I took the 6:50 am train out of Providence and after one delay, we arrived around 8 am (originally scheduled to arrive at 7:24 am). I tried doing some research before hand as to whether this station is built out with a café, or legit waiting area but didn't find much. The train arrived on the opposite side of the parking lot / exit so I walked over to the first building I saw. It's a little castle-like waiting area, fully enclosed with two benches. There are stairs leading down to a tunnel which connects to the other side. This was pretty unique since I am used to seeing overhead bridges to walk from side to side. On the other side of the track there is another building that seemed to be hosting an art gallery but it was closed. Attached to that was another waiting area with two benches, but this one was only partially enclosed so when it's raining, it doesn't offer much protection. It was pretty quiet the whole time I was there. Although they don't have food or comfortable places to sit, the public library is a 7-minute walk away and there are various food shops nearby.

Certainly convenient to have this station, as one of the closest airports is about an hour away. If…read moreit wasn't for the consistent trains that pass through and stop here, you'd think it was abandoned. I've used this station several times over the years and not once have I seen the lobby open/operating (morning, afternoon, or early evening). This year was the first time I actually saw staff cleaning around the station. Be mindful of which side of the tracks you need to be on. Like the station, the signage is showing their age, and the track displays don't always show which train is approaching. Watch your step! Arriving at the station you'll have to get off at a tilt, and most of the time only two doors are opened (at least for the Boston to Westerly route). Train operators are helpful with offering to take your luggage as you step off, so don't risk a twisted ankle trying to do it yourself. There's quite a bit of parking available at the station, and around the town. Train significantly delayed or wanting something to eat/drink as you arrive/depart? There's a mix of restaurants and cafes in the town and within walking distance. With the lobby seemingly closed all the time, don't bank on it for shelter if you're traveling when it's raining. There's a slight overhang by the elevator, but it's an open 'tunnel' so the wind will still come through.

But the Montauk line is the real deal. When I was a kid, my dad owned the IGA in Hampton Bays. We'd have cousins come from Queens and take the train ride in to spend time with us at the beach. As a teenager, it was the best time ever. Thanks LIRR! From Penn Station NYC to the LIRR Montauk line its 116 miles. Think about this, you can fly to a different country *or* take the Long Island Rail Road to the end of Long Island and be in a beautiful beach town??? The train ends in Montauk, the end of the line. There is a MTA ticket machine here, make sure you buy a ticket going back to NYC or you'll pay extra on the train. There are cabs waiting to take you from the station to your hotel. If you're coming to Montauk from NYC, you're coming here for a relaxing vacation. Enjoy!

There are two tracks and two platforms; The station is served by Amtrak, and Hartford Line & CT Rails. This was my first experience on the train w the CT Rails. We had a training to attend that started in Berlin station and went to the New Haven State Street station. Wanted to show us the ropes and it was a very nice experience. It was only like a 20 minute ride and very smooth. Great opportunity to be able to relax and not have drive to save on gas with the gas prices they are now. It was $6.75 for a one way and $12 round trip. Also there is the shore direction as well if you want to head down the New London way. I learned a lot and now I feel more comfortable jumping on the CTRails now.

There are two tracks and two platforms; the parking lot was big and can fit approximately 200 vehicles. I saw two electric vehicle charging stations. The station is served by Amtrak, Hartford Line, and Valley Flyer. This new station opened around 2018. It's a beautiful building with an elevator and stairs to a pedestrian bridge. I liked that they had signs regarding the history of the station. It's handicap accessible. There were many benches and even a little free library. There were ticket machines, television screens showing the train schedule, and periodic announcements. Overall, it's nice train station and it was very quiet on the Saturday afternoon we were there.

4 out of 5 stars…read more I've had consistently positive experiences at Providence Train Station. The staff are always courteous, friendly, and willing to help. No question ever feels like a bad question when you speak with them, and that level of customer service is exactly what travelers need--whether traveling for work or pleasure. The bathrooms are definitely outdated, but they are clean and, importantly, do not smell. That may sound like a small thing, but there are plenty of businesses with much newer restrooms that cannot say the same. But they should have the option of paper towels to dry your hands, in my opinion of course, besides just hand blowers. Also one big note for the men's bathroom!! There are 2 urinals and there is no divider between them. So if you're shy or worried there may be prying eyes, then use the stalls. I've never personally eaten at the deli, but it always seems to have a steady flow of customers, so that's probably a good sign. The convenience store inside is also very useful. Prices are what you would expect at a transportation hub, although I've found them to be slightly less expensive than at some other travel locations. The station interior is currently undergoing renovations, and it appears that some exterior work is planned as well, including improvements to the sidewalk in front of the station. Hopefully, the upgrades will make an already convenient station even better. One of the best things about this station is the location. It's right downtown and very easy to access. Providence Place Mall is only a short walk away, and the park directly outside the station is a great feature that makes the surrounding area feel much more inviting. My only real caveat is access to Tracks 1 and 2. You have to go downstairs to reach them. I have not personally noticed an elevator nearby, although I would expect there is an accessible option somewhere in the station. There are escalators, but the ones I've used only travel upward rather than down toward the tracks. Overall, Providence Train Station is convenient, clean, well located, and supported by a very helpful staff. With the renovations underway, I think it has the potential to become an even better station.

The elevators are not in operation right now, so be ready to haul your bags up and down the stairs ... or... wait for the slow elevator to come up. The remodel has moved many things inside for the time being. They still have large screens for train information. It's an easy station to use since there's only two tracks.
