2023 December 13 Back of Business Class seat

Love Amtrak! Do I love the bad internet, train delays, and prices? Nope, I love that there's an easy way to get to LAX. I ride Amtrak (Pacific Coast Surfliner) when flying out of LAX. Combine that with the Flyaway bus and it's an amazing combo. It beats having to drive and sit in traffic. Tip: Buy Business Class always. With Business class you get a snack box and choice of water or wine. Tough choice . But the real reason I buy Business class is because I'm guaranteed a seat. When you buy coach, if the train is full you have your stand. Amtrak oversells coach but not business class. Seats are comfortable, way more legroom than a coach ticket on a plane. The tray tables are big enough to hold a laptop. Bathrooms are decent. You also get red cap service and lounge access with a Business Class ticket. Staff is hot and miss. It's a government job.,. Remember to sign up for Amtrak's loyalty program. You can use points for free rides.

I've been taking the Surfliner for close to 20 years, and have used almost every stop from Oceanside to DTLA. I've watched this particular rail system deteriorate in service and timeliness. While the app makes buying tickets and modifying chosen trips a breeze, and the office people are so kind when one asks for info on which track is being used, they no longer check tickets after you board and are comfy in your seat. They now force everyone to stand in line to have their tickets scanned. Besides that wait; this train slows down/stops more periodically between and at stations to let oncoming trains pass than in the past. My train was delayed a bit one way and over 30 minutes going home, which wouldn't have been bad except Oceanside doesn't allow overnight parking past 2 am without a pre-requested pass and I was on the last train. I was hoping for a better overall experience so I chose Business Class seats. I got a snack box and water only on the return trip (which I gave to a homeless person- I hope Amtrak doesn't stop because they find their trash all over haha). On the trip up, the guy was sleeping so I never did get my treats. It was a bit annoying trying to get to my seat as I entered the train from where the conductor was checking tickets and had to walk over. Paths and stairwells are very narrow. Overall, I will continue to use the Surfliner for my northbound excursions, or even the Metro link depending on who has the better timetable that day. Pros: - nice views - can go from SD to SLO - the app Cons: - pricey now - too many delays - can't park for several nights or even overnight - low quality snacks served in Business Class

DO NOT buy tickets for the "amtrak," considering the amtrak is NOT EVEN RUNNING ANYMORE. This is a SCAM!!!!!!! The amtrak is no longer running because of a coastal landslide. The amtrak web site will now sell you BUS tickets. You have to take a bus from Oceanside to Irvine, then another one from Irvine to LA, THEN ANOTHER inside LA to the airport, if you need to go there. The web site is UNCLEAR about this, and many people still think they are taking a train when they are NOT. Also, the bus tickets SELL OUT so BUY THE TICKETS ONLINE, EARLY. Do not show up the day of your trip expecting to get tickets. There is a male employee here who is also rude to guests. Most of the other employees are nice and helpful though! Thank goodness for them.

Took a ride on the Pacific Surfliner and honestly...why don't I do this more often?!…read more I booked business class (which, on a busy train, felt absolutely necessary) and I'm so glad I did because I didn't know what to expect. The complimentary sodas and simple snacks weren't anything fancy, but definitely a nice little bonus on a longer ride. We traveled up the coast and while the seats going up weren't quite as nice as the ones on the way back, the overall experience was still so good. Way more relaxing than flying--comfortable seats, no airport chaos, and actual room to breathe. My little one was completely obsessed with the window views--watching the waves roll in and the beaches pass by was such a highlight. I even got some quality quiet time and managed to read a book, which never happens. Overall, such a fun, easy, and scenic experience. Highly recommend for a day trip if you want something convenient but still feels like a little adventure.

We decided on the afternoon train and got to see the sunset along the Pacific coast. Definitely a very worthwhile experience. Overall, the train ride was definitely worth it. The experience at the train station was a little less than ideal (little bit undermanned, which often feels to be the case in the U.S. compared to some other places - higher labor costs of course). The train ride like all train rides is much slower than many parts of the world - no high speed rail (since it wouldn't make sense for the U.S. - low population density and wide spaces - kind like why there's no A380s being flown any more), but if you're riding the train for the experience, that's definitely not a problem (if you're into speed - flying or even driving would probably be faster). In terms of seats - the seats on the trains here are much wider, much more comfortable, and the trains as a whole are pretty empty most of the time compared to elsewhere in the world. The view from the train along the coast was very nice. Several parts of the trip you're right by the beach and the ocean. And of course the sunset was fantastic. Highly recommend if you have the time.

I had anxiety riding the Amtrak because I had never taken it before, but an experienced young student from UCSD gave me the 411 about the train and he helped this old man navigate my first train trip. I started at the Solana Beach train station and took a scenic, relaxing, no stress, and non-traffic congestion ride to Union Station Los Angeles. After my first trip, I'm sold on taking train rides to Los Angeles. The Solana Beach train station is obviously located in Solana Beach just a short walk from the beach, it's across from a plaza where you can grab a bite from Chief's Burgers & Brew, and a stroll to Pizza Port on the west side of the tracks. The main reason I chose the Solana Beach station was that you can park your car in their free public parking lot over the weekend. There is plenty of parking at this station. There are two tracks here at this station. Track 1 is southbound and Track 2 is northbound. If you're traveling to Los Angeles, take the elevator down to the waiting area for Track 2. There aren't that many concrete benches to sit on, so expect to stand while you're waiting for the train. I purchased my Amtrak ticket from the Amtrak website where you can choose to ride Coach for $31 one way to Union Station or Business Class for $46. I highly recommend taking Business Class because for $15 extra, you'll have a higher chance to have a seat, the seats are more comfortable, you have more space, and you get free snacks and drinks. When I got to my business class seats, I noticed that there were many riders who had a snack box. When I went to grab some snacks and drinks, they had run out of the snack box. All they had left at the time were Goldfish crackers, sodas, and water. One of the train staff was able to find extra snack boxes and I was able to grab one. The snack boxes come with pretzels, beef jerky, fruits and nuts, a mini fig bar, and cheese spread. A good snack to hold you down until your last stop. During my trip, I saw beautiful sights, really cool stops, Angel stadium, and I didn't have to worry about navigating through LA traffic. It only took a little over 2 hours to go from Solana Beach to Union Station. I really enjoyed my first Amtrak trip, the comfort of it, the beauty, the free snacks, and the stress-free experience.

The Santa Fe Depot was built by the bygone railroad of that name. I'm old enough to remember the advertising slogan "Ship and travel Santa Fe--all the way!" This is one of relatively few major railway stations that have both been preserved largely in their original form, and continue to serve rail passengers. It is a beautiful Mission-style building from the early 20th Century, and will give you a feel for what rail travel was like in its heyday. Gorgeous tile work and some nice landscaping make this a great place to wait for a train. (Search "Santa Fe Depot (San Diego)" on Wikipedia for more on its history and architecture.) For Amtrak passengers, this is a staffed station with ticketing and checked baggage services. Amtrak staff are courteous and helpful. The waiting room is large and has plenty of old-style bench seating. There is a designated waiting area for seniors and people with disabilities needing assistance in boarding. There are restrooms, but Amtrak often has difficulty in keeping unhoused people from making a mess or using the facilities for things other than immediate relief. So at times, not everyone will find them comfortable to use. In addition to the Trolley, the Santa Fe Depot is also served by several MTS bus lines. There is a paid parking lot run by a third-party provider. No free parking nearby. There is a small kiosk--the Silver Streak Cafe--selling food and drink. See my separate review.
