Coaster ride is the best and when you have the views of the city and the Ocean on the trip to the San Diego Fair.
    Joel C.

My part Two to the Solana Beach San Diego Fair review and the walk through of the station that I had and the services that are there in Solana Beach Station. With the Coaster train that I had taken to Solana Beach I wanted to get a general picture of the station with the past fairs you know when things change, and some remain the same its wen you go up and see for yourself with the time frame and with the many services that will be going to the Solana Beach Station. With the San Diego Fair one of the largest and the most widely used events with many outside states that bring their food trucks to and the return of the Infomercials. As a customer and traveler, you will want to know the train schedules and the prices of the tickets that will get you into the San Diego County fair with the North County Transit they are running specials that you can purchase online and at the ticket machines and the station terminals. You can either drive to the Solana Beach station and you can brave the long line of traffic that will be going up the Coast Highway and when you arrive at the Del Mar Race Track that parking is going to be very expensive. At the Solana Beach station when you arrive on the Coaster Traveling from the Santa Fe Station you will be arriving at the below platform when you come up on the elevator that will take you upstairs to the shuttle busses that will take you to the San Diego Fair with the shuttle busses that will stop at the back side of the park. When you arrive at the Solana Beach Station there are several restaurants that are nearby you will have to take the elevator up from the platform. At the Solana Beach station its very clean and the parking is very good with the large number of parking spaces with the 101 Bus that does stop on the street out front of the station. Time to get ready for the fun time and the great food that you will find at the fair with the many rides, and the great time you will have the kids will love. Traveling by the Coaster or driving up to the San Diego Fair you can cut down the time with the travel time to Solana Beach of 40min by the use of the Coaster. As a Yelp Elite Reviewer with the use of the Coaster train and the sprinter train you can travel too the many areas of the North County and for those that are traveling from San Diego Santa Fe Station. With the weeks of the summer months, you have some of the best times to enjoy with the great times before college. Have a great time at the San Diego Fair with the best travel on the coaster you can sit back and enjoy the ride to Solana Beach have a great time.

When taking Amtrak to LA, I prefer this station over downtown -- cuts off a bunch of time. Definitely a fan.

Perfect place for a zombie apocalypse trap. You walk down or up a steep walkway, the elevator is one of the slowest on the planet. If you kickazz @ skateboarding, they have a nice steep downward ramp that Z's. Clock signs will tell ya when the train arrives. You might spot a few weirdos, be sure to get there a bit b4 train to avoid them.

This is definitely the prettiest outdoor train station I've been to all year!! It's so much easier than getting on and off in downtown SD or anywhere else I've been this year!! The north train is downstairs so give yourself enough time to find the train!!

The parking lot is huge here. It would be better if they fixed the pavement because it is so run down and warn out. Its a good spot to leave your car because Ive seen a few patrol officers around. I wouldnt parking too far away.

I prefer this station over the other local ones because it's so easy to get to. Pay attention on signage. Read signs careful so that you end up on the right side of the track. If going North (towards Irvine) go across the bridge. Parking is kind of easy but if there is no room on the lot go out and park on dirt facing th lot. Free WiFi on train and business class is up front- FYI ;)

This is one of the cleaner train stations in San Diego. And it is across the street from the best coffee in California. . . Lofty coffee! Alternatives are Claire's on Cedros if you want good coffee and filling brunch dishes. There is an inside seating area on the rare occasion you get cold or it rains in San Diego.

Easy schedules on mobile interface if you know your destinations

Number one tip: these trains leave exactly on the dot!! If you are running late, expect to buy a new ticket if the office is closed. Good thing most of these run on the hour and there is plenty of good food close by. The parking lot appears safe and well lit. There is a "long term" parking area on the right although I don't know if they enforce which cars get to park where, as I didn't see a parking attendant. TRACK 1: southbound TRACK 2: northbound *** & probably the one most folks from San Diego are going to hop onto (unless they want to take a train 1 or 2 stops to go downtown..) The elevator going to track 2 doesn't make sounds so you may think it's broken (like I did) but the doors will open. :) Also there is a little Amtrak machine closer to the office that has more options than the 2 machines immediately facing the parking lot. I couldn't find the "Irvine" station in the first two machines and luckily found the third machine closer to the office area. From Solana to Irvine one way it cost $20. Not sure how much more it costs to go up to NorCal stations.

Taken on the track 2 side waiting for the northbound Pacific Surfliner. Looking south.

If you're heading north to L.A. Union Station on the Pacific Surfliner you'll be on track 2, so you'll need to take the bridge from the parking lot over the tracks and then go downstairs. As you're facing the track the train pulls up from your right and the Business class car will be on the tail end. Line up by G and H. The train flips around at Union Station, so keep that in mind if you're going past LA. Especially if you get sick going backward. Prepare yourself to change seats. Hope that helps! Happy travels!

Wow! Such a selection of uniqueness! Love that the plants are living out in natural elements not a green house. The owner Jeff was friendly, knowledgeable and he has really decent prices. Los Angeles the prices are two - three times the price! I bought some customs ceramic pottery I just couldn't resist. I have never seen any pottery like this anywhere! Next time I am down this way I will come by again to see what I can't live without!!! I highly recommend coming here!

I love this station and it is so clean, safe and user-friendly. Just off Interstate 5 and architecturally designed to mimic the old Quonset huts used in the area in the old days. I love the nice, tall, healthy Torrey Pines trees that surround the station. They are lovely and obviously well-tended. Short term and a long term parking lot with handicapped parking is right up front. I will say I was surprised that there was no entrance ramp for wheelchair patrons who would need to ascend a few stairs to get into the station from the front door. That's why I took off 1 YELP STAR. Keep in mind this is a small station and the trains stop and take off again quickly. I would urge passengers here to not cut it short and get to the station in time and make your way down, in a timely manner, to the platform and sit on the benches to await your Amtrak coach. There is a big sign advising potential suicide people to call a toll-free suicide hotline number right above where the trains run.

The Santa Fe Depot was built by the bygone railroad of that name. I'm old enough to remember the advertising slogan "Ship and travel Santa Fe--all the way!" This is one of relatively few major railway stations that have both been preserved largely in their original form, and continue to serve rail passengers. It is a beautiful Mission-style building from the early 20th Century, and will give you a feel for what rail travel was like in its heyday. Gorgeous tile work and some nice landscaping make this a great place to wait for a train. (Search "Santa Fe Depot (San Diego)" on Wikipedia for more on its history and architecture.) For Amtrak passengers, this is a staffed station with ticketing and checked baggage services. Amtrak staff are courteous and helpful. The waiting room is large and has plenty of old-style bench seating. There is a designated waiting area for seniors and people with disabilities needing assistance in boarding. There are restrooms, but Amtrak often has difficulty in keeping unhoused people from making a mess or using the facilities for things other than immediate relief. So at times, not everyone will find them comfortable to use. In addition to the Trolley, the Santa Fe Depot is also served by several MTS bus lines. There is a paid parking lot run by a third-party provider. No free parking nearby. There is a small kiosk--the Silver Streak Cafe--selling food and drink. See my separate review.

Came here a couple of months ago to take the Pacific Surfliner along the coast to Santa Barbara. Station itself like pretty much most similar situations in the U.S. seemed organized, well-runned, and understaffed (as compared to some other places in the world). We tried to get some confirmation on some things around luggage and our pre-purchased ticket from the booth, but there was nobody there to answer our questions (think the guy was working on something else around the platform). A bit of line began to form waiting for someone to show up. So we called the Amtrak number to try to get things sorted out and after waiting for awhile the operator and answered and the conclusion of the discussion was something to the effect of: "we can't really help you in an efficient way here over the phone, but there should be someone at the booth soon given how much time remains." And then kind of what often happens, happened: guy showed up, answered my questions, took care of my problems, took care of everybody on the line, got everything done within like 8-10 minutes, all with about 10 minutes left before the train arrives. Pretty efficient to say the least. The train ride itself was quite good, and I wrote about it elsewhere. Quite amazing and highly recommend. Also very different from what I'm used to in East Asia on several levels.

I purchased a $30 ticket to Los Angeles for an important business meeting. I arrived with my Segway -- a small, compact mobility device I've traveled with over 100 times without issue. Suddenly, I was told it was "prohibited" and I would not be allowed to board the train. No clear explanation. No attempt to problem-solve. Just flat-out refusal. The way it was handled was even worse. The staff raised their voices, treated me like I was doing something criminal, and even threatened to call the police for "trespassing." Trespassing? With a valid paid ticket? Completely unprofessional and humiliating. Meanwhile, I've personally seen electric bikes, scooters, and other devices allowed without issue. So what exactly is the policy? It felt inconsistent at best and borderline discriminatory at worst. Because of this, I missed an important meeting in Los Angeles and it cost me serious money. There was zero empathy, zero customer service, and zero accountability. This was not just inconvenience -- it was a complete failure of professionalism. I will be contacting corporate directly and requesting a formal explanation of their policy and how their staff handled this situation. Extremely disappointed. I will be reconsidering using Amtrak in the future. They have to address this major concern immediately a total disgrace. Amen

I thought the chill vibes and ocean views would set the tone for a nice weekend. I was mistaken. There are some decent ocean views but it's a very small portion of the ride. I did business class and ended up in seat that didn't recline or have a foot rest. That combined with a small package of Oreos and potato chips, to me didn't justify the price increase to business. I did research online ahead of time and was lead to believe there would be full reclining chairs fun snack packs and even a glass of wine or beer - none of that was true on the train we got. So keep that in mind if you see fun take the train videos. My fault I should know better than to believe what I see online. Also, its good to know that there less business cars then coach by half so finding a seat with a good view in business is difficult. None of that is a deal breaker or that big of a deal mostly just interesting information to temper expectations. However, the behavior of the ticket taker really sunk this trip. We were at a 4 top for 2 of us and he said that would be fine unless a larger group boarded. We agreed and would've gladly offered up our seats especially if a family with children boarded. we were on it for 6 hrs so figured if we had to move around a bit it'd be no big deal but we'd stay put as long as we could. A group of 3 did get on a few stops later all very grown adults one sat across from us and we made space even giving him the charger. They were only on for one stop and didn't need the group seating. Next to us was another 4 top that had only 1 guy at that the ticket taker never spoke to or warned he may have to move. When he came up and noticed that they were a group of 3 he said we have to move for them. No problem, I started to say we're fine to move he cut me off at we're fine and said no you're not fine you need to move, they're a group and of course they won't ask for your seats but you have to move they shouldn't have to even ask. I tried again to help the situation and explain that I meant we would move but he cut me off again and proceeded to raise his voice to us and not allow me to speak. The group, that we already spoken to said no no it's ok we don't need it, which made him even more angry. He finally left and I offered to the other riders to just switch seats if they wanted to face each other and told them we're more than happy to exchange seats. Right after that the single guy next to us left and they took those seats and were totally fine until they got off shortly after. In retrospect I wish I would've stood up for myself better stating that I was trying to say I'd be happy to move and even explaining that we had already spoken to them. I didn't expect to have to defend myself this way while paying extra (too much) for public transportation. That interaction, which I've read isn't uncommon among Amtrak employees, with the general state of the train means I will not be a repeat customer and will not recommend this ride to anyone. I'm super bummed as I was very looking forward to this and hoped to love it.

It seems pretty clean and people mostly keep to themselves in my experience. There was a security guard riding with us but it wasn't clear if he was with the MTS or making his way somewhere. It's a relatively quick and easy ride and transferring isn't hard if you need to. I went to the gas lamp no problem. Coming back later it was a bit dark, especially at old town where I transferred. I just stood nearer to the light. It didn't take all that long and I was back to Nobel. Security was making sure fares were payed as I tapped my phone app out upon leaving. Easy and you don't have to deal with parking, $$$ gas costs or traffic.
