to leave at nine pm. We checked the Amtrak website to make sure it was on time, and saw it was delayed until 2 am. This was understandable as the weather conditions are terrible, but we didn't receive any notifications. We called the station, and were told the train might actually be as late as five am; it is now 5:22. They claim that the trains location is unknown. One woman has cried. I have never been more eager to board a 13 hour-long train ride, and will never be riding Amtrak again. Update: we were transferred to a bus once we reached Spokane. We stopped at Burger King in Moses lake because Amtrak graciously treated everyone to fast food to make up for the all of the inconveniences. Thanks, but we decided to pass on the Whopper and fries. 8 hours later (Spokane to Edmonds is normally a six hour drive, but the burger king detour and multiple other stops in between added time) my friend and I made it to the Edmonds station. When we went to receive our bags that we had initially checked in whitefish, they were not there. We were concerned about our luggage and its whereabouts throughout the chaos of this trip, but were told by 3 different amtrak employees to not worry, that our bags would without a doubt get on our bus with us to Edmonds. I have been on the phone with several different amtrak customer service employees, train station employees, and the bus company. Our bags are still missing. read more
