This is a letter I have written to Amtrack Customer Service. I have traveled twice this week on the East Coast, and I have been surprised at how there does not seem to be any respect, service, or appreciation given from the staff that works on the train. The story I reference is an isolated incident that happened between myself and one staff member, but in writing about it, it made me recall that not one interaction or announcement I heard while on the train felt like it was from a place of mutual respect or appreciating that there were paying passengers on the train.
I questioned if this is the new normal for Amtrak, or have we as customers accepted being treated this way?
The Letter:
I want to express how disappointed I am in how the simple idea of courteous service, seems to be completely lost in the world of train travel on Amtrak. I took two 8 hour train rides, and two 3 hour train rides this week, and what I experienced was less that pleasant. It has made me question if this is the new normal, your clients pay money to be treated, and spoken to like we are a bother to you, and we the customer just accept it? (I guess that is the root of the problem, we are allowing it) So I have decided to write to try and see if it will make any difference.
The first thing that was clear to me is how inconsistent things/rules are between different staff shifts, when riding in the quiet car. The first half of my trip from DC - NYC, it was very clear what the rules of the quiet car were, and also how things should not be in the aisles, or in the way of other passengers. Well the second half of that trip when the staff changed, it is like all of those rules went out the window. People were talking all over, there were newspapers on the floor in the main aisle, just waiting to be slipped on. And the conductors that came through the car did not say or do anything about it.
My return from Back Bay in Boston, is the part that sealed the deal for this email. I am on the platform, the train gets into the station, stops, and one of the staff gets off and stands in front of the door. I approach him, with my ticket in my hand, and he is still standing in front of the door. I look around me and notice no one else is getting on the train. So I ask him "Are we allowed to board the train, no one else is getting on" he replies with a smart tone of voice " If you plan to get to your destination you better get on the train, stop worrying about what everyone else is doing, and worry about yourself". There is nothing about this reply that was appreciated, I found his tone of voice, sarcasm, and message all to be completely unnecessary. I asked him a simple question for instructions, mainly because he was standing in front of the door, and his unwillingness to move, is what made me think I should not board the train. This is what made me think to myself, "Why am I allowing him to treat me this way, I am paying money to a company that is allowing their staff to treat their customers like dirt" So I have decided to take a stand, report my findings, and see what the outcome will be. I do hope that this is not the new normal for what customer service is, within the structure of Amtrack. I can't imagine that much of anything I am told in response to my message, will convince me. I will need to see a difference in how the staff speaks, makes announcements, and interacts the next time I ride the train. read more
